Gold ale, of Atlantic, Iowa, retarned
home from the Black Hills yesterday and
was immediately arrested by a detective,
who was in watching, on a charge of par
ticipating in the stage robbing at Hot
Creek, Wyoming Territory, a few days
ago. A bar of gold, worth nearly five
thousand dollars, was feund In bis pos
session. The officers are confident of tteir
ability to establish his guilt. The uc-
cuaed was brought to Council Bluffs last
night anu lodged in jail to await trial.

Washington, October 15.—The Oc
tober returns to the Department of Agri
culture indicate an average condition in
the cotton crop of ninety—lame as in
September:
North Carolina 84, decline of 2; South
Carolina 84, increase of 4; Georgia 85,
increase of 4; Florida 84, decrease of 7;
Alabama 91, decline of 1; Mississippi 86,
decline of 3; Louisiana 83, unchanged;
Texas 103, increase of 2; Arkansas 90,
decline of 8; Tennessee 102, increase of 11.
Compared with October, 1877, the
growing crop shows an improvement of
11 per cent. The October condition fully
equals that of the splendid crop of 1870,
and excels any inteivening year. Insect
injuries are unimportant.
The eastern section of the cotton belt
was visited by storms moving through
narrow cones and doing much local dam
age. In the Mississippi Valley the yel
low fevor quaranuno regulations have re
stricted the marketing of tho crop.
Texas reports a very fine crop—some
counties reporting prospective averages
as high as a bale per acre.
Arkansas has fallen off through drought
in some quarters and excessive rains in
others. W ith the increased acreage plant
ed, the crop now promises an oat turn of
upwards of five million bales, of which
Texas will produce nearly one million.
Memphis, October 15.—The weather is
growing warmer, and reports are received
of the further spreading of the fever in
tho suburbs.
New Orleans, October 15 — Tbe
weather is clondy and warm. To-day’s
reports show 135 new cases and 30 deaths

New Yobk, October 15.—The number
of failures for the third quarter of 1878
were 2,853 as compared with 1,816 in the
same quarter last year. The liabilities
for tho last of the second quatter are
$60,000,000 as compared with $42,000,-
000 in the same period of 1877.
The trade of the country is believed to
have survived what threatened to be a se-
ricus shock to the confidence and credit
growing oat of circumstances attending
the repeal of the bankrupt law, and ex
cepting the unfortunate epidemic In the
South, the general conditions of trade aro
more healthy than at any time since the
year 1873.

New Yosk, October 15.—An elaborate
opinion was banded down this afternoon
by Judge Frccdbam, in the Superior
Court, cn a motion made by Mr. A.
Sullivan to amend, if necessary, the rec
ord of tho naturalization of certain citi
zens whose papers Mr. John J. Davenport
required to be surrendered as of no va
lidity. He denies the motion,holding that
tho records are completo in every respect,
and that there was no necessity far snch
amendment.
Tho Tammany Hall Connty Convention
met this afternoon and organized by the
election of Wm. R. R. Roberts chairman.
No nominations were made, but a com
mittee on resolutions was appointed to re
port to the adjonrned convention of the
party on Saturday next. . :

Burke, a stockholder in the Consolidated
Virginia Mine, b ought anit to recover
frem J. G. Flood, J. W. Mackey and O.
G. Fair, of the Pacific Mill and Mining
Company, twenty six million dollars, al
leged to have baen wrongfully diverted
from the stockholders of the Consolidated
Virginia by defendants in their manipu
lation of ores and the retention of the
tailings of the company
Detroit, October 15 —In the cricket
match to-day the Australians resumed
the bat and were put out with a total
score of 108 runs for their first innings.
The Peninsulars, in tbeir second inning,
had made 63, with the loss of fourteen
wickets. When the wickets fell for the
Peninsnliw, they had scored 81, which,
with their 34 in their first inning yester
day, gave them 115 against the Australi
ans’ 181 in one inning.
Richmind, October 15 —The Commis
sioners from the German Government to
examine into the working of the tobaooo
taxsystem arrived to-day, and will re-,
main several days making investigations.
Washington, October 15—Commodore
Shnfeldt has had several conferences with
Secretary Thompson regarding his propo
sition to examine into tho resonroes and
demands of the African trade. The Sec
retary has concluded to give him the
command of the Ticonderoga, with a
roving commission. He will also act as
an American arbiter in tbe Liberian
boundary commission.
Helena, Ark m October 15.—Four new
cases and three deaths for the 24 honrs
ending at noon. The people are lass ex
cited, but qre leaving in great numbers.
The Howards have all they need, money
excepted.
Chattanooga, October 15.—Among the
deaths are Mrs. Bettie Kauffman, Mattie
Price, C. H. Gledhill, and one colored.
There are twenty-four caeca, of which
twoaty-tbree are colored. The weather
is warm. Dr. J. C. 01 instead,of Atlanta,
was taken down with the fever yesterday.
Drs. Traer and Baxter are improving.
Two deaths occurred yesterday. Dr. Car
ter died to-day. Total number of deaths
to date are forty.
Clinton, La., October 15.—Since tbe
death of Rev. John A. Riley, six cases
have occurred on his place. Miss Annie
Riley died to-day, and Miss Mary Riley
is not expected to survive. There are
several new cases at Depne’s place.
New Orleans, October 15.—The
Knight Landing, near arrisbnrg, ap
peals to the Howards for physicians and
nurses. One of the physicians there is
dead and another eick. There are 12
oases and 5 deaths to date.
Morgan Crrr, October 15.—Oat of a
population of two thousand the total
number of cases are 400, and deaths 79.
Ocean Springs, October 15.—Seven
teen cases under treatment and are doing
well. The number of cases to-date are
125 and deaths 29

Canes, was reoeived at Paris which states
that aa arrangement between the Cretans
and Turkish authorities finally setting
the questions at iBsne has been signed
and sent to Constantinople for approval.
Vienna, October 15 —Tho Emperor
has entrnsted to Baron Van Pretia Cog-
noda the formation of a New Austrian
Cisleitban Cabinet. Its definite formation
however, is not expected before the
meeting of Reicharath Tuesday next. The
Austrian reply to the Turkish circular was
dispatched Monday.
New York, October 16. — At the
monthly meeting of the anthracite oosl
producers to-day all the interests were
represented, and It was resolved to limit
the production 6f November to 1,800,C90
tons, an increase of fifty per cont, over
last month.
Berlin, October 16.—The Reichstag
passed tbe paragraph of the Sooialist bills,
relating t > a miditiud state of siege, with

cretion as to the propriety of proclaiming
a state of siege and expelling suspocted

completes tho second reading of the bill.
Cairo, October 16—There were two
yellow fever deaths and three new oases
here to-day.
Little Rook, October 16.—The opera
tor at Hopefieid reports two deaths to
day end four yesterday. Tho fever has
broken ont at Winterviile.
