NOTES OP TRAVEL. [BY AN ATLANTA HEBALD CORRESPONDENT- 3 the river anil across tbe Albemarle Sotind, brings yon to nags’ head, the best seaside resort in the Southern States. It is directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Three miles across the Sound is ROANOKE ISLAND, where some olthe earlier military operations of the war were carried on. It was here that Captain O. Jennings Wise was killed. Stroll ing over tbe island, now inhabited almost ex- clusivelv negroes by, and nothing, indeed, save a barren, sandy waste, we noticed three monu ments, and from one of them we copied the following inscription: TO THE MEMORY of THOMAS FITZPATRICK, Died 19th October, 1861, AGED 39 TEARS. Erected by his comrades in arms, the Sourke Guards, 3d Eeg’t Ga. Vol’rs, C. S. A. I give yon the inscription verbatim et lite ratim, which tells of some poor Georgia sol dier's fate. The grave is under a lone live oak, and the monument is in an excellent state of preservation, never having been harmed in the slightest daring the occupancy of the island by tbe Federals. But this letter is growing too leDgtay, so we will cease tbe scrawl, and resume in another at Nags’ Head. J. G. S. N* TORE ADVERTISEMENTS. Trip Down the James—The Dutch Gap Ca nal—Hip Haps—Sea-ell’s Point—Norfolk and a ‘‘Fish Story”—The Dismal Swamp and Canal—A Huge Bee Farm—Elizabeth City, N. C. Nags’ Head — Boanoke Island and the Grave of a Georgia Soldier. Leaving Fredericksburg with a sigh of re gret, we pass on to Richmond again, where we take one of the James river packets for Nor folk. Aside from the beautiful farms that line each bank of tbe river, there Is hut little to attract the attention of the traveler, as he winds along the tortuous course of the grand old river. Fifteen miles below Richmond, we come to tbe famous Dutch Gap Canal, a last ing "cat” ou the engineering skill and ability of the late moral candidate for Governor of Massachusetts. Tbe ‘‘canal’’ cuts off about seven miles of tbe liver, and is now pretty generally used by all vessels that ply the river. Tbe ''canal” is just ninety yards in length, and is simply a "cnt” from one bank of the river to the other. It is about thirty feet wide, and in depth of water twelve feet. Rapidly steaming by all places of historic interest, we next came to “Bue de’Lean,” which is none other than a large wooden hotel on the barren peak of Sewell's Point. The resort is a new one, but has al ready become somewhat popular with the Richmond and Baltimore pleasure seekers, who do not relish the pure and revivifying And everything, air of the mountains. Yonr steamer touches a few minutes at Fortress Monroe, prim-looking and cannon frowning as ever; rnna within a stone's throw of the “Rip-Raps” now being thoroughly fortified by the Government, and runs back tip the bay to the CITX OF NORFOLK. Norfolk has been improved greatly since the war, and now boasts of a fine hotel, well paved streets, fine water works, and street carB to all points. The Government is build ing several fine war ships at tbe Navy Yard, and this throws a large force of mechanics in the city, who give necessarily quite an im petus to trade. General Mahone has erected some fine warehouses for the reception of freight transferred from the “ old Dominion line of New York steamers to the “Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio railroad,” from Norfolk to Bristol. Of late years Nor folk has grown to be quite a cotton market, and the merchants boast that they pay better prices tban even Baltimore, Charleston or Wilmington. The “staple” mostly comes from tbe Eastern shore counties, and from the Atlantic coast of North Carolina, which localities have never raised cotton until since the war. The climate and salt sea air seems peculiarly propitious to the growth of the plant, and we taw many fields in Virginia and North Carolina, which would compare very favorably with those of Southwestern Georgia and the canebrake regions of Alabama. Strange that the discovery that cotton could be successluliy groan in these regions was never made until within the past six or seven years. What Norfolk boasts of more than anything el-e, however, is her famons fish and oyster market, claimed, with some show of truth, to be the finest and bis‘ in the world. Visiting the market early in XOW p.EADY AT •he morning, you can find almost every spe- cies of suit and fresh water fish iu the world. The most sought after are ‘‘spot,’ - “rnnlleV “white perch," and “so.e.” You can buy a string of ‘20 “spots’ —enough to make break fast delicions for a dozen—for the astonish ingly low price of 23 cents. As for the oys ters, they are simply superb. The month having an “ R " in it, we tried them and can speak “ feelingly." The “Cherry Stone," “Carter's Creek,” “Linn Haven ” and “Sib ley’s Select” are the choicest varieties. Tbe stranger need have no fear on visiting here that he will not get supplied with “ fish and oysters.” The hotels, restaurants and “board ing houses” all “plant” on this line. They give you “fish aud oysters” for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, tea, supper, and last of all, light you to bed with “fish oil lamps,” where a picture of a “ whale and a sea serpent,” lithographed in true sensation style, meets yonr gaze, last thing at night, and first thing in the morn ing. “ Doing ” this place like all others, “in a hurry,” we leave again at six o'clock in the morning for a trip on the celebrated DISMAL SWAMP CANAL, which leads from Norfolk to Elizabeth City, Niith Carolina, a distance of fifty miles. Having so often beard of the “Dismal Swamp,” and even read in “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” where it was the abode of horrible serpents, terril lj wild animals and down-cast “runaway re proes,” we were surprised at seeing and being in the locality Itself. As Spriggms said when ho looked at Niagara Falls, so said we when we saw the much talked of Dismal Swamp. “Not so darned much of a place after all.” The canal is a little shallow cat fifteen feet in width and six to eight feet deep. The bolts that ply this “water communication” would be considered ‘‘somehen coop” on the upper end of Whitel a'l street, but as boats they are of the “pocket size.” It takes just twelve hours to make the “run” between the two cities abovo named, and after you have finished the “run” you feel pretty effectually played. The swamp itself is a large tract of marshy, overflowed land, grown npin juniper and cypress, but which skillful engineers have decided could be easily drained. A large business is carried on by the cutting | down and shipping to Northern ports of the j cypress and jUDiper tiea. Several large mills | are on the route of the canal, which seem ; to be very busy and thriving. The pro- j cess of cutting or sawing down the tree j is a somewhat novel one to the uninitiated. ; A frame work, containing a circular saw, is ! placed upon the canoes. This is paddled up to a large tree, and in about two minutes | “down goes the Iree,” which is lopped of its | branches and floated down the stream to tbe mill. Another considerable curiosity ou the j canal boat, meets yon at Lake Drummond. I It is a BEE FARM. There are three thouiand gums set up in rotation and iu streets, until tho bee town looks like a well built city. The bees feed upon the wild flowers of the swamp, and the yield of honey is immense. The honey is of a very fine quality, and Bells faster than it can be shipped to Baltimore and New York. The proprietors of tho farm have grown qmte rich on this product, making, it is said, during the last season, some twenty thousand | Al’i’ROVED RISKS TAKEN IN THIS j dollars clear money. Century Whisky! THE CENTURY WHISKIES A PURE ! T hey are differently prepared from any Wlrsky in the market, and arc chiving many old, and until now favorite brand , out of tho merket, because the principle upon which they are made is superior. They are first carefully distilled from se lected stock and stored away until they have attained a certain age, when they are llc-DLtillul by :i Peculiar Process, which extracts the fusel oil, but retains tho essential oils of the grain. It is the fusel oil which possesses the poisonous properties, and imparts the sharp, acrid flavor noticeable iu many brands of whisky; it is the ferment and essential oils which impart the rich, oily, mellow flavor, and it is principally in EXTRACTING THE FUSE .. GIL, and retaining the essential oils, which constitutes tho superiority aud peculiarity of this process. At the time of re-distillation, the packages are thoroughly cleansed aud steamed out, refilled with the perfected product, and again stored away to ripen and mellow with age, which it does in a much greater de gree than is possible without such treatment. We di vide it into different grades, according to ago, desig nated as X, XX, XXX and XXXX, and the latter chal lenges comparison with ANY WHISKY. Witliont Rigan) to Age or Price. The almost universal testimony of those who have used the CENTURY WHISKIES is that there Is an en tire absence of headaches and other disagreeable after effects se often experienced in the use or other brands.
