When in operation the fur nace gives employment to many hundred hands; —The Liverpool Post says that the enor mous richness of the old gold field on the Guinea ooast has not been exaggerated in the reports received of late. Bir John Glover’s statement, that he had travelled over districts where one might dig up gold like potatoes, is all bnt literally realised in recent diaooveries, which give $C30 per ton of quartz at a depth of 53 feet, and 915 on the surface. Their extent is practically unlimited. —A Washington telegram Bays the silver certificate bids fair to tako the place of the standard eilver dollar to a great extent. In paying out ten per cent, of checks in silver dollars, the Treasurer is generally aeked for .certificates In their stead. This is especially the cue with banka. Tbe banks then pay them ont over their counter the same u greenbacks. In this way a large amount of silver certificates have got into circulation in this city. —The effect of hard times in England is observable in tbe decreased expenditure upon articles of luxury. People are getting on with lets jewelry and fewer servants and hones than before, and many people even who kept consciences have begun to praotioo eoonomy by ceasing to indoige them. Bo, at least, may be inferred from the fact that the amount of conscience money remitted last year to the chancellor of the exchequer was only 933,COO, as compared with 974,270 for the fiscal year of lb76-77. Colyar, who, while on a recent visit to New Tork, had interviews with the largest holders of Tennessee bonds. The Colonel reports unanimously that these bondholders are about to bring suit against the State in the courts. He states the issues as fol lows: Mr. C.—The main question which the New York lawyers are agreed upon, is that the third section of the funding act of 1873 wu a part of a contract between the State and the bondholders, and ooald not be repealed, and that the act of 1875, repealing it after the funding wu done, wu void, and that it is still the duty of A Mistake.
