moned to appear, has declared him guilty and passed
the sentence of death in contumacy.

The Journal dc Paris declares that ite recont elec
tions demonstrate the necessity for the restoration of
the monarchy to prevent impending anarchy.
The trial of Marshal Bizaine was resumed at noon
to-day. The attendance was larger than on any day
since the opening. The President of the court began
his examination of the accused by stating he should
consider the prisoner’s responsibility commenced
with the 12th day of August. He, however, put sev
eral questions in regard to events before that date, in
reply to questions concerning the disaster of Foibach.
Bazuine said he had no knowledge that orders were
given to tbc Generals direct. He was present at the
council of war hell by the Emperor on the 9 h of Au
gust, and it was then resolved that bis armies should
be brought to the walls of Metz, and a movement in
that direction began on the lith. After reaching the

Thomas Soolt has succeeded in the negotiation of forty-
four Bullion dollars of the first mortgage bonds of the
Fez** and Pacific Railroad. The financial arrange
ments by which this result was reached were perfected
during the height of tbe late panic.

ished, roofs blown off, trees torn from their roots
and carried a grt at distance. There was considerable

dered. He was not aware that the Emperor intended
to depart from Metz.
He declared that tbe Emperor left no special orders.
It was well understood, however, that in the event of
a atrong resistance tbe army was to remain at Metz a
few days, and not go beyond Verdun in any case.
After the battle on the lC.k, Lebouf and Canrobert
agreed with him that it was impossible to advance.
Responsible officers informed him that bis supplies
were insufficient. He said that he g&ve Canrobert all
tbe aid he asked for. At St. Tervate he blamed Lad-
mirraclt for not calling up tbe reserves. In justifica
tion of his conduct after the 13th of Argost, lie cited
orders be had received to be cautions. The accused
j betrayed much excite ment at the beginning of his ex-
