It is now fifteen years since an enterprising Frenchman, one M. de Tou- nens, formerly practising at the bar, con ceived the idea of paying a visit to Araucania. Being a man of considerable energy, no time was lost in putting the idea into execution, and before many days had elapsed he found himself at the end of his journey and in the land he wished to be. He quickly saw that the country possessed every requisite for becoming a prosperous and wealthy Slate, but unfortunately just at that time a funous war was ragiDg amongst rival chiefs, each trying to make himself supreme for the time being. M. de Tounens, having decided upon making Araucania his adopted country, exerted him self in bringing about a reconciliation between the contending parties, lor which his previous profession as a barrister eminently qualified ; him. The task he had set himself was not ! so ea-ily accomplished as he had at first im- agintd.
