As I have been referring io this feature I
may beiv appropriatelj’ mention the death ot
Mr. T. O C. BuckJv, which Las ju>t occurred
in bis liitifth year. Ii is a matter cf note that
his futLet-in-law, end also It gal partner, J.is.
W. G«3rard, died last year. Thus iu a brief
time a largo gup has bteu made iu a great le
gal tiun. M r . Gerard was tho richest lawyer
in this city, and left an estato of more than
a million. This may be accounted for when
we see the fees such men charge. They will
not look at a case without $303 retaining lee,
which enables them to examine its merits,
and tfi< n every step is accompanied wi’h cor-
leiponding charges. Such fees would ruiu
any ordinary client; but when an estate worth
u million is ri sluice, these apparently enor
mous expenses can he met. Mr. BackL-y was
rc’aiued in the dtdenso of the ii i?, an 1 did
good seivice in the trial of Oakley Hall, and
also in that or Tweed. As the ring had plen
ty of money, it is probable that his fres from
this latter cave were not less than $30 000. —
It is easy paring a lawyer when one has such
an iftBimmsefuad of plunder. It has bteu
sanl that Tweed’s defense cost $1,500,000.—
Jarni R W. Gerard was employed in a number
of important will cabas, and could charge
whatever he chose. SSuch men may dictate
terms, aud whether it be $50,000 or $’,5,000
is a matter < f comparative small inport.—
What is wanted is success, and to obtain this
one must submit to sacrifices. Great law
suits an* like great wars, und the conflict is
necessarily expensive.
