The week of bitd weather which usually accompanies the equinoctial storm has passed since I last wrote, and we are now in the fall enjoyment of beautiful autumn days, which give as a foretaste of St. Martin's Summer. Happy the man who can take to the field with dog and gun on a morning like this, and spend a few hours among the partridges or with the timid roebuck of the woods. The air is inTigorating enough to invite a long chase after the stag or to attempt one into the wild boar's'secret lair. In the city the air is no less fresh and inviting, and in default of other sport the Parisians are crowding the boule vards, and enjoying to the ntmoet this beauti ful autumn weather. It is especially upon such days as this that a sense of longing, of real homesickness, comes over me, and rich autumnal landscapes and forests in red and green and gold are constantly in my mind. Nothing approaching an American autumn can be tonnd in Europe and when one has to something more tangible in the field of lit- *W»T A singularly Interesting and fasci nating book has just appeared herein the “Ifemoir* of Papl fte Kock." In this work we have brought before ns, not only the brave and honest figures of a generation long passed away, bnt it revives a literary period which is of great interest now, because it has forever disappeared. Paul De Kock began to write in an age of pastoral simplicity, in com parison with that in which we live—an age in which opera-bonffe was known, where genu ine grisettes were eeen, and when Jenny, the working-girl, was content in her garret, sitting before her t wo pots of Sowers, and when the present lnxorions demi-monde was entirely unknown. In these days Chateau briand just returned from his mission to Rome, in the plenitade*of his literary gran deur conld lake Mme. Saman to dine at the Cadran Bleu, make her Bing drinking songs, join himself in the refrain, and amuse him self most royally with no scandal and at little cost. Yet how far we seem to be from those days now ! The corruption was probably as great, but it was more naif and far less known even to itself. Gayety was easier then, and laughter freer and more frank, be cause the mind was more insouciant. Passing through the Place Vendome, I paused to look at the first stone which has just been placed in position upon the base of the column, and saw stand ing near the entrance a man whose features appeared familiar to me. I learned later that this was the famous sentinel-killer Sergeant Hoff, whose portrait was so often given dur ing the siege, and who has jast been appoint ed the special guardian of the column. Tne work upon the column is being pushed for ward rapidly, and in a month or two the bronze plates will be restored. V I have some hesitation about beginning upon the political situation, for there is noth ing particularly new, and nothing at all which c .n be considered as definite. If I give my views it can be nothing more ihan my per sonal opinion, and I cannot express that with the confidence ot my confreres, who have spent but a few days in France. In order to speak in very positive terms about French politics, one should be very young, or else ignorant of the French language, and a mere traveler through the country. A literary lady who spent three or four weeks here last year, and at least ten days this year, and who, there fore, knows all almt it, declares that there will j be another revolution if the Monarchists vote I the Comte de Cbambord upon tbe throne, and that he will never be allowed to pnt the crown npon bis bead. Revolutions come at unexpected moments here, and it may be that this eminent lady author is right, bat my ex perience has been that they rarely come when expected. If I remember rightly, the sam6 writer declared that a revolution would fol low the overthrow of 1L Thiers. Bnt the first s’ep is to have the Comte de Cbambord voted npon tbe throne by a Parliamentary majority, and while that is just barely possi ble at this moment. At the outside, the ma jority would be abont thirty, and fifteen is the figure generally counted npon. I do not think that the present Ministry would risk its fortunes npon so small a vote, and unless the Government supports the proposition for declaring the monarchy it will snrely fail. Meantime the Bonapartists and Republicans have come npon a common ground, and are practically allies. The Comte de Cbambord has. according to the state ments of his friends, agreed to discuss the constitutional qneetion with the representa tives of the nation, bnt be will not give up the flag. When told that he could not come back to France with the white flag, he replied, “Je le sail"—“I know that”— which seemed so strange an answer that the Paris correspondent of the London Times thought it a mistake for ,/e ne sais pas cela— I do not know that, and so telegraphed; bnt the error had to be corrected. The organs of the party are now talking with confidence, in order to give tbe public an idea that the thing is certain. The Union says that no patriotic man would wish to hamper the King with pledges, when once npon tbe throne be has prom;* d to discuss matters with the repre- . _ > sentati'es of the people; tbe Universe says ! "jn^esu-tf that those who object to the white flag are all ! “fareems; and L’Assemblee Nationale de clares that since the Republicans and Bona- 1 rartists want a prerogation offMarshal McMa- j hob’s powers, the Chamber most vote tbe i Monarchy, or it will lose all prestige, and j even its own life and honor.
