It is fi remarkable fact that the medical faculty of Memphis are by no means a unit r.s to the'nature ot tho disease now prevailing iu ; the city. That ii is yellow fever is asserted bvsome, but that it is nothing more than a • virulent type of the common malarial levtrof 1 the Mississippi bottoms is tho opinion ot i more than one oi the best physicians wo Lave. The fact that it is contagious, or com municated by contact with tho infected persons, prove nothing, since science has most fully demonstrated that nearly every form of disease is more or less of a contagious nature. If not yellow fever, then, aud if a malignant type of malarial fe ver, why should it be present here in Mein- | phis at this time? Tho lcadiog physicians of j New Orleans announced within the last two ! or three days that there was not a single case j of yellow lever iu the Crescent City, the hith- i erto supposed hot-bed c>f that feur-inspiring malady, and that tho city was ns healthy as it lias ever been at this season of the year. Wo hear of no yellow lever iu Galveston, of none in Charleston, South Carolina, of none even in Havana, one of the original introducers of the pestilence in the American continent. A gentleman li\ing in the vicinity, .nd a friend of the murdered man, called at the Times office on Tuesday, from whom we gathered tbe following particulars: In the afternoon of Sunday, tho 7th of Sep tember, Mr. Wood, ia company with his wife, went to pick some plums at a point not far from their residence. Mulberry grove is com- pysed of scattered clumps of black-jacks s.nd plum thickets, with narrow vistas of prkirle running between. It was here, under a plum tree, the wife left her husband and re turned home, he (this her tale) saying be would go over to a distant field to see about liis cattle, he being a cattle-grower on a large -cale. The wife went home, (still her story>, lid the chores and went to bed. The morn ing dawned, but still the husband was ab- outside ot Memphis, touching the fatality of that disease in this city, New’ Orleans aud tho cities of the Mexican Gulf - the natural con tinental gates of ingress of this tropical pes tilence-should be lree from tho presence of the destroyer? It is accepted, too. we believe, among the medical profession, as a therorem- ic truth, or postulate, that the negro is not liable to bo attacked by yellow lever—his tropical blood being, it is as-umed, fortified against a m ilady indigenous to the tiopics. The prevailing fever has not respected this light ot the colored man, which the fifteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United States fails to cover or protect, and our daily mortuary report shows that black men die of the disease as well as white. A subject of as much importance as this dreadtnl pestilential visitation naturally awakened inquiry, aud inquiry has dis cover! d a condition of things so appalling as I to excite the wonder that tho death-dealing breath of pestilence has not before this dtci- mated our population. Wc have no system ! ol sewerage in Memphis, and the necessary | consequence is that the filth of the city is leit j to take care of itself. Our sanitaiy police ! baric4 ! consist, lor the most part, of some half 1 dozc-n of the chain-gang, who occasionally j do little more than emancipate the contincd odors of the kennels of Main street, and give wings to imprisoned effluvia. Our alleys and obscure streets are left to the rag-pickers, to porcine and canine scavengers, to cleanse them of their superflous foulness; and were it not for tho rains of pitying heaven, would of their selves give abundant employment to our undertakers and grave-diggers.
