A Dash for Liberty. THE DEVOTION OF A WtFBr-ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE ESCAPES ON RECORD. The Memphis Avalanche gives in full the escape from the jail in that city of White, a noted horse thief, which has already been briefly mentioned by telegraph. In the after noon on Monday, White’s wife came to the jail to see him. A little basket which Mrs. White had on her arm was searched, and found to contain nothing except the material of a good dinner for her husband. The door of the reception-room was open, and the two were observed talking together by several of the officers of the jail. An hour or so after ward, a negro man stated that he saw Mrs. While lift the skirt of her dress and take some thing—the nature of which he could not tell— and hand it to White, who put it in his bosom. The negro said nothing at the time, however, 1 and the officers knew nothing of it until after- j ward. Alter talking for a half hour the two s came out in the centre of the vestibule, where ! Whito affectionately kissed his wife, who : turned and walked to the outer gate, while White stood in the centre of the vestibule, a j distance of twenty-five feet from the gate, watching her. Guard Thomas Murray un locked the gate, and swung it open wide so as to allow the lady to pass through. Just as she reached the centre of the gate, and while i standing in such a way that it could not be closed, she asked Mr. Murray, “ What ! time is it ?” The gentleman very politely j started to pull out his watch to sec, ' when throwing up both hands high ! over her head, she cried, “Ban, Cap- ! tain White, run for your life.’* With the cry j White made a jump toward the gate, drawing I a glittering navy-six from his bosom, and i just in three jumps was along side of Mr. I Murray. Mrs. White was still standing in i ENOCH MORGANS SONS S A P O L I O is a substitute for Soap for all Household pur poses. except washing clothes.
