enemy held high carnival with her myrmi
dons, on through the darksome hours ot the
night, and jug and canteen were filled to last
through the seige of to-day.
Bright and early the ladies were r.t their
posts. Mrs. Ward’s advantage—gained on
Wednesday, when she compelled the praying
women to cease coming into her saloon, and
by a movement ou their flank, drove them
entirely off her pavement and to the opposite
side of the street—is yet sustained. The ex
perience of the cooking-stove, with its stunt
ed pipe, from w hose aperture the dingy smoke
was driven hither and thither by the wind in
to the faces of the surrounding women, was
unpleasant enough, and so this morning tbe
stove was dispensed with. A plank platform
was laid and a table placed, surrounding
which the ladies vigorously resumed the of- I
tensive. Mis. Ward lelt her lortress at one I
time and went up into town, leaving a boy to j
guard the entrance. She returned with her j
arms full of packages, doubtless grocenos lor !

I surrender. At length the wail of chilled
forms and discouraged hearts spread among
the wearied ladies, and as the bell of the
Church summoned the town to prayers, the
siege was raisedagaiD, and they went to com
mune and be encouraged among sympathizing
friend*. Mr*. Ward’s pertinacious reei-»tance
is telling on the delicate physique of the cru
sading ladies, whose hearts and resolves are
stonter than their physical powers of endu
rance.
About eleven o’clock, however, they conld
be seen returning, moving in slow but firm
battalion, snd once again the struggle recom
menced, and is progressmg fc as I wiite. The
vivandieres are bringing tbe good ladies their
dinners. An elemental striie is threatened,
as the heavy clouds portend a storm. The
afternoon looms up dark and disconsolate,
and the case looks desperate indeed ! What
if tbe field be lest ? But perish the thought.
The ladies are fixed in their resolve to con-
qoer—though they may be more determined
to do than skillful how to d).
It is currently reported, with how much of
truth I cannot say, that the ladies are confi
dent of the success of a stragetic movement!
being now made. As the rumor goes, they |
had one of the Protestant ministers of the ;
town write a letter to the Catholic priest in
Knoxville, desiring hi* aid and that his '
priestly influence be brought to bear on tLe
stubborn Mrs. Ward. And it is said that an
answer has been received promising to do
what he can to cause her to yield. There is
also renewed talk nf baying her stock of the
ardent. It is understood that Mrs. Ward
agrees to quit the business if the ladies will
purchase her saloon and stock of liquor.
The feminine crusaderfi cannot bear the
idea of not closing np Mrs. Ward's
place, and a desperate case may need
even this peculiar and doubtful remedy to
be applied ere victory will perch on the tem
perance banner. Mr*. Ward has a nearly
helpless husband and five children de
pending on her for support. The sifge has
doubtless pressed heavily on her scanty store,
and she, perhaps, feds that to yield her:
means of maintaining her family, without i
{ jroper pecuniary compensation, wonld be to
eave her a pensioner on the cold bounty of
the world.
All the interi st is centered before Mrs.
Ward’s. The town saloons doubileas elude
the vigilance of the feminine pickets, at
times, but an attack in force on them, after
Mrs. Ward's submission, it is well known,
would promptly compel their entire submis
sion.
