limited liability of the cotton spinning
companies of Oldham & Ashton, acder
Lyne districts, publish very unfavorable
reports of the last quarter's basinets of
thirty companies. One company mil
pay a dividend of ' fonr and a half per
cent, per annum. Nine report very smal

dispatch to the Manchester Guardian
says Admiral Hornby, in despatch boat
Helicon, his gone to Cyprus to meet the
Lords of Admiralty. On his return the
fleet will anchor in the Gulf of lamed.
The intended withdrawal of the fleet
from the vicinity of Gallipoli has been
abandoned in consequence of the recent
movements of the Russians.

patoh says: “It is expected at the meet-
tog of tne Reiohsralh to-day that Baroo
Von Prelia Cognado will inform the
House that the resignation of the minis
try has been aooepted, and that he has
been ohargea with the formation of a new
Cabinet. Too House will then no doubt
adjourn and the real work of forming a
Cabinet will be taken In hand, as the in
tention seems to be to form, if passible,
a parliamentary Cabinet which may
reckon on the support of the majority.
New Oauxins, October 22.—Referring
to the reoent tronble there, a communi
cation from the Distriot Attorney of Ten-
bbs parish to Governor Niohole, states that
the eberiS’s posse of fifty men, going to
cxeonte a writ for the arrest iu Fail fax,
were fired upon by four hundred armed
negroes. Tne posse returned the fire,
killing and wounding eight nogroes and
dispersing the balance.
Washington, October 22 —Tbo Signal
Service Station at Barnegat, N. J., re
ports schooner Samuel Carter, loaded
with two fifty tons of railroad iron, bound
from New York to Philadelphia, is
aground inside of Barnegat inlet. The
crew of the Life Saving Station, No. 17,
are assisting her crew and she will prob
ably come off next high water.
Washington, Ootober 22—Informa
tion baa been reoeived at ths Mint Burean
that the reoent order for the parohaso of
gold bullion at Cbailatte, N.O., and Den
ver, Colorado, has proved a complete
Encoesi, the miners being very glad to
sell their bullion for its coin value in le
gal tenders, less the charges for melting,
assaying, etc.
San Fbsncucc, Ootober 22—The
Australian cricketers arrived here last
night, and will play here on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday.
Cincinnati, October 22.—At an early
hour this morningtho dwelling of Michael
Renter, on Price’s Hill, wa3 burned.
Renter, upon awakening, ran up stairs to
rescue hia little daughter. In doing so
he was obliged to pass through the flames.
He found the child with her night dress
burning, and grasping her in bis arms,
forced bis way back through the flimes,
and reached the ground safely. The
child is badly burned about the face and
arms. Renter is probably fatally injared,
both arms being burned almost to the
bon», and the flesh scorched off his back.
A train on toe Dayton and Michigan
Rulioid, yesterday, when approaching
Anna Station, ran into a wagon contain
ing a farmer named Robert Yoland, his
hired maD, named Hutchinson, and hia
family. The wagon was demolished,
Hutchinson thrown under the cars and an
arm and leg crushed, and receiving fatal
interna! injuries. Yel*nd was thrown
thirty feet into a field, and seriously in
jured.
Memphis, October 22.—It commenced
raimug lent night at ten o'clock and con-
tinned until five in the morning. The
weather is now dear, the thermometer in
dicating fifty-six degrees. From six last
night until noon to-day eleven orders for
interments are reported by the undertak
ers. Among the deaths sre Miss Del
Roach, James Roper, a well known Main
street grooer. Miss Charlotte Thorns?, F.
It. Dowdy, James Dolan, engineer of
county jails, S. B. Nichilsen and Fritz
Heilman. Five new oase9 and one death
are reported as occurring yesterday at
Tascnmbia, Alabama. The Charleston,
B. C., authorities have telegraphed that
their nurses can return home without be
ing subjected to quarantine detention.
The physioians who came from Cincinna
ti and Dayton leave for home to-morrow.
The Howard Association is rapidly send
ing off all the nnrses from abroad, (heir
services being considered no longer
needed. Bix names were sent this morn
ing to Somerville, Tennessee, one to Ross-
villr and one te Hernando, Miss.
New Oblbans, October 22. — The
weather this morning is clear, cool and
windy, with the thermometer at C5 de
gree?. One hundred and fourteen new
cases and forty-two deaths aro reported
for the past 24 hours.

cases and one death for the past 24
hours.
New York, Ootober 22 —The Southern
Relief Committee of the Chamber of
Commerce received to-day $296.88, being
the proceeds of an entertainment given
by tbesiloon passengers on the last
passage of the steamship Celtic. It was
transmitted through the agent of the
line. A contribution of five dollars from
the Sunday Mercury Sre correspondent in
aid of the wives of firemeninthe infected
districts. This makes the total receipts
to date $168,854.88. Late in the after-
neon a contribution of $74.47 was re
ceived from St. George’s Church, Astoria,
whiob will 8well the total etlll further. A
dispatch was received from the President
of the Young Men’s Christian Associa
tion at New Orleans, elating that with
the work on hand and before ns wo can
judiciously use what monoy you can
spore us. In response thereto the com
mittee directed the Secretary to remit to
to the Association two thousand dollars.
Chattanooga, October 22 —In the last
24 hoars 4 deaths 12 new cases have oc
curred, 12 of which are colored. Dre.
Fraer, Baxter, Knott and Blackford are
n.r. The colored peoplo continue to
crowd in when aDy of their color aro down
with the fever, and resist all efforts to
have them removed. The increased
number of new cases causes the returned
refugees to take the hick track.
Nxw Orleans, October 22. — Miss’
Mary Schoenberg, Superintendent of the
Jewish Widows and Orphans Home, died
of yellow fever tc-day.
Washington, October 22—Secretary
Sahrra will deliver a speech at Boston on
Monday evening. The speech will deal
especially with the question of money in
it- relations to the workingmen.
Semi official advices received here to
day from Mexico are to the effect that
the eoldiera of the ‘‘Division of the
North” have not been paid sinoe last
July, and consequently aro deserting into
Texas in great number?. The troops at

Philadelphia, October 22.—A new
iron war steamer, built for the Russian
Government, was launched from Cramp’s
shipyard to-day in the presence of the
entire Rassian legation and a multitude
of spectators. The religious ceremonies
of the Greek Church were performed on
board before the launch. The steamer
is built for speed and will probably bo
named America.

dent to-day signed the commission of
Greone C. Chandler as United States
Attorney for tha northern district of Mis

Toe President and Secretary Sherman
will visit Cumberland and the Mary
land fair on Thursday. Both will deliver
addresses.
The Cabinet held a two bour’d session
to-day, at which the. estimates of the
several departments for the next fiical
year were presented. They are reduced
to the lowest figures practicable iu view
of the falling off in revenues. The ag
gregate amount required will not vary
materially from the appropriations mads
for the present fiscal year, with the ex
ception of a defisiency m ths Post-Office
Department and increased expenditures
m the Iuaian Office.
Surgeon J. Winthrop Taylor is ap
pointed Surgeon General of the Navy,
Vice Sargeon Grier retired because, of
advanced age.
In the 8apreme Coart to-day the case
of the United States, plaintiff in error,
vs. F-usto Mors, was submitted by As
sistant Attorney General Smith for plain
tiff in error, and by F. R. Condert for the
defendant in error. This case involved
the question of the construction of act
of 1862 requiring a clearance bond in
cases where outgoing vessels were bound
for such a destination as Bbould cause
suspic.on that the cargoes were intended
for ports within tho Confederate line?,
whether in all cases the amount of the
bonds ebould cenform to one section of
law or fall within the discretion of the
custom officers, as provided in another
sectioo.
Baltimore, October 22—Nearly all the
principal turfmen of the oonntiy are pres
ent at the Pimlico races, which com
menced to-day. The track was in good
condition, and the attendance (Xiellent.
The first race was a dash of one mile for
maidens of all ages—twelve started.
The Dixie stakes was the second race
for three year olds, of two miles—$100
subscription. H. F. Club added fifteen
hundred, cf which one thousand went to
the first horse and fire hundred to the
second. The starters weres Charles
Reed’s Bonnie Wood, George Lonllard’s
Duke of Magenta, and P. Lorilltrd’s
Spartan.

The third race was a trial steeple chose
for horses that never won a steeple chose

The fearth race was a twe-mile heat for
all ages; maidens allowed, if three year?,

pounds; if five years aod upwards,
twelve pounds.

New York, Octobor 22.—The suspen
sion of the firm of Dodd, Brown & Co.,
of Sl Louis, was announced this morning
and created a profound sensation through
out the dry goods market in this city.
The firm is tho second largest jobbing
concer ■ in the Western States. Its ra
ting has been A1 as given by Messrs.
Dun, Barlow & Co., and by Brn&treet it
has been rated at from $400,000 to half
a million. Their liabilities are slightly
over $1,000,000, and more than half of
this amount is due to merchants in this
city.
Chicago, October 23.—A dispatch from
Omaha says detractive prairie fires are
raging near Kearney, along the line of the
Omaha and Republican Valley, in Polk
O-iunty, and other eectiona of Nebraska,
the northeast portion of the State suffer
ing most severely. The losses to proper
ty will be immense. Seven persons havo
been bnrned to death and a considerable
number of others eeverely injured. Par
ticulars cannot as yet be learned.
Cleveland, October 22.—In view of
tbo heavy tax imposed on banking capi
tal in this city the Merchant’s National
Bonk, at a meeting of tho stockholders
thin morning, reduoed its capital from
$1,200,000 to $803,000.
London, October 22 — Couper, Ssott &
Co., a Glasgow firm largely engaged in
Afrioan trade, has failed.
Vienna, October 22.—Th3 Austrian
Badget for 1879 estimates the deficit es
fifteen million three hundred and seventy-
seven thousand seven hundred and forty
florins, which t is proposed to cover
either by tbe issue of a gold rornt, or by
an addition to the-floating debt.
Richmond, Va., October 22.—The
caso on the motion for tho foreclosure of
the mortgage of tbe Atlantic, Mississippi
and Ohio Railroad by the English bond
holders came up in the United States
Circuit Court to-day, Judges Bond and
Hughes presiding. The decree applied
for b7 tho Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio
consolidated bondholders asks for the
sale of the whole line and its property as
an entirety, subject to tho liens of the
several dividend bondholders, and after
the payment of the receiver’s and other
outstanding indebtedness, tho balance of
the proceeds to be divided among . the
holders of tho Atlantic, Mississippi and
Ohio consolidated bonds. The Dutch
bondholders representing two millions of
dollar?, through their counsel oppose the
sale of the road, asking ta become parties
to the suit as defendants. Tnis latter
question occupied the attention of the
court all day. being argued at length,
and the case was continued till to-morrow.
The totxl amount or consolidated bonds
of the road secured by the mortgage un
der which the proceedings are now insti
tuted amount to *5.470,000. with interest
to October 1st, 1878, of $1,695,289.
