While we were looking in astonishment up on the performance of whitring the smoke, the charge was exhausted, and without losing any time he immediately set about preparing for another brief period of bliss. To the uninitiated the smoking materials are a curiosity, and look very little as though they were intended for lhc purpose for which they are used. This is hollow, but gives no such evidence outwardly, as the top is covered. Close examination will reveal a hole in the centre, as though the covering had been punctured by a darning needle. So much for the pipe. To smoke opium a blaze is needed, and the smoker prepares a small lamp with which to heat the dark mass. There is also a stiff wire, for what purpose will shortly appear.
