New Yook, October 1.—A New Orleans
special says the Acklen scandal commit
tee met yesterday afternoon in close ses
sion. Present, Judge Yoorhees, ex-Gov.
Penn, Major He&rsey, Duncan F. Ken
ner, Judge Heard, J. E. A. Gauthreaux.
O'Rourke, absent. Acklen made a pre
liminary speech, in which he said he
placed the entire case in the committee’s
hands, and wonld retire from the ticket
if they eaw fit so to advise him. He
claimed that the affair was one of una
dulterated blackmail, and submitted to
the committee affidavits in his possession.
He was greatly excited, and then with
drew.
The committee spent the entire time
in examining the evidence for tho de
fence. From tho testimony adduced
they are in favor of Acklen, as the alleg
ed crimes are too atroeions to be believed
by any one.
The papers belonging to Smith were
net placed in the committee’s hands until
just before the adjournment. They will
be reviewed to-morrow.
The girl’s mother was a daughter of
ex-Govemor Baker, of Louisiana. She
is implicated fearfully. J. B. A. Gau
threaux is the person sent by Acklen to
interview Smith, in the visit which di
rectly caused his death.
Additional facts have been brought to
light. During the girl’s illness her let
ter, bearing a check for fifty dollars, arri
ved from New York, enclosed in a letter
signed by a clergyman. A relative of
the girl wrote to tho minister to ascer
tain the reason for sending the check
The reply was that he (the clergyman)
had written no latter nor sent any money.
Further investigation revealed strong
evidence that Acklen had sent the
money and had need the clergyman’s
name, and that he had eent the girl reg
ular remittances since his departure for
the North.
The seduction took place in the fall of
1876. The child is now fire months old.
It i9 said Acklen lived with the girl ssven
months ago. Sho was nnder sixteen
when the alleged crime was perpetrated.
The feeling in the community is in
tense, and tho finding of the committee
is anxiously looked for.
Acklen certainly acts fairly and square
ly in the matter, and has given absolute
power to the committee.
For the past three days Acklen has
been visiting a colored woman named
Smith,on Common street, at whose house
the giil formerly lived. To-day he drove
there with a notary, and remained an
hour and a half.
At the meeting of the committee to
day, Smith’s papers will he read, and an
