Losdon, October 4.—The total liabili
ties of Smith, Fleming & Co., East India
merchants, aro estimated at over ten mill*
ions. The liabilities of their correspond
ing firms, which fail with them, Wm.

& Oo., of Kierrtohee, and doubtless con
eiderably less.
It is reported that a large ship building
firm in Glasgow has failed.
Whiting, Ala., October 4.—The block

two Bannermans taking the bat to the

Bannerroan was canght at wicket by
George Newhail, and retired without
scorisg—his place being taken by Horan.
Anson ia. Conn , October 4.—A negro
named Freeman kidnapped a seven year
old daughter of John McCrindle, before
daybreak yesterday, and taking her to a
barn, committed a horrible assault, after
which ho left her on the pnblio road. He
was subsequently arrested and a crowd
of fonr hundred assembled to lynch him
and nearly succeeded when he wa3 res
cued by a deputy sheriff. He is now
jailed at New Haven.
Tbot. N. Y., October 4—William,
alias “iluBh" Biley and John Fellows,
New York thieves, pleaded guilty in the
Court of Session to the §31,000 horse-car
robbery, committed here last July, have
been sentenced to fifteen years in
the State prison.
Portland, Ms., October 4.—United
States steamship Plymouth sailed this
afternoon for Santa Cruz, to protect
American citizens there.
Pittston, Pa., October 4.—The Dem
ocratic confreres of the Twelth distriet,
Luzerne and Lack&wana counties, to-day
nominated H. B. Wright, the labor re
form candidate.
Nsw Orleans, October 4 —A. W. Dan-
nett, telegraph operator cf Vicksburg, L.
M. Pennington, telegraph train dispatch
er, at Water Valley, Mississippi, died this
morning of the fever. The telegrapher’s
aid committee of this city by request of
General Superintendent Van Horne, will
assist all sick telegraphers outside of
Memphis. This becomes naoe-sary owing
to the illness of the remaining members
of the committee. The reports at the
Board of Health offioe show that the fe
ver is increasing in the lower portion
of the third dlsiriot near the United States
barracks, slaughter house and along the
line of St. Bernard parish. The fever has
penetrated every portion of the seeond
district from the river to the woods and in
addition to the yellow fever, an extremely
severe type of malarial fever prevails,
lathe parish of St. Martin a severe type
of fever prevails among children. A spe
cial from Crystal Springs reports the
death of General T. M. Griffith, of the
U. S. A., and his daughter at Cayuga,
Mississippi.
Nkw Orleans, October 4.—To-day’s
reports show 64 deaths and 203 new
Memphis, October 4.—The weather
is turning quite warm again. There is
no decrease of new cases reported. The
Howard Association warns refugees fiom
returning before the epidemic is offi
cially declared over. The Volunteer
medical corps of the Howard physicians
organized last night under the name of
the Howard Medioal Society of Memphis,

Livkppool, October 4. — The week’s
circular of the Liverpool cotton brokers
saje, up to Tuesday the market was firm,
aad considerable business was done.
Prices for some descriptions were higher.
Since Tuesday the market has been quiet,
and a part of advanco has been tent.
American was in gcoi demand, and ad
vanced i pence up to Wednesday, when
holders offered freely, closing dull and ir
regular. Sea Inland was in fair request,
bul there were free sellers, and prices are
rather lower. Futures opened strong, and
advanced, to Monday noon t pence for
September, and September aud October
delivery, and 1-16 pence for all other po
sitions. Since then Ibe market has been
very dull, closing at 1-32 pence lower for
Ootober. and 3-33 pence for all other po
sitions than last Thursday’s prices.
London, October 4.—The Manchester
Guardian’s Vienna diepatch says the po
litical crisis is becoming more eerioue.
The members of tho two Cabinets only
consent to retain their portfolios ou con

Washington, Ootober 4.—Tho Presi
dent returned this morning. The Cabi
net to-day approved tho letter of Attor
ney General Davens, giving his opinion
that the Utah and Oregon Railroad Com
pany can pass through the Bannock In
dian reservaticn. No other business of
special importance was considered.
Dr. John B. Blake resigned his position
aa Secretary of the Washington Monu
ment Sooiety, though he retains his mem
bership.
The Po3t-offioe Department orders that
no fines be imposed npon mail contractors
or deductions from their pay, beoanse of
irregnlarityof mail servioo on account of
quarantine regulations.
The Secretary of the Interior has re
ceived a letter from tho Superintendent
of the Hot Spring?, Arkansas, in refer
ence to tho recent troubles at that place.
One of the springs has been long used
promiscuously, and without charge, by
bather?. Persons affected with loath
some diseases have availed themselves of
its privilege. As the spring is not far
from the other Hot Springs, and the
ground is porons, the Ssperintendent
thought it advisable to conduct the wa
ters of the spring to a more distant point,
where tho bathing of afflicted persons
would not be subject to tho same objec
tions. His attempt to carry out this plan
has been resisted by some of tho settlers,
who have hold meetings to protest.
Work upon tho new life saving stations
ou the coasts of Virginia and North
Carolina aro rapidly progressing. New
surf boats, baosers, running gear, eta,
will bo purchased, so as to put the sta
tions in excellent condition for winter
duty.
Ohetinnz, October 4.—Intelligence
received from Ogallalareports the Indians
crossing tho river this morning five milea
east of that station. Fifty citizens of
Ogallala are prepared to defend tho town
should it be attacked. Scouts are out in
all directions.
Denvhb, October 4.—Tho following
from Wallace. Kansas, referring to the
Indians which left their reservation
near Fort Reno, has been received: The
Indians crossed the Kansas Pacific on
Sunday going North. When about
twenty-five miles north of Buffalo Sta
tion they commenced killing the citizens.
Thus far seventeen dead bodies have been
found along Sappa creek. The Indians
do not go at ell ont of their way to kill
white people, but if they meet a white
man on horseback they kill him and
take the horse. They are now eighty or
one hundred miles north of the Kansas
Paoifio with tho troops pressing them
Pretty hard. Tbev have killed no women
nor children.
London, October 4—In reference to
the statement published yesterday in the
"oning Advertiser that the admiral of
the East Indian squadron had been or
dered to send a number cf vessels into
the Persian Gulf.
A dispatch from Constantinople to the
Reuters’ company says: “Mr. Lxyard,
British Ambassador at Constantinople, is
informed that the pirates have made their
appearance in the Persian Golf and the
Galf of Volo, and has asked permission
from the Porte to seed British men-ot
war to operate against them.
Kingston, Jamaica, via Havana, Oc
tober 4.—The insurgents in Santa Cruz
are burning estates. Frederiokstadt has
been rednoed to ashes, and several lead
ing planters have been murdered. - The
Governor has arrived from St. Thomas.
Only fifty soldiers are available. In an
engagement at the Ansshope estate the
negroes were ion ted, and two hundred of
them killed. -The town of Baesen Is
threatened, bnt is yet safe. English and
Frenoh frigates are daily expected to ar
rive.
New Yobe, October 4 —The walking
match between O’Leary and HngheB is
virtually over, though it is probable both
men will keep on walking till te-morrow
night. At noon O’Leary had scored 339
and Hughes 283 miles. Hughes has de
posed Joe Gos3 from his position as
trainer. His friends say they last night
discovered that Goss had made an ar
rangement with O’Leary, whereby if
Hughes should attempt to rnn to-day or
to-morrow, he would be so trained as to
fail. This morning Gcss came and tried
to enter Hughes’ house and start him on
the traok, but hi> friends interfered, and
sent for Mr. Gilmore, saying that they
wished to have Goss kept away from the
track, or they would withdraw Hughes
and claim a foul. O’Leary’s friends ridi
cule this statement.
Sidney, Nebraska, October 4.—Major
Thornburg’s command of about two hun
dred men left on a special train to-day
for Ogallala to endeavor to stop the hos
tile Cheyennes. They will be fonnd at
Juleaburg by Lieutenant Davis and his
command from the South Platte. The
Cheyenne prisoners numbering about 260
persons, including seventy-five warriors,
en route for the Indian Territory, who
were held at this place until the rene
gades had passed, were disarmed this
morning and are now in camp at the Sid
ney barracks, guarded by Captain Fitz
gerald’s company. The Indians at first
refused to surrender and trouble was an
ticipated, but when the troops surround
ed them, they gave up their rifleB and
ponies, submitting to overwhelming num
bers.
Washington, October 6.—The Govern
ment has official information of tho ex
istence of an insurrection at SantajCruz,
but the advices say nothing regarding
the number of lives supposed to be lost.
Santa Cruz is embraced ia the consular
district of Sr. Thomas, under the juris
diction or Colonel Y. Y. Smith. Accord
ing to the latest reports received at the
State Department here, the mob have
succeeded in capturing and destroying
the town of Frederickstalt. There is a
United States consular agent resident
there, and it is supposed his house has
been destroyed with the others.
All the help available has been sent from
St. Thomss, by the Danish authorities
there. No reason is known for the insnr-
reotion, as it Is supposed the Danish au
thorities have been very mild towards the
inhabitants. In addition to the Plymonth
sent this afternoon from Portland to the
protection of American citizens at Santa
Crcz the navy department has also or
dered a vessel from ths West India sta
tion the one nearest to the disturbed le
gion to hasten on the same mission.
London, October 4—The Times Berlin
dispatch says tho government will prob
ably adopt the anti-Socialisb bill as
passed, thiough the committee, as con
ferences on Wednesday night showed
that there is a fair prospect of an agree
ment ia the Reichstag on amendments
satisfactory to Prince Bismarck concern
ing the duration of the law and retroac
tion of the clause for the suppression cf
newspapers for articles printed before its
enactment.
A dispatch to the Times from Florence
says the population is excited because a
member of the International has been
killed in a duel by an officer of a Bersag-
lieri regiment stationed here.
Sckbrvillb, N. J., October 4.—Tho
Republicans of the Fourth district have
nominated ex-State Senator F. A. Potts,
Nashville, October 4.—The prospects
are txseedingly bright for a full and in
teresting meeting of the Nashville Blood
Horse Association, beginning on Mon
day, being the last running race meeting
of the Western Circnit this fall. The at
tendance of foreign stables and turfmen
will bo large.
There are no owes of yellow fever
in Nashville save two or three refugee
csnvalescents at the Infirixary outside
the city. Nashville was never a3 healthy
at any time as now. The weather is
cool and pleasant.
Oiwxoo, N. Y., October 4.—Tho Re
publicans nominated Joseph Mason, in
the 24th district.
New York, Ootober 4.—A lengthy ai-
gnment took place between the counsel
in the Yanderbilt will case to-day, as to
the admissibility of thetostlmony of Mrs.
Eleanor Fletcher Bishop, tending to prove
that the late Commodore was a believer
in spiritualism. The Surrogate decided
that evidence on thatqnestion was admis
sible. His decision is regarded as a strong
point in favor of the contestants who say
they have dezens of witnesses to prove
tho Commodore’s belief in spiritnalism.
The counsel will argue tbat the will was
made nnder undue influence through
spiritnalistio mediums.
Philadelphia, October 4.—The game
between the Australian and Philadelphia
elevens was resumed to-day with great
interest attending. The Australians
were at the bat, and when at five o’clock
an adjournment was taken until to-mor
row, had a score of one hundred ana fifty.
New York, October 4.—In the Fitzjohn
Porter case the Court took testimony of
several witnesses to-day, and afterwards
adjourned until Monday. No new im
portant testimony has been adduced.
Chattanooga, October 4.—In the lost
twenty-four hours no deaths have oc
curred, and sixteen new cases have been
reported, of which fourteen are colored.
The outlook is unfavorable. We have
warm days and cool nights.
Gretna, La., October 4.—Tho disease
is spreading with frightful rapidity. The
Episcopalian minister, a Catholic Priest,
one brother and two sisters of mercy are
■§ wn with tho fever.
New Orleans, October 4.—From va
rious points throughout the State there
come calls on the * Howards for nurses
and 'physicians.
Memphis, October 4.—Owing to sick
ness and death among the attaches of
the Bank of Commorce, that institution
closed its doors to-day. The Board of
Health reports twenty-two deaths in the
twenty-four hours ending at six o’clock
to-night; none occurring outside the
corporation line are reported by the un
dertakers. Hon. Carey ^oung, after
three weeks’ illness, is up again, assisting
and caring for the sick.
Paris, 0otober;4.—Le Temps makes an
appeal for tha sufferers by the fever in
New Orleans recalling the fact that Louis
iana sent large sums of money to France
in 1871,’72 and 75.
Constantinople, Ootober 4.—The gov
ernment have intelligence that Saad Det-
den Pasha on announcing that hehad re
ceived orders to .surrender Podgoritza to
tho Montenegrins was killed by tho Al
banian?, and 156 officers and men nnder
his command were massacred.
Vienna, October 4.—The following
official telegram has been received: Skea-
jevo, October 4.—The Austrians entered
Yisegrad this morning unopposed. The
insurgents evacuated their entrench
ments, abandoning tents, cannon and
ammunition. The Austrians entered
Gorszda yesterday unopposed and to-day
occupied Oajnica. The district of Focha
is cleared ot insurgents. Thus the whole
of Bosnia and Herzegovina is snbdued
and the country is in our hands.’’
Constantinople, Oct. 6. — The Porte
bus sent a circular to the powers request
ing them to compel Austria to conform to
tho declarations of her plenipotentiaries
at the ccngress and to stop the advance
and excesses of her troeps pending the
decisions of tho powers. Unless this is
done the circular says the Porte will con
sider Austria a violator of international
aw.
London, October 5.—A Berlin dispatch
siys Bismarck has had a conference with
the Crown Prince regarding the anti-
Socialists bill, which it is seriously feared
will fail, as a majority of Reichstag per
sistently refuse to yield on the question of |
limiting the duration of the law.
