Beside the church door, a-ureaiy and I one.
A blind noman s it on the cold door et-us |
The wind wae hi'ter. the enow fe I f ist,
And a mocku-g voiic iu th - firm! blast
Seemed ever to echo her moaning cry.
As she legged her aims of the pa-scie-byi
"’Have pity on me. have pity, pray.
My back is bent, and my hair ia gray-”
The bells were rii gicg the hour of prayer,
And mai.y good people were gathered iht-ro,
Bat cove.ed with fu;8 and man 1-s waim.
They hurried past through tho wintiy storm. ' •
Some were hoping their soul.* to save.
And ome were thinking of death *ud the grave,
Aud, alas 1 thi-y hail no t me to heed
Thy pour soul asking fur chanty’s mee!.
And some were blooming with beauty’s grace.
Hut, closely mufflid iu veils of ace.
They saw not the sorrow, nor In art not the moan,
Or her who ait on the cold door atone.
At last came one of a noble name.
By the aty c-nuted tha wealiln-st dame.
And ttm pearls that o’er her neck were sti nug
Sbo proudly ihero to tho b< ggar flung.
Then followi d a maidtn young and fair.
Ado ned with clusters of golden hair;
But her diess was thm, ami scanty, and worn,
Not even the he gar's seemed more forlorn.
With a tearful look and a pi'ying sigh.
She whispered eoft "’No js*ev have I—
Bat I give yon my prayers, g-od friend. * ea d ebe,
“And surely I know GodlistOos to me."
<>n the poor white hat.d. eo sunken and small.
The blind woman frit a tear-diop fall,
Then kiraeri it ami said to the vu epu.g gtil,
"It is you who have given ihe sweetest peail.”
