The Festive Tramps,

ceaselessly on. A gang, however, seem
to have taken a fanoy to oar oity, and
remained here for several daye.
Eirly yesterday morning and on thepre

descent on these pedestrians and succeed

city, where they make their headquarters.
Several were a-rested on the commons
below the city. Abcnt three o'clock yes
terday morning Lieutenant Hurley’s
squad was out on the war-path after
tramps. They bad captured three and
were taking them to the barracks, when,
in crossing a vacant lot in the rear of
Rock Mill, one of the captives suddenly
fell out of ranks and disappeared. A few
cries, followed by a splosh, soon showed
that ho had fallen into an old neglected

police. Two of them weie fined ten dol

and the six others ordered to leave the
city without delay, and they accordingly
left as soon ai dismissed from his Hon-

at the chain gang of the county, where
these two nnfortnnate pilgrims are now

CONSTIPATION.
Testimony of the Chief Justice of Georgia:
have used Simmons’ Liver Regulator for const!
pation of my bowels, caused by a temporary de
rangement of the liver, for the last three or four
years, and always when used according to the
directions, with decided benefit. I think it is a
good medicine for the derangement of the liver,
at least such has been my personal experience in
the nse of it. HIRAM WARNER,

The Sue will bo printed every day during the
year to come. Its purpose and method will be
tho same as in the past: To preseat all the news
in a readable shape, and to tell the truth though
the heavens fall.
The Sus has been. is. and will continue to be
independent of everybody and everything save
the Truth and its own convictions of fluty. That
is the only policy which an honest newspaper
need have. That is the policy which has won
for this newspaper the confidence and friend
ship of a wider constituency than was ever en
joyed by any American jonrnaL
The Sus is the newspaper of the people. It is
not for the rich man against the poop man, or
for the poor man against the rich man, bat it
seeks to do equal justice to all interests in the
community. It H cot the organ of any person,
class, sect or party. There need be no mystery
about its loves and bates.. t is for honestmau
against the rogues of every time. It is for the
honest Democrat as again -t the dishonest Re
publican, and for the honest Republican as
against the d ishonest Democrat- It does not take
its cue from the utterances of any politician or
political organization. It gives its support unre
servedly wheu men or measures are in a reement
with the Constitution aud with the principles
upon which this republic was sounded for the
»ople. Whenever the Constitution and consti-
utionsl principles are violated—as in the out
rageous conspiracy ol 1876, by which a man not
elected was placed iu the President’s office,
whore he still remains—it speaks out for the
‘ bt. That is the Su«’Sidea of independence,
this respect there will be no change in its pro-
gramme for 1879.
The *U!t has fairly earned the hearty hatred
of rascals, frauds and humbugs of all sorts and
sizes. It hopes to deserve that hatred not less in
theyearl8i9 than in 1878, 1877, or any year gone
by. The Sun is printed for the men and women
of to-eny, whose concern is chiefly with the
affairs ot to-da.v. It has both the disposition and
the ability to afford its readers the promptest,
fullest, and most accurate intelligence of what
ever in the wide world is worth attention. 'To
this end the resiurces belonging to well estab-
ished prosperity will be liberally employed.
Tho present disjointed condition of parties in
this country, ana the uncertainty of thefuture,
lend an extraordinary significance to the events
of the cot-ing year. To present with accuracy
aud clearness the exact situation in each of its
varying phases and to expound, according to ita
well-known m *thods, the pnnciplesthat should
guide ns through tbe labyrinth, will be an impor
tant part of the Sun’s work for 1879.
