Quebec, August 16.—In order to ren
der the reports of the riot more intelligi
ble it may be well to state that the upper
part of Champlain street leading to the
Cove from the city is inhabited prlnci
pally by Irish, and higher np towards Sil
ery street the portion ef the Btreet called
Cape Blanc is known as the French dis
trict. St. Boohe and St. Sanvenr are also
principally Frenoh, and alontoilm ward
Irish and Frenoh.
The evening paper estima'es the
penaes caused to tne city by the riot at
over $50,000, exclusive of the oommer-

rioting and assault at Cape Blsno
oontinned at intervals, but there ia sot
so much apprehension now of another
stand-up fight. The Ninth Battalion
which has been called ont and which
composed principally of Frenoh Cana

meeting of the members of the old ship
laborers’ society has been called for to
night on Priest’s wharf and will be ad

mayor, John Sharpies, of Sharpies & Co.,
sal W. W. Bae. of Allen & Bae, the ob

f.ooioty to accept the term3 desired by
ttae French seceders.
The upper town ia pretty free from
troubles aud strangers and business men
are not interfered with by either

have nothing to fear in the city.

Newport, Augnst 16.—Several wit
nesses testified before the Butler Inves
tigating Committee to-day, to the use of
money at elections in Bhode Island.
J. M. Foster, Jr., swore he had receiv
ed ten dollare through a trap door. He
did not know who gave it to him. Both
he and Ohas. C. Heath said they had
seen checks given to voters for which,
when presented in a dark ball and at the
rum shops, they received five and ten
dollars.
Heath said two thousand dollars were
used in the 8th ward in the election of
1875. The Federal officers were very ac
tive participants in the elections, bnt he
had never rcoeived money from them.
Judge Irwin T. Case testified that the
Federal officers at Providince took an ao-
tive part in politics, and wero always at
tho poIl3 electioneering. It was an open
thing that votes were bought and Bold.
The Democrats were so strong that they
were always in the market and always
bought up. He had never been bought
himself. It .‘fused to eay whether he had
bought voters.
Edwin B. Dawley, former Chairman of
the City Bspnblioan Committee, said he
had not seen the Federal officers nee
money, bat he believed money had been
caid.
William N. Bicbardson, former clerk in
the poet-office under General Brayton,
said the po3t-office was political head
quarters, and that the workers, wire
pullers aud politicians came at all times
to eee the postmaster and plan the cam
paign. Drunkenness was a common
thing in the post-office; he had seen the
postmaster and two or three clerks drank
repeatedly in the office. He knew Gen
eral Brayton was in politics, as he had
done the political for him while a clerk
in the post-offioe. The Bepnblican tickets
were arranged at the postoffice and cars
ried out by the carriers, while the mails
were allowed to wait. Clerks were taken
off with the postmaster to Warwick,
twenty miles from the city, to do election
work end vote at cancns meetings and
cn elsct'on days. He was a soldier, and

The memorable fire on the seventeenth

and unlimited credit of several of our
staunchest and most deserving mer

All of the bnrnt ont parties are at work
again elsewhere, and one of the fitms,
that of Messrs. O. EL. Bjgers & Cc.. are
having constructed for them an immense
brick store on the site of the former
building, wbich they expect to bave com

But the obj90t of this article is to make
particular mention of the drug house of
Messrs. Hunt, B-mkin & Lamar, as they
bave already been re-habilitated in every
sense of tbe word, and are now in fait
blast, and marching on with increased
momentum in the road to fortune. Tbe
disastrous cocfligration alluded to, in
brief space of tim9, swept away no less
than forty-five thousand dollars’ worth of
valuable drugs and other goods owned by
this firm. Upon the same, there
partial inenranoa only. Yet we fiad them
by noon or the same day, when the fires
were still glowing, and all was panic and

establishment of Messrs. J. W. Butko &
Co., and quietly removing thither the
small remnant of goods that had been
saved. To obtain possession of these de
sirable and extensive premises, they did
not hesitate to pay a handsome bonus to
the occupants, and were so fortunate as
to secure a lease of them for five years.

New Orleans, Angaat 16.—Dr. C. B.
White, sanitary director ot the Auxiliary
Sanitary Association, in bis regular
weekly report to the executive committee
says: The total mortality in this city for
tho week ending on the 15th instant, is
62. There has not been a oase of yellow
fever daring the past week, nor’a suspici

the highest possible health.
John G. Weatcrfleld, a veteran of the
New Orleans press was found doad in bis

years of age and his death resalted from
heart disease.
Memphis, August] 16—Twenty-one
new cases were reported to-day, 14 of
them being colored. Among the whites
are W. H. Ennis, Anton Franklin, Mrs.
S. E. Butler and Cordelia Atwood.
There have been no deaths sinco noon.
All tho prominent sick are doing well to
night.
An experienced yellow fever nurse was
telegraphed for to-day to go to Bailey
Station, two mile3 east of Memphis, on
tho Charleston railroad. Anotner case of
fever hae been developed at Whitehaven
Tennessee—a ohild of L. Goff, ticket
agent. The Howards sent a nurse there
this afternoon.
Dr. W. L. Coleman, of San Antonio,
Texas, who was ordered by tbo National
Board of Health to investigate the orig
in of the fever prevailing in this city, has
been quietly at work for a month past.
While he is not at liberty to make public
the manner in which the germs were in-
trodnoed, yet his investigations convince
him that they were imported direct from
the West Indies, and that these passed
New Orleans quarantine unchallenged,
and arrived in this city some time in
June.
The Howard Association have 207
nuraea attending 196 families, 120 of
them whites and 76 colored. Their ex
penses aggregate dally $900. The total
number of deaths from yellow fever for
the week ending at six p. m. to night is
40; to date, 139. The weather is dear
and cool, and the thermometer has not
ranged higher than 72 degrees daring the
day. H. P. Bickell, city editor of the
Avalanche, ia down with the fever.

Is a compound of tlie virtues of sarsapa

with the iodide of potashand iron, all pow
erful blood-making, blood-cleansing, and
life-sustaining elements. It is the purest,
safest, and in every way the most effectual
alterative medicine known or available to
tho public. The sciences of medicine and
chemistry have never produced so valua
ble a remedy, nor one so potent to cure
all diseases resulting from impure blood.
It cures Scrofnla, and all scrofulous
diseases, Erysipelas, Rose, or St. An

By its searching and cleansing qualities
It purges out the foul corruptions which
contaminate the blood, anti cause de
rangement and decay. It stimulates and
enlivens tho vital functions. It promotes
energy and strength. It restores and pre
serves health© It infuses new life and
vigor throughout the whole system. No

impurity of the blood need despair, who
will give Ayer’s Sarsaparilla a fair

the speedier the cure.
Its recipe has been furnished to physi
