r::i i 4 ■ * L_ _0 J TRI I BESIl'ESTUI. KISSIX ress. In Toledo, Ohio, on lhM*d»y Iftat, ftWies reception was Riven at the Boody House to the President, and Gene. Sherman, Sheridan and Caster. The Toledo Commercial says: As the ceremony progressed, a certain famil iarity grew up between the visitors and ladies, and gallant Phil Sheridan broke the ice of the occasion by picking np n little girl in hts arms and pressing his bristling inn.uiche to her velvet lips. Of course Gen. Coster followed suit, and it was not long before Cr.n. Sherman, acd even the President himself, were pressing their stiff beards against the rosy lips of the little girls, and portraying every indication of hav- cg no great objection to being allowed a little mere license as regarded the age of the per sons kissed. The crowd still pushed on, and it seemed as if there was just a slight rnsh on the part of the ladies to hurry up the stairs wBen they beard that the pleasant pastime of kissing tho President was a feautora of the reception. It was not long before the gallant Phil took another departure and astonished the crowd by kissing a young lady of some sixteen or eighteen summers. Gen. Caster, declaring bo would not be outdone, also seized and kissed the yonng lady, and then Gen. Sherman began to look around for ft good model. He soon fonnd one and imprinted a kiss up on her fair cheek, only to iei her pass by him and kiss Gens. Sheridan and Custer. The President blushed at the rash ness of his yoirng offieeis, but directly his eves began to sparkle, and he took out his pocket handkerchief and wiped his mouth. The next real handsome young lady who made her appearance was the fortunate first ■ grown” lady to get a kiss from the President r.f the C. S. The President seized her hand and pointed his mouth for hers. She drew back at first, but becoming immediately cognizant of the great honor conferred upon her, she yielded, and the President gave her lips a soft touch—hardly sufficient to bo called a kiss. Of course Generals Sherman, Sheridan and Custer saw this, and a roar of applause was the result. Gen. Sherman declared he was as good loooking as the . resident, gallant l’hil then pleaded that he knew he was ns handsome as Gen. Sher man, and then Custer was very certain he looked as lovely as any of the rest, and hence ; ;he young lady kissed them all, one after the j ‘‘.her. This of course opened an excellent! opportunity for the fair belles of Toledo and the sunny daughters of the rural districts to kiss the President and some of the military heroes of the late war, and they took advan tage of the opportunity. Immediately there : mnenced a friendly rivalry between Gener als Phil Sheridan and Custer to see who could get the most kisses. The gallant Phil took tho lead, and for a time kissed every iady who shook bauds with him—except those who were homely. ;e o» tbe gay creatures. FrMu ike Gr.jfclc It is a remark olten beard in Paris that the ! women who hold equivocal positions lead j happier and moro satisfactory lives than do 1 women as wives, which, if true to • certain j extent, does not affect the fact equally inr-1 portaDt, that their deaths are generally the reverse. One of these ‘'hsppy-lived” crea-1 tures furnished an illustration the other day. j She was handsome, charming, gay, witty, ! extravagant. She had an elegant home, an | elegant turnout, an elegant dressmaker. { Everything that tisle could demand and j money could furnish she had. She was the favorite of a man of rank and fortune, and ; had been for twenty years. She boro bis ] name, and gave it to her son. But one sad | day he died, leaving her only his name—at least the right to bear it. Accustomed to a luxurious life, bhe could not now dispense with it, allbough reduced to i comparative beggary. Her son held a fine financial position, but ho soon infoimed his extravagant mother that her bills would ruin him, and ceased to be accountable for her debts. Then she formed an alliance with a j rich upholster. He gave her a fine establish- ; ment, audwent gaily, until be fonnd that his business or his “amie” must be sacrificed. So he told madamo she must be economical. : But, as she was in debt everywhere and owed ' everybody, especially her dressmaker, and had exhausted her credit, her debtors levied on i her magnificent furniture, and the day of sale drew near She invited her upholster to breakfast with ; her, and after baoqu?ting him to the extent a breakfast would allow, told him she must ' have that day 6,000 francs. He swore he j could not raise the required sum, and, amid j her tears and sobs, took up his hat and said ' «u revoir. “You will never see me again," said ma- i dame, in response to his adieu. He thought it a feminine “dodge,”, and descended the ssairs. Wben he stepped oat on the side walk something fell with a horrible thud at his feet. There was a spatter of blood and brains and a dead woman. His companion at breakfast bad thrown herself from a sec ond story window. He call hef servant, and tho two carried the corpse tip to her room. 1“'Happy?' H 'Satisfactory N. Fighting a ‘‘Coaster.” IMiED BATTLE WIT 11 V MADDENED TEXAS STEKK. A Spanish hull fight, upon a small scale, 'v.'.s witnessed yesterday upon the Kansas Pa cific Railway, at a small station called Ogden. Tho fight was in a common cattlo car. be tween Major N. B. George, of Kansas City, and a wild and Ticions steer, which had, by some means been gored acd trodjen down by the stronger animals in the car. It appears that a train loaded with cattle belonging to Major George, had been switched upon the Ogden side-track lor tho purpose of unloading the cattle, and thereby saving the live3 of several steers which had laid down and were unable, owing to the crowded state of the car, to arise. All of the cattle had been relieved except one, a large bony “coaster" from the Kio Grande, which refused to get up. Maj. George resorted to the drover’s nev er-failing remedy in such cases, “tail twisting." He made several hard twists upon the animals tall, when suddenly, before the Major could escape from danger, the enraged aod no doubt insulted animal was upon him goriug and dashing at him in frenzied madness. The first lungu made by the animal caught Major George's nostril npon his hom and tore it up, the hom also inflicting a serious wound upon his eyebrow. The animal was making des perate lungos to gore its tormentor when he caught it by the horcs and was tossed over the car like a straw. Prompt assis tance was fortunately rendered and the en raged long-horn Wits beaten to the farther end of the car. Maj. George was backing out of the car, glad to escape, when the brute made a last desperate attempt to vent its lory npon him. T.e steer made a rapid dash at him just as he reached the door and caught him between it a horns, and raising him np threw him over tiio fence and the cattle chute. Ma jor Georgs sustained some painful though not serious injuries, and besides a slight disfigure ment, will -non be as sound as ever. ent of the $2—cheap friendship, considering he is a King. It was a fine hall, which he ! gave in honor of the English Admiral, and ; the King was the first who got gloriously drunk; next came the musicians, then the gnests, and finally I myself began to feel a little unsteady. I saw a young English naval officer occupy the kingly throne, with a Honolulu girl by his side, while the King and Queen Emma sat at his feet. Then the King took a drum and walked around the floor, beating the tattoo. Finally the musi cians began quarreling and fighting in rog- nlar John Ball style, so that the Admiral could not part thorn; and all this in tho midet of the Court ball, lint our King is said to have amused himself exceedingly, particularly as lots of drinkables remained tor him to con sume himself, though an awful quantity was drank. Wbether he did consume it all, I don't know; but it is said tuat ho was not so-; her for two weeks atterwaid, though he can stand a vast amount. Otherwise the Kirg is : a good fellow, and likes us Germans particu-: larly, probably because wo “treated” him so often wben he was merely Crown Prince. He ' has even learned some German songs, which ho sings passably; for instance, “When the; swallows homeward fly,” and “Oat of the; tavern I’ve jast stepped to-night” removes T.r, Pitch, Iron oi Ink Stains and Grease; for workers in Machine Shops, Mines, &c., is invaluable. For making the Skin White and Soft, and giving it a “bloom of beauty.’’ it ta an- surpassed by any cosmetic known. HANDS APOLIO co*ts 10 to 15 c«nt« per cake, and every body «houid have it.
