Ayer’s Cathartic Pills,
purposes of a Laxative
Perhaps no one medi
cine is so universally re
quired by everybody as
a cathartic, nor was ever
any before so universal.
Iv adopted into use, in
cVerv country and among
all clacses, as this mild
but efficient purgative
jPill. The obvious rea
son is, that it is a more re
liable and far more effec
tual remedy than any
other. Those who have
tried it, know that it cured them; those who luive
not, know that it cures their neighbors and friends,
and all know that what it does once it does always
—that it never fiiils through any fault or neglectof *.
its composition.- We have thousands upon thou
sands or certificates of their remarkable cures of tho
following complaints, but such cures ore known in
ever}- neighborhood, and we need not publish them.
Adapted to all ages and conditions in all climates;
containing neither calomel or any deleterious drug,
they may be taken with safety by anybody. Their
sugar coating preserves them ever testa and make3
them pleasant to take, while being purely vegetable
no harm can arise from their nse m any quantity.
They operate by their powerful influence on tho
internal viscera to parity the blood and stimninto it
into healthy action—remove the obstructions of tho
stomach, bowels, liver, and other organs of tho
body, restoring their irregular action to health, and
by correcting, wherever they exist, such derange
ments as are the first origin of disease.
Minute directions are given in the wrapper on
the box, for the following complaints, which these
JPiffs rapidly cure:—
For Ilyqiriuia or Indigestion, Xdstless.
oru, languor and Zion* of Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to stimulate tho stom
ach and restore its healthy tone and action.
For X.iver Complaint and its various symp
toms, Rilious Headache, Kick Headache,
Jaundice or Green Sickness, Biliooa
Colic and Bilions Keren, they should be ju
diciously taken for each case, to correct the diseased
action or remove the obstructions which cause it.
For Dysentery or Diarrhoea, but one mild
dose is generally required.
For Dheumatisni,Gont, Gravel, Palpi*
tation of tho Heart, Pain in the Side,
Duck and I,olns, they shonld be continuously
taken, as required, to change the diseased action of
the system. With such change those complaints
disappear.
For Dropsy and Dropsical Swellings they
shonld be taken in largo and frequent doses to pro
duce the elect ofa drastic purge.
For Suppression a large dose should be taken
as it produces the desired effect by sympathy.
As a pinner Pill, take one or two Pills to pro
mote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, restores the appetite,
and invigorates the system. Hence it is often ad-
vnntagcous whero no serious derangement exists.
One who feels tolerably well, oiten finds that a dose
of these Pills makes him feel decidedly better, from
their cleansing and renovating effect on the diges
tive apparatus.

and all went merry as a marriage bell. Two
or three clcxks that were reading the news
papers looked at me rather hard, but went on
reading, and nobody said anything. How
ever, 1 had been nsed to this land of alacrity
from Fourth-Assistant-Junior Clerks all
through my eventful career, from the. very
day 1 entered the office of the Corn-Beef
Bureau-clear till l passed out of the last one
in the Dead Reckoning Division. I had got
so accomplished by this time that I could stand
on one foot from the moment I entered an
office till a clerk spoke to me, without chang
ing more than two, or may be three times.
So I stood there till I had changed four
different times. Then I said to one of the
clerks who was reading:
“Illustrious Vagrant, where is the Grand
Turk?”
“What do you. mean, sir? whom do you
mean? If you mean the Chief of theBureau,
he is out”
“Will he visit the harem to-day?”
The young man glared upon me awhile, and
then went on reading his paper. But I knew
the ways of these clerks. I knew I was safe
if ho got through before another New York
mail arrived. He only had two more papers
left After a while he finished them, and
then lie yawned, and asked mo what I wanted.
“Renowned and honored Imbecile. On or
about—”
“You are the beef contract man. Give me
your papers."
He took them, and for a long time he ran
sacked his odds and ends. Finally he found
the Northwest Passage, as I regaided it—he
found the long-lost record of the beef con
tract—he found the rock upon which so many
of my ancestors had split before they ever got
to it. I was deeply moved. And yet I re-
oiced—for I had survived. I said with emo
tion, “Give it me; the government will settle
now.” He waved me back, and said there
was something yet to be done first.
“Where is this John Wilson Mackenzie?"
said he.
“Dead.”
“Whendid he die?”
“He didn’t die at all—he was fciiied.”
“How?”
“Tomahawked.’’
“Who tomahawked him?
“Why, an Indian, of course. You didn’t
suppose it was a superintendent of a Sunday
school, did you?’'
“No. An Indian, was it ?”
“The same.”
“Name of the Indian?”
“His name! I don’t know his name.”
“Must have his name. Who saw the tom
ahawking done?”
“I don't know.”
“You were not present yourself then ?’’
“Which you can see by my hair. I was ab
sent”
“Then how do you know that Mackenzie is
dead?”
“Because he certainly died at that time, and
I have every reason to believe that he has
been dead ever since. I know he has, in
fact.”
“We must have proofs. Have you got the
Indian?”
“Of course not.”
Well, you must get him. Have you got the
tomahawk?”
“I never thought of such a thing.”
“You must get the tomahawk. You must
produce the Indian and the tomahawk. If
Mackenzie’s death can be proven by these,
you can then go before the commissioner ap
pointed to audit claims, with some show of
getting your bill under 6uch headway that
your children may possibly live to receive the
money and enjoy it But that man’s death
must be proven. However, I may as well tell
you that the government will never pay that
transportation and those travei'ng expenses of
the lamented Mackenzie. It may possibly pay
for the barrel of beef that Sherman’s soldiers
captured, if you can get a relief_bill through
Congress making an appropriation for that
purpose; but it will not pay for the twenty-
nine barrels the Indians ate.”
“Then there is only S100 due me, and that
isn’t certain! After all Mackenzie’8 travels in
Europe, Asia and Africa with that beef; after
all his trials and tribulations and transporta
tion ; after the slaughter of all tho«e innocents
that tried to collect that bill! Young man,
why djdn’t the First Comptroller of the Corn
Beef Division tell me this ?”
“He didn’t know anything about the gen-
uinnessofyour claim.”
“Why didn’t the Second tell me? why didn’t
the Third? why didn’t all those divisions and
departments tell me ?”
“None of them knew. We do things by
routine here- You have followed the routine
and found out what you wanted to know. It
is the best way. It is the only way. It is
very regular, and very slow,-but it is very cer
tain.”
“Yes certain death. It has been to the
most of our tribe. I begin to feel that I, too,
am called. Young man, you love the young
creature yonder with the gentle blue eyes and
the steel pens behind her ears—I see it in your
soft glances that you wish to many her—but
you are poor. Here, hold out your hand—
here is the beef contract; go, take her and be
happy 1 Heaven bless you, my children! ’ ’
This is all that I know about the great beef
contract, that has created so much talk m the
community. The clerk to whom I bequeathed
it died. 1 know nothing further about the
contract or any one connected with it. I only
know that if a man lives long enough, he can
trace a thing through the Circumlocution
Office of Washington, and find out, after much
labor and trouble and delay, that which he
could have found out on the first day, if the
business of the Circumlocution Office were as
ingeniously systematized as it would be if it
were a great private mercantile institution,
A Day on Beaver Creek.
“Flint River” sends ns a lively account of the
May Festival of the Sunday Schools at Beaver
Creek on the Southwestern railroad, on Wednts
day, the Itth instant. He says:
About 11 o’clock the Fort Valley school came
in behind tho regular passenger train. The
schools in attendance were Butler school, Rey
nolds school, Tomlin school, Pleasant Vale
school, and iho Fort Valley Bchool. We had a
few brief Introductory remarks at the beginning
of the day’s exercises, by Rev. B. L. ltosa, of
Fort Valley, and next, we had a beautiful and
appropriate song from the Butler Sunday
school—
“Away to tho woods, away.
It suited the occasion admirably. Next was an
eloquent declamation delivered by Rev, J.
Blakely Smith, of Macon. He urged the im
portance of Sunday Schools in our country. His
ideas were good in regard to Sabbath bchool
teachers. We should have Christian teachers
instead of worldly ones. The minds of the
young must be cultivated. X will dwell more on
this in the conclusion. The next we had was a
pretty song from the Pleasant Vale Sunday
School,
“I am waiting by the river.
Captain Carson was called on for a speech,
but declined, I presume, because it was very
unexpected. The next on the docket was a
sweet little song, sung by Tomlin Sunday
School—the name of the song slipped my mem
ory. The next was a speech from B. L. Boss,
which waB to the point. Also an eloquent ora
tion delivered by Rev. Mr. Jewett. Then we
had a spicy little speech from CoL W. d. Wal
lace, of Butler, on the importance of Sunday
Schools, and also showing how a man can make
himself useful—to himself, his children, his
family aud thoir children, in this great and
good work. CoL W. is a live man in the cause.
Our correspondent dwells felicitously on the
beanty of the belles—the gallantry of the beaux—
the hospitality of the poople, the plenteousness
of the feast and the liberality of the Southwest
ern railroad in furnishing gratuitous convey
ance. But we are puzzled for room to-day, and
must content ourselves with the main facts in
the case.
