From the Sen Francisco Chronicle.
The annual meeting of the Consolidated
Virginia Mining company was held yester
day, at which the principal officers present
ed their record of the year’s transactions.
TH8 PRESIDENT’S REPORT.
Edward Barron, the president, made his
anneal report, as follows:
The fiscal year just closed has been an
eventful one for the company regarding
both prosperity and misfortune. Through
out the vear there has been no cessation in
the payment of the regular monthly divi
dends, which for the last ten months have
been at the rate of $10 per share. Work
at the mine has been steadily prosecuted
m the way of exploration and extraction of
ore, the latter being done at au extensive
rate. In October last the very disastrous
fire, which destroyed so great a part of Vir
ginia City, swept away the fine and exten
sive hoisting-works and buildings, together
with a vast amount of supplies of various
kinds, and the splendid 60 stamp Consoli
dated and California mills (the latter of
which was about starting up), materially
affecting the cradling facilities.
THIS MISFORTUNE
compelled the stoppage of nearly all un
derground work and ore extraction, and
• 1 the cessation of bullion ship-
meats until the hoisting-works and other
necessary buildings could be replaced. This
has been done, and new works and build
ings superior to those destroyed were
erected in the short space of two months.
To the great executive ability and indomi
table energy of the Superintendent, James
G. Fair, yon are indebledgfor so early a re
placement of the numerous and extensive
buildings necessary to the proper working
of the mine; and when the many and for
midable obetacles which had to be over
come are taken into consideration, too
much praise cannot be awarded. In the
aec unpanying reports of the Superintend
ent and Secretory, to which yon are re
spectfully referred, will be found full de
tails of the working mine, and tue receipts
and disbursements for the past year.
THE COMraO TEAR
opens most anspicionsly, and with the pre
sent facilities for ore extraction and in
creased milling capacity soon to be added,
the bullion production for the year seems
likely to be almost unlimited, with the
prospect also that the millions disbursed
tn dividends the past year will be more
than equalled in the year before us.
THE SUFEaiNTENDENT’s STATEMENT.
Superintendent James G. Fair’s report
of the working of the mine for the year
1875, was as follows:
During the past year 160,307 tons ot ere
have been extracted from all the levels ot
the Consolidated Virginia mine, 169,094
tons have been reduced which yielded $16,-
6&US53 in bulliou. There are now in the
ore house and at the mills 2,988 tons, val
ued by assay at $478,080. This ore has
beea token from the 1,200,1,300,1,400 and
1,600-foot levels, including a small quantity
which has been gathered in the exploration
e which bad been made on the 1,800-foot

as far as they extend north. On the 1.400
foot level the ore has been explored south
460 feet from the shaft, and it extends
north from the shaft to the northern boun
dary of the mine. On this (the 1,400-foot)
level we know the exact width of the ore
, body. On the 1,600-foot level the ore has
been traced south for a distance of 480
feet fro® the northern line, and has been
thoroughly explored by crosscuts from the
t-T* wS to the west wall. On this level

Ono minister of the Gospel, at least, has
grown too sharp to be caught by the three-
card monte men, or any other agents of
Belial that infest railroad trains to gain the
confidence of the passengers and “gather
them in.” An employe of the Iowa Cen
tral Railroad invented a conductor’s de
tective box, which was lately adopted as a
check upon conductors on the road. It is
an oblong box. with ticket pigeon-holes
answering to. the various stations on the
road.' The regulation requires that the
passenger should take out a ticket, and the
box is so contrived that only one ticket
can come out at a tune. The conductor
carries around the box at all way stations.
A stiffly starched preacher got on, wanted
to go to El Dorado. The conductor pre
sented his box and asked the preacher to
“take a card.” His holiness arose in a
towering, red rage and dashed the diaboli
cal box from him. He took a violent re
ligious fit, and frothed at the month, and
flashed at the eyes, and just stormed im
precations upon card players, and the
monte men in particular. He could not
be prevailed upon to take a card, so the
conductor had to put him off in the woods
among the Iowa wolves. TLat good man
had some time loet at some innocent game
and could not be caught again. He pre
ferred to walk to El Dorado in uncontam-
mate purity.
President Van Rensselaer, of Hobart
College, at Geneva, has resigned on ac
count of difference between the Faculty
and the Board of Trustees. The trouble
originated in the attempted removal, two
years ago, ot one of the members of the
Faculty and a difference of opinion regard
ing the prerogatives of the President.
Since that time the Facnlty and the Trus
tees have been divided, a part supporting
and the others opposing Dr. Van Rensse
laer. In this state of things the college
has been declining, the result Deing the
doctor’s resignation. The sympathy of
the students appears to be with the Presi
dent.
