Londox, September 10.—Th* Major of
Manchester has received a teleKram from
the British Consul at New Orleans, ash
ing help for the fever sufferers. Tno
Major publishes an announcement that
ho will be glad to co-operate with any
merchants or citizens desirous of taking
steps for the relief of the sufferers, and
that he will remit to New O leans any
funds subscribed.
Bkblix, September 10.—In the speech
from the throne, which was read by Count
Stolbarg Wernigrede, at the opening of
the Reichstag yesterday, it mi said: Im
mediately alter the first attempt upon
the Emperor’s life, the Government be
came convinced that the crime was due
to the influence of sentiments propagated
far and wide by an agitation which aimed
at undermining the existing lawB of the
State and of society.”
The speech, after referring to the re
jection of the first bill brought forward
in the Reichstag for the arrest of machina
tions which imperilled the edmmon in
terests of the country, says: "The Fed
eral Government thinks now, as formerly,
that extraordinary measures are required
to prevent the farther extension of an al
ready widespread evil, and to pave
the way for its extinction, and that
each measures should preserve the liberty
of citizens in general, and only prevent
an abase of liberty by which pernicioas
socialist agitation threatens the founda
tions of life and onltare.”
The speech expresses a confident hope
that the depnties will not refnee the
means of giving the Empire the same se
curity from Internal as it already enjoys
from external attaok.
Iioxoox, September 10.—A. Berlin dis
patch says the Liberals are not pleased
with the speech from the throne, which
they regard as partly an indioiment against
themselves.
Londox, September 10.—Over 600
bodies have been reoovered of persona
drowned by tbe disaster to the oteauwhip
Princess Alios. A large majority of the
bodies have been recognized. Eighty-
three conld not be identified and were
buried at Woolwich yesterday.
Bamoob, September 10.—Returns from
228 towns give Connor, the Republican
candidate for Governor, 41,081 voter;
Smith, Greenbacker, 23.322; Garcelon,
Democrat, 19,612. Connor lacks 5.253
of a majority in these towns, while last
year his majority was 5,193. Returns of
the Congressional vote in thirty towns of
this (4th) district give Powers. Republi
can, 4,617; Ladd, Greenbacker and Dem
ocrat, 5,962. Powers is 1,343 votes be
hind in these towns, where, at the lost
election, he was 632 ahead. The Whig
has returns of 41 Republicans, 26 Green-
backers and 7 Democrats elected to the
Legislature. Nine Greenbackers and
Democrats are reported elected in Penob-
scott county, where the entire fusion
county ticket is probably elected.
Bilfabt, Mb., September 10.—Thir
teen towns in Waldo coonty, inolnding
Belfast, give Mnrob, Greenback, for Con
gress, 1,148 plurality. Hie wholo plurality
in the oonnty will probably be 1,600.
Lxwibton, Mb., September 10.—An
drascoggiD, complete gives Connor 3,814,
Gracelon 2,123, Smith 2,132. For Con
gress, Frye 3,888,Belcher 1,113, Chase
3,114. The Republican Senators and
county tioket were elected by 800 to 1.500
plcrslity. The representatives to tho
Legislature are eix Republicans and
three combination—Republican loss of
three. Frye has nearly 3,000 plurality
over Solon Chaie In this distrust. Nearly
half tbe Democrats voted for Cbaee.
New Oblbans, September 10.—A spe
cial to the Galveston News, dated Austin
9lh Instant, says Sheriff Kerber. of El
Paoo, renorts to tbe Adjutant General
that bis deputy arrested on th9 23th ulti
mo, Antonio Alizues, a fugitive from the
penitentiary, and also under indictment
for the murder of Jndge Howard and
othere, and pnt him in San Elizario jail.
Oa the same night Mexioans crossed the
river and resoaed the prisoner.

St. Loot-, September 10.—Wfaile the

to this city from Sr. Charles, on Sunday
afternoon, she struck a snag about a mile
from the mouth of the Missouri river and
sank. Louis Wilkinson, colored, Charles
Everett and a man named Dnnlap, all
members of the crew, are euppoied to be
drowned. The boat and cargo are a total
less.
Grenada, Miss., September 10.—The
yellow fever has broken cat at Senstcbia,
Mississippi. There have been over thirty
cases np to da to. The alarm among the
citizens is great.
Philadelphia, September 10.—Sam
uel J. Randall has been renominated in
the Third district.
Vicksbubo, September 10.—The indi
cations are that the fever is decreasing in
new cases, bat the mortality is fearful,
the deaths yesterday numbering 46 and
to-day 44. Among tbe deaths to-day are
Cash Martin, Keary, County Treasurer,
and J. W. Alvie, of Chattanooga, tele
graph operator, who came here three
weeks ago. Bishop Elder’s condition is
more favorablo to-day. Drs. Robbins and
Balfour are out again. Dr. O’Leary is
sitting np.
Canton, September 10.— The total
number of cases to date are 243; deaths
33; new cases in the last 24 hours 35, and
one death. The number of cases is in
creasing daily.
New Oblbans, September 10.—Two
hundred and thirty new cases and eighty
deaths to-day.
Portland, September 10.—By the
present showing Hale must be defeated.
The Senate appears to stand twenty Re
publicans to eleven Greenbackers and
Democrats, no straight Democrats.
There are rot yet enongh retains in to
prononnae upon the complexion of the
House.

of the city and oonnty are to-day giving
a picnic for tbo benefit of the xello w fever
sufferers.. Ic is being conducted on a
grand scale. All tbe artiole3 and pro
visions used have been contributed, and
the sale is immense. The proceeds will
he several thousand dollars.
Sr. Louis, September 10.—Among the
recent notable contributions to the yel
low fever fand here was a bale of cotton
donated by tbe citizens of LaGrange,
Tennessee, which was sent here for sale,
and auctioned off. It was purchased by
fonr members of tho Gotten Exchange,
and by them redonated and sold again,
this time to Mr. Barnes, of Barnes, Da
vis & Co., of Liverpool, whither it will
be taken by tho purchaser, and sold for
the earns good cause. It has already
added eight hundred and soventy dollars
to the fund.
Memphis, September 10.—At an early
hoar this morning rain commenced fall
ing, and has kept np incessantly np to
noon. Fifty-nine deaths have been re
ported np to noon, making 115 since
yesterday noon. Among them are Mrs.
Fannie Mathews, General C. W. Adams,
J. B. Farr, Wm. Chandler, John J. Cor-
nelly, telegraph operator; George Lane,
employee of the Southern Express Com
pany; Fred S. 8chafer, city tax collector;
the father of O. H. P.Pirer; Mrs. M. J.
Gleason, Mrs. S. M. Gales, J M. Herr
and Charles M. Smith, printers. Among
those in a critical condition is J. J. Sulli
van of Flaherty & Snliivan.
Lewiston, Mb., September 10.—This
Congressional District elects twenty Re
publicans, five Coalitions, one eonnd

Portland. September 10.—The repre
sentatives known to bo elected are thu3
far fifty Republicans, thirty-nine Green-
backeis, eighteen Democrats, not report-
64 thirty-six. Of these, nineteen are
known to be Democrats or Greenbackers.
If all tbe rest are Republicans they will
elill lack one of a majority, while it ie
apparent that the Graenbackers and
Democrats will control the House. The
result of the seventeen unknown repre
sentatives will be required to settle who
controls the joint ballot, which is the
most important, as that elects the State
officials. . . . _
Boston, September 10.—The last day
of the Beacon Club meeting w»s attended
by a large crowd. The first race, a sell

handicap hurdle for a puree of $400, di

There were eight entries, but Durango
failed to put in an appearance. Three
heats were run, the last being one of the
meat exciting ever witnessed ia Boston.
The race was won by Wild Oats, Sbylock
second. Sbjloek was the favorite daring
the race and won the first heat. Wild
Oats winning the second and third. Time
of first heat 1:52$. The second heat
ended with Wild Oats first, Dalgaeian
second, Sbylock third. Time 1:51$. Tbe
third heat was between Sbylock and Wild
Oats. Tho heat wa3 Very close. Wild
Oats passing in winner in 1:52$.

Concord, September 10.—Among the
resolutions ef the New Hampshire Re
publican convention was one tendering
heartfelt sympathy to the fever strick
en people of the South.
San Fpakoisco, September 10.—Boxes
and seat? in the California Theater were
auctioned off thia afternoon for the ben
efit of the yellow fever enfferere. About
one thousand dollars were realized in pre
miums. Mesdames Oakes, Scott-Siddons,
Judah and Caltrelle end Messrs. Robson
and Crano officiated as anctioners.
Five thousand dollars have been re
ceived from the children of tbe public
echools.
Tne Citizens’ Relief Committee to-day
forwarded two thousand dollars to the
Howards of Now Orleans, fifteen hnndred
to Memphis, and fifteen hundred to
Vicksburg.

crats of the Seventh District nominated
O’Brien J. Atkineoo.
Madison, September 10.—The Presi
dent was heartily received at the fair
grounds and made a speech on the finan
cial situation similar to those hereto
fore made in his Western trip. He
said: "With an improved condition of
the currency end the foreign trade we
may sorely predict that we are about to
welcome better times, bat we may not
forget that tbe enrest foundation of a re
stored financial prosperity is a sound con
stitutional currency and the national
credit untarnished.”
Vienna, September 10.—The thirty-
sixth Anstrain division on Sunday cap
tured Klijuc, on the river Sanna, after a
s ubborn engagement. They loit 260
men billed and wounded.

Pari3, September 10.—The Le Temps
states that the authorities have docu
ments proving the existence of sn inter
national propaganda and they intend to
prosecute tho persons arrested at the re
cent socialist congress for connection
therewith.
Memphis, Septemper 11.—The folio*
ing is the report for yesterday:
To the President of the Howard Associa
tion : The number of new cates cf yellow
fever since the last repoit is 151. My
appeal for covered vehicles for onr volun
teer medical cops has notmet with a sin
gle response. I have supplied them with
rubber coats to protect them from the
storm that has oontinned daring the en
tire day. It was the best I oonld do.
New calls for help have bad to go un
heeded. I am distressed to report that of
our volunteer medical corps stricken down
with fever there are Doctors McOormiok,
Green, Hunter, Harlan, Nnttall, Dawson,
Bankson, McGregor and Nugent. At this
rata it will not bo long nntil all the living
will be converted into a burial corps.

Father William Walsh, reported dead, is
alive and doing service.
County undertakers Holst Bros., and
Flaherty and Snliivan, report ninety-nine
deaths for the twenty-fonr hours ending
at six p. m. Tuesday. One undertaker
failed to report. Of these ninety-nine
deaths, thirty are colored.
There is continued difficulty in get
ting the dead buried. Among the dead
are Dr. Venable, Ben Coleman, J. J.
Snliivan, of Flaheity & Snliivan, under
takers. Hngh Torrence, an old citizen,
ho possessed considerable property,
died yesterday. O wing to the absonce of
friends, he was about to bo baried in Pot-
tor's Field when a member of the How
ards interfered and had him interred in
Elmwood. It is difficult to arrive at the
number of new cases, as few physicians
have time to report. Among those down
are Jesse W. Page, P. W. Seller and E.
W. Foster, members of the Howard As*
eociatiou.
B. W. Avenfc, Jr., Jos. Specht, General
Luke E. Wright, and Major William
Willis, of the citizens’ relief committee,
are prostrated, bat have not got the fe
ver.
Portland, Mb., September 11.—The
House now staid] [63 Republicans, 21
Democrats, 43 Greenbackers, with 14 dis
tricts to hear from, being one opposition
majority. Frandis alleged in waidfour
of Portland. The aldermen will hear tbo
caao, and it may change fonr Damoorat-
io representatives to Republican, and that
