referee declared the match a draw—neith
er man having any decided advantage.
This decision gave great dissatisfaction
and Donovan, after going off the stage,
returned and tock bis position bnt was led
off again by bis seconds.
• There were several fouls claimed agaiast
Donovan for hitting McKellan wben down
but were not allowed.

business"; penalty for first offense to be
a thousand dollars; five thousand for the
eeoond offense, and a fine of 2.600 dollars
and su-peubion from the privileges of the
floor for 12 moot ha.
A resolution requesting the Board of
Managers lo frame tbe proposed regala
tion into by-laws, was carried by a vote
of 47 to 19.

Cape May reports schooner Maty Ann
of Philadelphia, lying in a dangerous po
sition in front of the Station. The craw
deserted her in a boat at 6 p. m. yester
day, tbe boat capsized and tbe sea washed
them ashore in an exhausted condition.
The Captain refused to leave tbe vessel.
Life saving crew No. 40 ran a line
oat to her and remained on duty all
night. The schooner was all right this
morning.
Tbe sea high, maximum velocity of
wind, 61 miles from the north—total rain
fall 8 46 100 inches.

At four p. m. schooner Flora Curtis, of
Perth Amboy, N. J , was blown ashnte.
l'ho life saving crew hauted a life boat to
a point opposite the wreck, bnt could not
get to the schooner, tbe surf running so
high. Tbe crew remained in the rigging
until Ibtee a. m., when they were rescued
by the life saving crew.
Tbo amount of rainfall was nearly ten
inohes. AH the yaohts were damaged,
four tank and one was oarried one to
sea.
At s later hour Atlantic City reports
that the sohooner before reported as
ashore was bound from Port Apatsuk,
Virginia, with pine wdod for New Fork.
The erew consisted of Captain Pieree and
font men. Tbe schooner will b9 strip
ped at once. It is feared Bhe wili bs a
total loss.
Norfolk, Virginia, reports: This vicin
ity hsa been visited by the severest rain
storm and tornado ever experienced. It
moved from tbe southwest to the north
west, commencing at 2:30 p. m„ and
reaching its utmost in velooity at about
11a.m. Many buildings were unroofed
and flooded.
The rain at the time was ponring down
in sneh torrents that it was impossible to
see twenty feet beyond the bow of the
vessel. Another see, which washed
over her deck, swept one of the large ms-
tallo boats from ita position, and lodged
it on top of tbe effioers’ cabin.
Daring the storm the barometer on the
Hopkins felt to 29.9 inohes. A portion
of her cargo was damaged by water, bnt
to what extent is unknown.
The sohooner Ann Turner from Balti
more, shipped heranohois and was inn
ashore to save the vessel and oargo.

Petersburg for Philadelphia, with lnmber,

ashore on Nancy Island.
The schooner Mary Emily, of this
port, lost her anohor, chains uni boat.

A three-masted schooner, name un
known, is ashoro off Wind Mill Point;
aud there a masted schooner, bottom np,
was passed in Hampton Boads. The
sterner Besolnte of the Baker Wrecking
Company, which went ashore on Terry
Point, is broken in two. The damage
by the storm was considerable.
Foung oorn is said to be very much in
jnred, while that planted early in the
season is in better condition.
Peaches and apples have all been blown
from the trees, while many of the trees
were prostrated.
The steamer Accomlock strived at the
usual boar this morning from Hampton,
and reports that tbo Btorm wag very se
vere in that section. A portion of tbe
roof of the Hygela Hotel wss blown off,
causing the building to be damaged by
the tain pouring in. Nearly every vessel
at anohor inside Hawkins’ Hall dragged
and went ashore. The pilot boat, Phan
tom, slipped her gables and went to eea
cot being able to bold on inelde the
Hall.

Richmond, Va., August 19.—James N.
Stevens, who on the night of the lltb
instant, murdered his wife near Freeca -
tie, Virginia, has oommlUed suicide. Af

the yard and shot himself through
the heart with the same weapon he had

Lascistzb, Pa, August 19.—'The en
gine and four oars of the Atlantio Express
was thrown from the track, at DilUville,

District Attorney Kuowlton without
knowledge or instigation of the directors.

Long Branch, August 20.—A daring
attempt was made last night to rob the
vault of the Long Branch Banking Com
pany by five men, who assaulted, bound
and gagged the police officer on the street
—entered the bank, and attempted to
blow open the safe with gunpowder, bat
fled at the sound of the explosion without
obtaining a dollar, leaving a kit of tools.
The safe was not opened.
PITT8TON, Pa., August 20 —The driver
boys and car runners at Exeter colliery,
opeiated by the Lehigh Italian Company
nere, are on a strike for an increase of
wages. Tbe mine is idle and nearly 500
men and boys ont of employment.
New York, August 20.—A epeoial from
Vickeburg, Miis., says the Faxoo cocn’-y
difficulty, growing out of Dixon ruoniog
as an independent candidate for sheriff,
culminated in tbe shooting of Dixon by
James H. Barksdale, candidate for clerk.
Dixon was shot three times and died at
4 p. m. yesterday.
Memphis, August 20.—Twelve eases

this morning, six of whom were colored.

stated that Count De Szell, the present
Hungarian minister of finance, will be

that he does not intend to participate in

New Foax, August 23.—The steam
ship Lissing, which arrived from Europe
to-day, brought 310.000 dollars in gold
coin and bars.
FiiTiiodth, Mass., August 20.—Five
yatebs left here Sunday night and Mon
day morning for Hull and Provincetown,
between fifteen and twenty persons on
board. No traces of them can be fonnd
along the coast, and it is thought they
were lost in the severe storm of
Monday night.
Washington, August 20.—At a ses
sion of the Mississippi River Improve
ment Commission yesterday and to-day,
all the members were present. Organi
zation was effected by the appointment
of General Comstock, of the engineer
corps, as Secretary pro ten1.
A committee was appoints], Oomposed
of General Harrison, of Indianapolis,
Professor Mitohell, of the Coast Survey,
and Major Suter, of tbe Eogineer corps,
to submit recommendations as to the
best method of obtaining and compiling
statistics of trade, commerce, etc., of the
Mississippi Talley, and snob other data
as may be required for the use of the
commission. Another committee waa ap
pointed, consisting of General Comstook,
of tbe Eogineer corps, Professor Mitoh
ell, of the Coast Survey, Major Safer, of
the Eogineer oorps, and Major Hsrrod, of
New Orleans, to prepare a plan for the
fature work of the commission, and to’
make recommendations with regard to
the nse and expenditure of the exist
ing appropriation of $175,000. Tnese
committees are in session this afternoon
and are expected to report to-morrow. If
they do so and it their reports shall be
adopted the commission will probably
adjourn to-morrow or Friday. St. Louts
has been selected as the permanent
headquarters of the commission and the
office there will be under tbe immediate
charge of the permanent secretary, who
will be the executive officer of the com
mission and act under the direction of a
committee to be selected from among
the members who reside in the West.

day, reports that she pissed a sohooner
capsized in tho middle ground of the
Chesapeake, name unknown. Also a
threo masted schooner anchorad in the
roads, with two of her masts gone. The
mainmast only remained.
Gold bobo, N. C., August 20.—The
State Frees Association of North CaroUna
met in seventh annnal cession to-day at
the Gregory House. The attendance of
members was good. Tho meeting waa
presided over by Colonel Wm. L. Saun
ders, Secretary of Stats, who made the
opening address. Wes followed by a poem
by C. C. Manly, of Newborn. The annu
al eleotion of officers then took place.
Anscy Battle, of Tstboro, was made
President. Ashervllle, North Carolina, was
selected as the next place of meeting. At

by Colonel J. D. Cameron, of Newbero,

Dztboit, August 20.—This forenoon
at 11:30 a fire broke out in tbe large mill
atd nit block of Sanborn & Chloss, at
Carrollton, opposite East Saginaw, Mioh-
gan, and in thirty minutes had consumed
the mill. Salt block, two brick houses had
a salt shed containing four thousand bar
rels of salt, several dwellings, six million
feet of lumber, and three thoasaad cords
of wood. The fire is not yet (3 p. m.)
under control, and the village of Carroll
ton is in great danger, as a strong breeze
is blowing in the direction of the town.
The loss is roughly estimated at one
hundred thoasaad dollars.

3:40. The preliminary trial takes place
to-morrow. Tho difficulty is represented
as of a personal nature by Barksdale’s
friends.

Bar Association met in the Town Hall at
ten a. m., and Hon. Luke F. Poland, of

Baltimore, August 20.—Henry J.
Bogers, agent in the erection of the first
telegraph line baiwewa this city and

died at his residence in this city this
morning, aged sixty-four years. He was
subsequently Superintendent of the North
American Telegraphic company and was
the author of the code of Marine signals,
now in nse at all the ports of the couc-
try.
Baltimobs, Augw»t 20.—Additional
particulars of Monday’s gale in the Ches
apeake ranched this city to-day. The
schooner J. C. Henry, ef Philadelphia,
foundered off the mouth of the great Wi

WAtnutOTOS, Angnst 20.—At to-day’s
meeting of the National Board of Health
tbe chief question considered was that of
famishing rations to the people of Mem
phis now living in tents in the vioinity of
the city. Although.the matter was dis
cussed at considerable length, no de
cision was arrived at. It will oome np
again to-morrow when it will probably
be decided.
A State department dispatch from the
consul at Mata moron recommends an
effective quarantine at Bagdad on the
Mexican bank of tbe Bio Grande. Dr.
Combe, who is now in Texas, was se
lected as the proper person to mako in
spection, and has been instructed to that
end. The Board*’ notion was communi
cated to the State.
Vicxsbdho, Angnst 29.—Last night,
Joe Fisher, a yanjk of 17, shot and mor
tally wounded his colored mistress. The
causa was jealousy. The women la still
alive, but her case Is hopeless. Fisher
escaped. Hs was trad at several times
while escapiog.
August 20.—Twenty- seven
cases in all were reposted to-day, twelve
whites and fifteen eolored. Among
those reported this afternoon were C. P.
Baldwin. Geo. Dojis and J. B. Theix-
lauf. Two deaths occurred since noon,
