Cases of the United States against a number of promi nent Virginians, known as the gold cases, have been set for trial in the United States Court to morro w. These are cases in whioh the Federal Government auea ex-Goveraor Wm. Smith and other exe cutive officials who were in authority at the time of the evacuation of Richmond in 18CS for fifty thouaacd dollars in gold, claimed by the United States as spoils of the war and said to have been appropri ated by the defendants. Cincinnati, April 11.—A dispatch from New Albany, Indiana, eays David Mauck, Wednesday night, murdered his wife by blows of a pole axe while she was asleep. Sarah Vaughan, living in the family, hearing the shrieks of Mrs. Mauck. rush ed into the room, whereupon Mauck struck her blows that will probably prove fatal. Ho then fled. A Urge party is pursuing him. Nbw Yobjc, April II.—Good Friday was appropriately observed. Business at the stock, produce and cotton ex changes wss entirely suspended. Auausxa, April 11.—Henry McSeed and Thomas Satterwhite, both colored, will bo banged at AppliDg, Colombia county, Georgia, on the 9th cf May, the former for the murder of his son and the latter for Wife-murder. Washington April 11.—The Senate se lect committee, appointed to investigate and report the best means of preventing the introduction and spread of epidemic diseases, met to-day for the purpose of considering an elaborate bill waich is the ; ioint work of their chairman. Senator Harris, and the recently created national board of Health, and embodies the con clusions reached by the board in its ses sions last week. The bill thus prepared adopted and will berecommended for enactment without material changes. It provides that every vessel bound for the United States shall obtain properly an- thenticated.'certificates of Sanitary con dition and history of vessel, cargo, pas sengers and orew. It provides for the establishment of suitable quarantining regulations, and for tho ereotton of-a building for defection purposes, for the designation of proper officials to carry onttbe provisions of the health laws and it applies penalties for a disregard thereof. It directs the National Board of Health to cause a thorough inspeotion to be made of all animals arriving at or exported from tho different shipping ports of the United States, and lo oause owners or shippers to be promptly notified of the result of such Inspection, with such re commendations as may be proper in eaeh case. Similar notifications are to be made to the State and local authorities. Toe bill finally proposes to appropriate $650,000 to meet ihe expenses to be in- onrred in carrying ont its provisions. Mr. Persons asks, first: Will you inform me if there Is any law or rating which can tax any bank, corporate or private, for paying ont a bond of any sovereign State in the United States in payment of checks npon such banks where the holders of such checks are willing to receive such bonds in pay ment ; second, or is there any Uw or rat ing which can in apy manner tax any bank far receiving or paying snch bonds in lien of currency beyond the usual tax on average deposits of any character; and, third, would not the State, private and national banka etand on the same footing as to receiving or paying ont such bonds? After a brief referenee to the bonds Jin question, the Commissioner replies that he does 'not regard them as “money,” within the meaning and intent of that word &3 nsec* in tbs portion of the revised statutes im posing a tax upon bank deposits,- and af ter farther consideration he conolndes as follows: “In reply to yonr inquiries, therefore, I have to say thrt there is no rating of this Barean, nor in my opinion is there any internal revenue Uw which requires a tax fxom any bank or banker for paying ont the bonds of the State of Georgia in satisfaction of oheoks drawn npon snoh banks, nor is there any internal revenue law which imposes a tax npon any bank or banker for reoeiviDg or paying ont suob bonds in lien of currenoy. State banks, private banks and national banks scant i upon tbs same footing under the internal revenue laws as to receiving and paying out snob bonds.” San Francisco, April 11.—The follow ing card is famished for publication: ' The Chinese Six Companies are daily in receipt of applications for laborers to go to the Southern States, notably Missis sippi and Louisiana, to take the pUoe of negro labor now emigrating. The offi cers of these companies wish it to be ex pressly understood that they have no control over their people’s labor, and have never brought or caused to be brought one of their countrymen, and have never contracted their labor or col lected their wages in any manner what soever, the press of California to the contrary notwithstanding. (Signed) “ThbChinxsk Six Companies.” ConstANTiNOPtx, April 11.—The Sal- tin, yielding to the urgent representa tions of 'the Grand Vizier, has recalled several exiled personages and ordered the release of others from prison. Sr. Pxtxbsbcrs,April 11.—The Agence Rutst announces that negotiations are now proceeding between the great powers upon the proposal of the Porte forwarded to St. Petersburg by Eogland that in stead of a mixed occupation tho powers should agree to the nomination of Aleko Pasha, who is popular with all classes as Governor of Eastern Bonmelta, the Porte to agree to the prolongation of the au thority to the international commission for one year, and to abstain daring that period from occnpying points it has a right to garrison. The Agence Russe adds that this arrangement might meet with approval if an absolute agreement existed between the powers and their Un- at Constantinople. Timova and of the mother country with the eolon'es, with the view of placing commercial relations on a more satisfactory basis. The vernaonlar papers of Hong Kong and Shanghai, eBpeoially the former, are extremely bitter against tbe proposed measure, and claim tbe protec tion guarantee J by the treaty, and draw piotures of future relations and the exten sion of Amsrioans from Chinese soil. They exaggerate the oonseqnenoes to America 01 toe withdrawal of tbe Chinese labor, bat speak with moderation though with firmness of the reactionary move ment by China on her oyn ground.” Great excitement prevails over the dis covery of the alleged practice by the Datch colonists in the Straits settlements of kidnapping Coolie 1 from Singapore and holding them in bondage at Penang and the neighborhood. The newly opened Chinese ports, hoi and others, fail to meet the ex; tions of commercial speculators. Foreign trade is impeded or destroyed by the efforts of the native merchants. Insurrections continue as before, and there is no material change in the posi tion or the rebel forces, which are gener ally successful. Lord Lytton, Viceroy of India, tele graphs the governor of Hong Kong that General Grant will reaoh Hong Kong abont the middle of April. ChabiiXston, April 11.—Jeff Davids, the negro murderer, who was to have been hanged to Abbeville to-day, has been respited until October 10th. The Hudderafleld Cham ber of Commerce has passed a resolution that in view of the commercial policy adopted by Canada, being practically prohibitive of the import of British manufactures, their Chamber memorial ise the House of Commons to appoint a select committee to consider the relations Pak- expeeta- Unprofitable Steamship Enterprise. —The Annual report of tbe American Steamship Company, recently made at Philadelphia, is noc very encouraging. The gross receipts daring 1878 were $876,243, and the operating expenses 1684,305, lsaviog as net earnings $191,- 937. These net earnings were all con sumed by ageney, advertising and wharf expenses and tbe interest on the compa ny’s debt, and, in addition, $4,943 m .re, whioh is tbe deficit on the year’s opera tions. Compared with 1877 the receipts show $61,428 decrease, and the expenses $131,432 decrease. There would have been a email surplus shown on tbe busi ness of 1878 bad ic not been for tbe pay ment of collision damages, amounting to $11,417, and there is still an unsettled case in which it is estimated tbe compa ny will have to pay $45,000.
