A large and enthusiastic meeting of the

A STB EXT CAB DRIVER BADLY HURT.
It becomes onr sad dnty to chronicle a cd-
lision of the street cars on Peachtree street,
which resulted m seriously injuring Mr.
Willbome, the driver on one
of the cars. The causes of
the accident, as far as we can learn, are
about as follows: On yesterday about 2
o’clock, the car which Mr. Willborne was
driving arrived at the sideling in front of Mr.
Fowler’s, on Peaohtree street, a little ahead
of time. After waiting some time for
the other car to pass, he, at
the reqnest of the passengers,
left bis car and walked ahead to hurry up the
other car. He came back riding on the front
of the car bis passengers were waiting for.
Jnst before they arrived at tho crossing one
of his passengers loosened the breaks
and intended to drive to the end
of the crossing. When ho arrived
at the desired place he tried to stop the car
by stopping the mules instead of putting on
the brakes. Mr. Willborne, seeing that a
collision would ensue if the brakes were not
immediately put on, attempted to jump from
one car to the other, and prevent any acci
dent, when he missed his foothold and fell
between the two cars, which ran together,
movement meets with onr approval, and we j catching his head between them and
wish these gentlemen Godspeed in their un
dertakmg. We shall, at all times, be found
earnestly advocating any measure that tends
to the social, moral or intellectual improve
ment of the meehanic.

Dear Sir—Iu reply to your letter of the
22d instant, asking information in relation to
the proposed construction of a system of
water supply in Atlanta, the cause of delay,
etc., I have to say that the Board of Water
Commissioners have used every eflort in their
power daring the present year, to inaugurate
an effective system of Water Works in the
city, and some few months ago succeeded in
getting authority from the City Council to is
sue $300,000 water bonds lor that purpose.
The bonds have been executed, and will
soon be ready for negotiation. Specifications
would have been made, and doubtless the
contract let, but for the financial troubles in
volving the whole country during the last
few months
I think it may be 6aid for the Water Com
missioners, that they will proceed as early as
j possible next year to make permanent loca-

Katie Fatuaiu.
Those who visited the Opera House last
night bad an ample opportunity for becom
ing liberally enthused over the splendid ren
dition of tbe domestic drama, Dickens' "Old
Cariosity Shop,” and Miss Katie Putnam in
her dual cnaractcr of “Little Nell,” and the
Marchioness.” It is certainly no easy task
to render successfully a single character that
brings into play the different emotions of the
cast, bat when two characters that
antagonize socially are successfully
readered by tbe same party, it is unquestion
ably the truest evidence ol superior artistic
ta'eat aud training, Katie Putnam stamps
herself the female artist of the Southern stage
and the pet of the public. Her native grace
and ariieasnsss is a characteristic that but
few possess. Mr. Brown as Dick Swiveller,
gave evidence of his superior talent in serio
comedy, and evinced rara talent. Qnilp was
also good, aud in fact, the entire support was
good, reflecting great credit upon the mana
gers. To night we are to have tbe Blade
O'Grass, with the same unexceptionable cast
of characters. We bespeak them a good
house. We were pleased to notice the good
behavior last night, and hope that it is the
inauguration of a new era in the behavior of
the audience.
