nicutt street, and running north on Plum street 150
feet, and running back east 100 feet to the Edwin Payne

Dispatches from Commodore uommerell, at
Cape Castle, dated August 15, have been re
ceived at the Admiralty office in London. On
the morning of August 14, Commodore Com-
inerell, with Captain Helden and Commander
Luxmors and five boats manned and armed,
started for Chamah to hold a palaver with
the King and chiefs of the Chamah people.
The object sought was to obtain the assistance
of thia tribe against the Ashantees. The in
terview was very unsatisfactory,however, as'the
Chamah chiefs said they would act neither for
nor against the British Government, and re
fused to send chiefs to accompany the expe
dition into the river Prab. The demeanor of
the Chamah mer, notwithstanding, was so
peaceful that Commodore Commerell appre- r ^

THE COMMODORE S REPORT.
The Commodore says; “ The river is about
seventy or eighty yards broad, and we were
proceeding satisfactorily until about a mile
and a half up the river, when, without any
warning or without seeing any natives, we
were fired upon from the dense bush on the
Chamah side, and found that we had passed
an ambuscade of the natives, who were pour
ing a heavy and murderous fire into oar
boats.
