Yesterday we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gt o. Dallas, the bandsomest.inan in LaGraDge and the most fascinating ladies’ man in the State. He is socially one of the most agreeable gentlemen it has ever been our good fortune to meet—in fact, nothing of a com plimentary natnre could be said that would do him more than justice. It is rumored that he is here on matrimonial LusineFS. We hope to congratulate one of Atlanta’s fair daughters and • at some wedding cake com. Resplendent in Gas. D.fficult as it Is to one conversant with tcenes of magic splendor, it is still more difficult to one unused to scenes of beauty to portray correctly a combination of scenic and artistic talent. To those who lave not viewed the DtGive Opera Hcuse since its recent en largement, we wou’d isy that there are but few at tractions in the Sonth that merit more attention than this. To these who were permitted to attend the opening last night a rare treat was effrred. i hr audikncx hall has been greatly enlarged, with every arrangement for the comfort and convenience of the pleasure-lov ing public. The scats in the parquette and aress cir cle are nicely cushioned, which will oonduce largely to the general comfort, while the peculiarity of their position enable all to see to an advantage. The Hall ia well lighted with gas, and shows to a great advant age the btautifnl and appropriate frescoing that adorn the ceiling. The octagonal curtain design, with its delicate »■ hading snd embellishments, gives a dome-like appearance to the centre, and reflects great credit upon the Kreugi r Bros., who designed and perlormed the work. The most attractive feature, and by far the moat noticeable feature, is the DROP CURTAIN. “The quick eyed painter's Land, now bold, new sof-.ly tender. From his free pencil tfatb iked a magic splendor.” Painted by Eugene Crsmer, the accomplished scenic artist, snd* designed after, Jacob’s celebrated picture in the Art Gallery of England, “The Golden Horn,” in the harbor cf Constantinople. The effect cf the picture is striking, with ita rich Turkish ececery; rebels riding at anchor in the harbor, the morques and minarets of the city gleaming in the evening twilight, while the mellowing rays of the setting sun sbed a bslo of beauty over the oriental scene. One can imsgiie that lie almost bears the ripple of the water as it b; eaka around the craft that ride on ita Lorcm. The settirg sun, struggling through tne mitts of tho evening, throws a sheen of brightness over the water, and lights up the towers of the city in the distance. Altogether, the painting is one of rare merit, and will add largely to the pleasure of the aight of the seeing public. THE 6CBNEBY Has bec-n renovated and retouched, with such addi tions as the increased size of the staj’e demands, and is so arranged that it can be transferred with quick ness, thus dispensing with the trouble and annoyance of catching, etc., in shift ng. THE STAGE Has been greatly enlarged, and has a frontage of SO feet (within the proscenium) with a depth of 42 feet— giving ample scope for any and all purposes. The dressing rooms, on the right of the stage, aro elegant ly fitted up and of tasy access io the stage. THE CAPACITY Of the Hall is ample and will afford sufficient and am ple room for any audience, and will scat comfortably 2,000 persons. We cannot close ibis notice without paying a mer ited tribute to Mr. DeGive, whose energy and enterprise has added so much to the pleasure and amusement of Atlanta, snd we hope that our people will show their opprcciation by bestowing a liberal patronage upon this inotitutirn. Mr. Tucker, the competent, efficient, and accommodating manager of the bouse, is too well known and highly appreciated to mention further, than to add our evidence to this fact. We hop© that all true friends of pleasure will prop erly appreciate this evidence of Mr. DeGive’a inter est in our city ’» welfare, and come up nobly in sup port of bis enttrprize. PENCILETTES. A monument for ex-Governor Brown, intended for the grave cf bis eon Fiank, arrived yesterday by tbc Western and Atlantic Railroad. It is very handsome, and cost $17,CC0. We asked a merchant ^yesterday, “How is the panic ?” Pulling off bis hat impressively, and point ing to his b<ad, be says, “Do yen tea those gray hairs?” “Yes, sir.” “Every one came there since Jay Cooke broke.” The Atlanta companies are drilling every night, pre paring for the Macon Fair. Happy Cal Wagner will be here this next wr«kto redeem a premise which he made to the Ladies’ Me morial Association last winter, viz: to give a benefit lor their monument fund.f Some of them thought Cal wouldn’t come back to make his promise good, but we could have told them better. He’s a man it will al ways do to count on. Our youDg friend, J. T. Shuttle, has just returned after a trip to Cincinnati and other places, and will go in the fruit business very extensively this season. An avaricious African was passing down Whitehall about dark last evening and when in front of the store of Messrs. Fieisbel k Co. he mistook the string of shoes exposed there as a sign for something else and made a back salary grab. He was detected and pursued. The negro escaped, snd the shoes were gathered up for a distancs of a whole block. The “exquisites” all go to Clarke’s for Ibeii cant s. He has all sorts—from an electioneering bruiser to a moat delicate monkey bead. The duBt ytstreday was so tliitk and tame that even the dray mules imbibed ths infection, and the snort ing was beard from Dan’s cigar store to Beerman k Kurtz’s. The meeting of the 7th ward politicoes took place last Light in front of Dutch Petu’s. Tue question was fully argued and settled, and the country is eafer than it was before. Several gentlemen from foreign States participated in tho “rebellion,” and will be, of course, compelled to take back seats—when the thing is settled. Officer Green Hd and had a lively timolast night in arresting a negro woman and her husband, who lived out on Taylor’s Hill. Some misunderstanding be tween th»m resulted in her breaking a desert plate over hts bead, for which imult he ran all the way to town to get an officer to arrest her. If it was announced that one of the prettiest girls in Monroe county was at present in the city, it might cause a flutter among some of our boys. WAR DECLARED. HOW THE HOTS DO IT.
