1 ^rBT EttlGBANTS SHOULD GO SOUTH.
To iU Editor of the Brooklyn, Bugle:
Public sentimont at the South has experienced
chance on the subject of diversified labor that
■'- destined to render that section the most pros-
«rons of any portion of our country. Former-
lv they preferred to pay the profits on manufac
tured products and transportation, rather than
_ , oa r8ge the artisan at home. All their ener.
tj e3 with slave labor were directed to the culti
vation of those rich products of cotton, rico and
sugar, for which their section enjoyBa monopoly.
From every representative of public opinion
we perceive that tho people are alive to their
tnieintorests, that of encouraging not only the
cnltiration of the old staples but of every other
oiodact for which their soil and climate is pe
culiarly adapted. Every portion of the South
modnees com equal to the West, and some sec-
twos grow the best wheat in this country. There
ia no section so rich in the various natural ad
vantages as the Southern States. Almost every
thing that is grown in the Northern and West
ern Slates flourishes there; and beside their
soil and climate they are rich in valuable
timber —the hard pine, every variety of
oak ash, popular, cypress cedar, and other woods
are ’very abundant. And along the Alleghe
nies, from Virginia to Alabama, is probably
the richest section of the world for the variety
of its minerals, coal, iron, copper, zinc, marble
and lime bane been developed in a rude, save-
labor way, for many years. Skilled labor,
science and capital are now directing their at
tention to this region. But perhaps the great
est advantage the South possesses over every
other section of our vast country, is its
water-power, scatter** inmost everywhere
•b rftB . J> _v,ut tho hilly sections of the interior,
Snoiaded with the raw material for working
into manufactured products, and contiguous by
nil and river to the markets of the world, not
requiring three bushels of com to send one
bushel to market.
True. there «£- ’u Uftllt ieg along the low, flat
luds of the coast, near swamps and sluggish
nkr courses that are sickly, but the whole in
terior and hilly sections are more free from lo
cal diseases and epidemics than the West or the
North. In proportion to tho population, more
old persons can be found throughout the Sonth
than in any other section.
We learn that in many of onr cities organiza
tions of colonies are being formed with a view
of exploring the Southern States, and of estab
lishes at suitable localities, the nnclens of
mtnnfaeturing towns and cities. These combi
nations among the different callings is a much
more sensible mode of improving their condi
tions than Trades’ Unions to coerce higher
wages. The contributions required to support
strikes, if applied to sending delegates to spy
out the fertile fields and inviting opportunities
awaiting their ombrace, would enable many a
family nowstrngglingfor existence in the crowd
ed North, to become independent in a few years
in tho sunny South, where there is no class
more welcome than the manufacturer and the
skilled laborer H. IV. II.
The Killing of Noir. ,
Galignani’s Messenger of the 13tb, reporting
the particnlars of the Bonaparte and Noir trag
edy, has the following:
Tho prisoner still asserts that after some con
version with M. de Fonvielle, he asked his in
terlocutors,*in somewhat sharp language,wheth
er they considered themselves as jointly respon
sible with MM. Grousset and Rochefort; that
1L Victor Noir then replied in the affirmative,
and struck the Prince in the face. Immediately
the latter, who has long been accustomed, ac
cording to the testimony of some witnesses, to
carry a small revolver, drew oat the weapon and
find. The Prince added that had he not been
provoked by M. Noir he should not have shot
him, as JL de Fonvielle—a point the latter does
not deny—was tho person who had spoken dar
ing the interview. The fact is asserted that
immediately after the scene which had taken
place, Doctors Pinel and Morel had found the
traces of a blow on Prince Pierre Bonaparte’s
left cheek, near tho neck.
OSLY DEFENDING A MENACED LIFE.
“Uie Prince, in his examination,” says the
Patrie, “reproduced word for word the account
ve have already published. He related the
facts with the greatest tranquility and precision,
and in concluding, expressed tho deepest ifegret
for tho movement of passion to which he had
abandoned himself, and tho sanguinary conse
quences resulting from it. ‘I had 'been grievi-
onsly insulted,’ added ho, ‘and besides, I did no
more than defend my life, which was seriously
menaced.’ On tho other hand,M. de Fonvielle, in
presence of the magistrate, was so violent and
excited that SI. Bernier did not think it right to
confront him with tho prisoner.”
THE INFIRMITIES OP AGE.
Decrepitude is tho natural accompaniment of old
age, but it may be ameliorated, and tho period of
entire helplessness long postponed by tho jndicions
ae» of a healthful stimulant. Physicians, fully
*»ara of this fact, usually recommend moderato
stimulation when tho strength and vigor of matu
rity have been suspended by tho feebleness and
Prostration which are tho inevitable results of do-
! years. Port wino, brandy and other liquors
*ro often proscribed by medical men for aged per
sons, bnt the impulse which fermented and distilled
%tora give to the circulation, and the energy they
seem to impart, is transitory, unless the alchobolic
Principle is modified and qualified by the presence
of medicinal tarries and invigorants. Of all the
combinations of diffnaive stimulant with the juices
of herbs, roots and barks that hare ever been ad
ministered to the aged and infirm, with the view of
sustaining their waning strength, cheering their
drooping spirits, and relieving the aches to which
flroy are subjected, none has been found so effi-
efficariou8, so agreeable, and so permanent in its ef
fects, as Hostetler's Stomach Bitters. The differ
ence between the effect of tho Bitters and that of
1 roere excitant, however pure, is the same as be-
tveen the effect of a sudden and momentary appli
cation of exoeaeive force to a given purpose, and
t~o result of a steady, continuous application of
exactly the requisite amount of force to the same
cud. Tho mere spirit of physical energy produced
‘-7 » dram, and which is always succeeded by a oor-
Ksponding depression, never yet benefitted any
roan or woman suffering from physical decay. A
roriial like Hoe tetter's Bitters, at once soothing
invigorating, is the remedial agent required.

Ed.toss Gxoboia Wisely Tilkgbaph. Macon, Ga..-
Gentlemen—The publie have much cause to be in
debted to I on, for publishing in your valuable jour
nal of the 14 th instant, the article—" A Plea for the
Baliet”; bnt as some times a journalist in the
discharge of his duty, becomes the unintentional
medium of injury to the innocent and deserving
where his object was only to meet out justice to the
“wrongdoer," it may reasonably be supposed; that
with the proverbial proneness of the human kind to
seize with avidity npon aDy .such sensational matter
as so strictly appertains to the dearest interests of
Borne as the article referred to does, that it becomes
not impossible, nor improbable, for it ts arrive at
false deductions, from the preparation under cen
sure,” and thus, erroneously, condemn and distrust
all so-cslled “Soothing Syrups,” before wailing to
discriminate between the friend and the foe of the
household. Such being A not unlikely inference,
silence on our part would become culpable, as haring
a tendency to lend color to the supposition that the
Southern institution of the 8. 8. 8. was also to be
classed in the 'category of pernicions and danger
ous compounds, while the contrary is the case. We
feel, therefore, that we owe it to truth and justice, to
offer some explanation and vindication of the S. S. 8.,
lest, by tacitinactivity, we imply an acknowledgment
Of a righteous libel, in permitting the suoaettio falsi
t> suppress the euggeitio veri; wo therefore offer no
apology for asking attention to the following facts:
Firstly. There is a distinction and a wide difference
between the nature of the 8. 8.8. preparation and
other so-called Soothing Syrups.
Secondly. The inventor of it, an experienced and
educated physician of over thirty yean practical deal
ings with disease, medicine, and its uses, only claims
tropical plant, the virtues of which are as familiar to
the old. experienced physicians of the South as the use
of catnip tea Is to its mothers generally. No woman's
name, therefore, is required to shelter its author from
moral responsibility or just obloquy; and heeheer-
fully assumes the weight of any such consequencos, it
being “tantjpeur et tant reproche ”
Thirdly. It was offered in its present convenient
form, by request, to supply a much felt necessity, ex
isting throughout the South during the dark hour of
her troublous existence. It is, therelore, no newrem-
edv.
Fourthly. It eras widely and extensively used for
upwards of five years, during which period it pre-
served its integrity and maintained its intrinsic value,
under the most trying difficulties; and daring the
whole time not a single word of complaint was ever
uttered atainst it: and though the demand waa far in
excess of the supply, force of circumstance has only
permitted its resumption within the past twelve
months.
Lastly. Its formula is known to many eminent phy
sicians, among whom stands pre-eminent Dr. J. Dar
by. Professor of Chemistry, and its freoiom from all
disturbing and deleterious substances, enables them
to concur in their estimation of its intrinsic worth,
and entire satisfaction of its safety and value as a
remedy for general usein the disorders and comrlaints
indicated in its circulars.
In its action, it is sedative and hypnotic, without
being narcotic, thus avoiding the pernicious effects of
opium and its kindred salts; it is, therefore, a safe
and health-producing adjuvant to Nature’s best and
surest restorative, refreshing sleep. Its composition
is so constituted as to be anti-acid, anti spasmodic and
c&rminative.combined to a gentle stomaehlc tonioeffee t
at once most beneficial to the primes vim and secondeo
viee. thereby strengthening the digestive passages and
hood. It is also peculiar for its great efficacy in nerv
ous restlessnoss, Dysenten\ Diarrhoea, Cholera In
fantum, Flatulent Cholic, Weakness of the Bowels,
etc., and although only presented in form for chil
dren’s use. it is equally efficacious in proportionate
doses for tho adult of either sex—its value not being
dependent upon any special condition of age.
If. therefore, tho 8.8. S. can be charged with em
piricism because converted into a specialty, the au
thor is well satisfied to shoulder the responsibility.
Abler pens than the writer’s have long since proved
by incontrovertible argument that all »»* J,r -
cmpirical, by which we »” ** 1 , - mine is
ing that • . oounderstoodasimply-
...ksu uncertain, unknown and undeter
mined in its action npon the human system and ani-
mal life, until our judgments and opinions can be
formed by careful test and trial 1 None are so absurd
as to advance that nature’s laboratory furnishes the
medicament ready prepared, ticketed and labeled for
use: but, on the contrary, must admit that whatever
wo know of medicine is ; nu ;; of Clinco discovery
by»_» ot , uurnt ln his pursuit of knowledge; and med
ical ethics and nsage are gradually yielding to tho re
cognized fact, that tho medical scientist is equally en
titled to the protection and legitimate fruition of tho
emanations of his brain as the mechanic is who pat
ents a mouse trap or a watch, at which you may light
your cigar or your pipe in tho open air 1 Both have
their ends and uses, both proceed from genius and are
conducive to tho health, the economy and creature
comfort of the microcosm man. We would, therefore,
respectfully ask of all who may be disposed to criti
cise, sneer at, or doubt the integrity of the S. S. S., to
first try the preparation, then to judge: and as their
judgment is founded on the trial of the medicine, so
let it be known to the world— 1 "palmam qui meruit
ferot.”
The mission and destiny of the Southern Soothing
Syrup is to work its own way to public favor by its
own intrinsic merits, which it is fast effecting, a3 it
can be shown that whole communities aro now using
it to the exclusion of all other remedies for similar
complaints. It is open to test analysis and investiga
tion. as it is not sought to surround it with mysticism.
Ilad its demerits been greater than its intrinsic worth,
it would long since have been among the "things that
were," and sunk into nothingness and oblivion.
Yours, etc.. Fiat Jcstitia.

NERVOUS HEADACHE, LIV£JJ COMALAINT,
ETC., ETC.
The brain being the most delicate and sensitive
f all our organs, is necessarily moro or less affect
ed by all onr bodily ailments. A headache is often
tho first symptom of a serious disease. If the ner
vous system is affected, there is always trouble at
its source in the peri-cranium. And it maybe here
remarked that as the nervous fibre pervades tho
entiro frame, no part of the pbyscical struc
ture can be affected without the nerves suffering
sympathetically. Liver complaint of every type af
fects the brain. Sometimes the effect is stupor,
confusion of ideas,hypochondriasis; sometimes per
sistent or periodical headache. In any case, the
best remedy that can be taken is PLANTATION
BITTERS. In headache proceeding from indiges
tion, or biliousness, or both, tho stomachic and an-
ti-billious properties of the preparation will soon
relieve the torture, by removing its cause. If tho
complaint is purely nervous—in other words, if it
has originated in tho nervous system, and is not
the result of sympathy, the BITTERS will be equal
ly efficacious.
So light and delicate are all the preparations made

tPHIS PLOW is now the leading PLOW of the Mid-

testimonials we have from practical Farmers and
Planters, we would call attention to the following ex
tract from a letter received from Col. B. G. LOCK
ETT, of the large planting firm of Jordan A Lockett,
dated Albany, Ga., 27th November, 1869: "Before
closing this letter, I cannot refrain from expresrini
my sincere thanks to you for the invention of the best
Plow now in use. It is the delight of the negro.
Besides doing the ben work that I have ever seen any
Plow do. it runs with more ease to the Plowman and
the draught to theanimal is lighter than any Plow I
have ever seen. Your Plow has already become a
necessity to me, and I would feel ruined without it.
I am satisfied we have saved thousands of dollars an
nually in mules alone. It is thecheapest Plow Ihave
ever used of any kind or description. I am anxious
to bring, if I can, to tho notice of my fellow Planters
this most valuable Plow.”
• Col. Lockett commenced using these Plows in the
spring ot 1868, and now has more than 250 of them on
huplantations.
We have testimonials as emphatic from leading
Farmers in North Carolina, Sonth Carolina, Georgia.
Alabama, and Texas, but this will suffice for the most
credulous.
During the present fall this Plow has taken pre
