F. B PHINIZY,
C. H. PHINIZY & CO.,
Society always was in a delightful cc
lion in Spain. How delightful it is just now
may be appreciated by reading the following
account of an Englishman and some brig
ands: .
Mr. Andrew Graham, residing at Dema, in
Spain, was the resident agent of the fruit
house of Graham & Co., Mincing Lane, Lon- erL
don. On the night of the 13th of September.
about 8 o’clock, ns he was proceeding to his gf.o. e. ratcliffe. w. h. chew.
suburban home, Le was attacked brigand^. njv mm a m/'iM ■ r<a
Ihcr object, tbe frnit merchant thmk s j»s (JH0. h, RATCLIFFE & C0„
to carry him oft to the mountains ana there * ’
hold him for a ransom, which is highly prob
able. Near the avenue enhance of his house
six or eight (or ho (thinks probably move)
masked men stopped him in his tartana (the
carriage peculiar to Valencia) by unpleas- a.>w

right of him, guns to the left ol him, guns „.
right before him, and a follow with a disagree
able-looking knife iu his rear. The fruit mer
chant took iu the situation at a glance. He
immediately drew his faithful revolver, and
attacked the Fra Diavolonians with a reckless
disregard of consequences, which must have
astonished their individual nervous systems.
When he had thus let off bis firework?, he
changed his base by jumping out of the tar- 1
tana and running away. A gun was fired and
he fell—not wounded, however. He got up
and fell again, and then the brigands were
very lively with their fireworks. Twelve or
sixteen balls were wafted all around about
him, and one fellow strnck him in the thigh
with a shot. Then the brigands came up and
were going to make short work with him, but
he wrenched a gun from the loremost,
strnck him to the ground with the butt-end,
served out tlm same sauce to two i ments OF COTTON
others, and then found himself face to face
with a desperate-looking scoundrel who was
at the other end of a gun, and the muzzle of
that gun looking right square into the eyes of
the fruit merchant. Mr. Graham was begin
ning to think it almost fruitless to continue
to struggle against this system of “double .
banking” a poor lone foreigner, but 4 never
say die until you are killed,” is a sound pro- j
verb, and tbe frnit merchant went in again
on his muscle, and leveled his gun at the
brigand. The guns blazed at the same in-;
*>tant, and that was the last seen of that
brigand. The other brigands then came up j
and pitched in. and having no more fire-
works, Mr. Graham threw stones at them ;
trom a heap by the roadside. Beating
them off in this way, he ran at the top of his
speed towards Benia, bleeding out of the j
wounds, and crying out for the police like j
any other man. He then lay down among
some vines, and shortly afterward? heard the
tartana driven off rapidly’ towards Oudara.
When the authorities reached the field of bat-1
tie, they found a masked man dead, and then
they found the blood-stained tartana near
Oudara. Two others of the brigands have :
since died, and the police sent others to their (
account in a smart skirmish, not, however,
withent losing two or more oi .keu t\\:i mesa. ;
The fruit merchant was badly used up with
wounds and bruises, but the shots have been
extracted, and hopes are entertained ot his !

A Look at Wall Street. -If you go down
to Wall street, you will find the bluest, most
“tired,” hopeless, woe-begoue set of unfoitu- ;

out. Everything is going to “the demnition ,
bow-ows,” and a general “bust tip” is as firm- ,
ly believed in as the Second Advent used to
be by the Hitlerites. Just now Wall street is APPROVED
a good place to keep away from, if you want
to be cheerful and to keep your bead clear and
level. Bat, outside of that limited arena of j
sacrifice of gored Bears and ^lacerated Bulls, ,
tbe aspect of the situation is quite cheerful.
While Lake Shore stock is imining down to
most melancholy depths of depies->ion, the
