seven new cases, and the Young Men’s
Christian Association one hundred and

Louisville, September 27.—Raiorts
which may be published to-morrow to
the effect that original yellow fever ex
ists in Lonisville, are untruo. There is
so desire to conceal the truth, and the
outside world can rest assured that the
moment original fever does exist, these
dispatches will annonnco the fact. Lou
isville has opened her gates to the suffer
ing South, and bid her refngees welcome.
Fever is not feared. There is none, and
by reason of her geographical position
and climatic influences it is confidently
believed that the fever cannot prevail
this city.
Thero has been a disposition on the
part of other cities to have the fever here
whether or no; and the reports that peo
ple are leaving Louisville in largenum'
bers are sensational.
London, September 27.—A Paris die.
patch announces that a charity fete ii

hon, for the benefit of the fever stricken
people iu the United States.
A Vienna dispatch states that Count

Liverpool. September 27.—This week’s
circnlar of the Liverpool Cotton Brokers’
Association says: "Cotton was in mod
erate demand, with a free 6npply. Quo
tations of most descriptions were rednoed.
American was doll and inanimate, and
the demand was freely met at a decline
of one-eighth pence. Sea Island was
freely offered, and in some instances
mnch lower. Fatnres were more freely
offered with a very limited demand, pri
ces having declined from 1-16 to 3-32
pence.
Tho leading grain circular says that
the grain trade at the British markets
has been dull daring the week. Wheat
had generally declined, especially new
English, which, in most cases, is so de
fective as to render its sale difficult.
Finer qualities of red American are
steadier, and generally held for previous
rates. The continental demand continues
for cargoes off the coast. At this market
to-day there was a moderate attendance.
Red wheat is in good demand, and, owing
to the scarcity, advanced 2d. Other de
scriptions unaltered. Flonr steady. A
fair business in corn, at yeBterday’a cur
rencies.
Louisville, September 27.—The Board
of Health to-day iaaued notice to the peo
ple of the United States that rnmors in
their nature highly exciting and preju
dicial to our city having been spread over
the country as to yellow fever being epi
demic here, they deem it their daty to
announce in the most emphatio manner
that each statements are false and un
christian attempts to injnre, commercial
ly, a people who have tried to do their
full daty to our suffering Southern breth
ren, and affirm sacredly that while there
may have been several instances of
yellow fever of an indigenous character,
even upon this there has been great
diversity of opinion among our most
nrominent and able physicians, nor has
there been anew case since Monday last.
We have already had several froets, and
with tho city in never ao exceptionally
healthy condition, have no hesitation in
assuring friends who may be absent, and
the people and country a* large, that
there has not been nor is thero now an
epidemic of any character whatever.

Yf.LLOW FEVER.
Ignorance of its Principal Dan-
Perhaps it might be thought invidious and
ungenerous to animadvert on a practice that
men risk their lives in carrying out, hut if they
lie really wrong the soorn r it is known the bet
ter for tnemselves, and I a.k in all candor in
view of present results if it is not time to make a
chan.o and try some other way. Fighting the
fever in Ihe yellow scourge has been the prevail
ing practice, and the results have been of tbe
moit harrowing description, helping the fever
and forwarding it instead, is now urged under
the conviction that if faithfully carried out a
yast improvement iu tho death rate would im
mediately result.
Those wbo consider fever the diseaso and
therefore fight it. take a very narrow view of tho
situation, because no fever can exist without an
obstructing cau*e, there can be no acceleration
of the heart’s aetion while tho blood flows
freely into all its channels, but tho
moment anything interferes to prevent it, the
area of circulation is lessened, tho blood is ob
liged to move quicker to get through, and if the
interfering cause bo extensive the circulation
must be rapid in proportion. Tho rapidity of
tho pulso is due to mechanical causes that nar
row tho circulating limits, and as thoso are clear
ed away tho area is again enlarged till finally
when no obstacle remains the heart resumes its
regular beat and unless interfere 1 with again
fever becomes impossible. The force exerted by
the blood in this compressed state must be con
siderable and is spent in tho clearanceof the cap
illaries. perspirat ion is mad o to fio w.the obstruct
ing causes aro flooded out, tbe channels are left
clear, tho fever cooled as if by magio in tho midst
of heat, subsides, and al) is calm again. Does
any sane man see in this* reason why fever
should be fought f o r would ho not rather insist
on the removal of tho interfering causes, tho
In this connection it should be borne in mind
that no man ever died of fever, that is tho reac-
tive effort of the svstem and so long as reaction
can bo excited there i* hope, but when no more
fever can bo looked for, with tho cbannols still
clogted. hope dies, and life is soon eitinct. If
doctors really could do what they aim at in every
case, when they fight the fever and treat it as
the foe of life, no man could survive the attack,
but fortunately thoy olten fail, nature is too
strong tor them and clears out the obstruction
ardtheir poisons too, but strange to tell they
take to themselves tho credit of the cure, and the
nearer they have brought the patient to tho door
of death, the greater is their claim for wondrous
skill and they generally havo their claims al
lowed, so literally is it true that it is easier to
cheat a man out of his life than out of a dollar.
The whole anti-philogistic system of practice's
founded m its opposition to and war on fever and
iuflamation, but I am glad to see that men of
prominence and oitensivo cxp-.rience aro being
driven from it into on inteligible treatment of
that dread disease in defiance of tho dogmas of
the schools.
Prominent among theso is the famous Dr.
Blackburn, of Kentucky, now a candidate 'or its
Govemorehip, who has passed through fifteen
yellow fever campaigns in forty years, in which
he has tested every kind of treatment and at last
adoDts Thom-ouism, pure and simple, and beats
old Samuel in his own domain. Warm foot
baths in bed, sweating teas plentifully, and am
ple cover, which instead of being oppressive, as
many would think is grateful, ho says, to tho pa
tient, even when the perspiration is made to rol
in great globules for from twenty to ninety hour
at a time 1 This has tho ring ol common ions
about it, for every fever ends in perspiration
that is the purpose of it, and the sooner that is
produced and the more freely it flows the
sooner is tho cure established; but what an idea
it gives cf the extent and character of those ob
structions that the malarial or yellow fever
poison is capable of so suddenly produ
cing! Tho collapse of tho capillaries must be
very extensive when it takes ninety hours of such
a flow to clear the channels again. In the pres
enco of a successful treatment that looks almost
like fighting fire, with a purpose precisely such
as nature aims at, what are the delicato trifling
miserable attempts at refrigeration, narcotiza
tion depletion and sedation worth that we have
cause to fear form the staplo of the usual treat
ment eepeeially as bleeding is olHciilly rec
ommended in New Orleans as part of tho
process. I can hardly trust myself lo speak of
theirefforts to arrest the action ol the heart and
reduce the heat without which no for- r could bo
cffectivo, or their Insane attempts upon tho liver
when I know them ignorant of its real functions,
sol let that pus hoping that in fu nro years
shoull the occasion call lor it, a much clearer in
sight will bo theirs of tho true conditions.
But there is another (object of most serious
imnort that nobody seems to consider, but which
I Tegoid theveryesjenceof the danger, and that
is the rapid tendoncy to disintegration of tho
blood. Thus we scothat while tho peripheral
capillaries aro cleared by perspiration and tho
case is to all appearance cured, the hidden dan-
gor against which nothing has been attempted is
ready to be rei ealed and tho doctor, the patient
and nis friends are startled by black vomit and
allthe symptomsof approaching death. Even
Dr Blackburn attributes this to inflammation of
the stomach but it is a mistaken idea for it pro
ceeds from tho disintegration of the blood itself
wrich can no longer bo held within its vessels
but passes from them by oxosmasis in to the
bodily cavities, and 19 precisely tho same in the
stomach as is found in thohesrt alter death.
The integrity and continuity of tho blood there
fore should bo a prominent object of tha physi
cians care, as Well as the clearance of all obstruc
tions from tho capillary tissaes, but thoso who
only think of how thoy can best fight tho fever
setmto take ro cognizance of anv of its sur-
roundings.
lhavetico ed a number ol severe yedow fever
