The dancers undoabt- ; edly enjoyed the dance, while the profession als go through it as part of a laborious duty, 1 and we don’t know that any of the latter were able i -i throw their heels as high as the gri settes of the Latin Quarter. Tho best of or der was preserved, and daring the prome nades Lhere was but little to distinguish the company from an ordinary assemblage of well-dressed people. There was a great many respectable French people present as spectators, and an abun dance c; English and American gentlemen, but no ladies of either of these ADglo-Saxon nationalities. At the Mabille Garden, how ever, the English and American ladies out numbered the gentlemen, as this is one of the places in Paris which the ladies all persist in seeing “just once.” Among the latter we recognized the beautiful daughters of a Northern Bishop, and any number of “fathers and mothers in Israel,” with their daughters. There is no use iu any one com ing to Europe without seeing the people iu ail their modes and phases ol life, and to see Paris without visiting the Mabille, would be like going to Rome and not visiting St. Peter’s. “It is naughty, but it is nice,’’ and the stranger, finding himself a stranger in a Mcrpii :v.
