of Jiarslialville. He looked as if he was
hugging (iooslwin; I could not swear
that lie put his hands in his pockets, or
that lie robbed him, but they were directly
together. Tlds was about a minute be-
f„re I found out the robbery had been
committed As soon as 1 heard of the
robbery I told Mr. Butner, the Sheriff of

On the cross examination Lieutenant

Kaiford was not there on tlie preliminary

Death of a Great Editor.
Tlie London correspondent of the New
York World “L. J. J,” gives a most in
teresting account of the career and habits
of Mr. Delane, the late editor of tlie
Times, who died on Saturday night No
vember 22d. His complaint was Brights
disease, from tlie effects of which he liad
languished several years
Tlie writer, *in concluding his lengthy
skcteli, says:
There is much that I should like to add
concerning Mr. Dclanc, but I fear that I
have exhausted my space and your readers’
patience. I will therefore only briefly
refer to a few personal characteristics of
the man. He dressed, as a general rule,
after the style of a country gentleman
and looked like a robust and contented
’squire until disease and perhaps overwork
undermined his strength—I put in “per
haps,” for I do not believe that hard work
would ever have injured Mr. Delane if he
had been a sound man. But with a dead
ly malady latent in him, so much labor
and anxiety at night were doubtless dis
astrous in their effects. He did not talk
mueli, even at his own tabic, but what lit
tle he did say went always straight to the
point, ne seemed to exhaust the subject
in a few words.
His range of information was enor
mous, especially on all matters relating
to the political history of his country and
of Europe generally. His memory wa i
very tenacious and exact. He was habit •
ually rather a grave kind of man, and on i
did not often see him laugh. A grim sort
of smile was about all that could be ex
traded from him. He used to go to bed
about five in the morning, get up about
one, sec his contributors from tliree to
half-past four, and then go out for a ride.
He was the last man, as lie used to say,
who rode through Fleet street on horse
back. At ten or half-past, no matter
where he might be dining, he would slip
away and go down to his office, where he
remained till tliree or four, and some
times even later. Tlie Times, I believe,
goes to press earlier now than it did
then, lie did not smoke, and drank
very sparingly of wines. lie was at all
hours and in all places the coolest-lieadcd
man I have ever known. Of course lie
got into a bad temper at times, but he
never lost control over liis judgment.
His house at 10 Sergeant Inn was a dingy
dace, but it was less than half a mile
roin his office, and as it was a quiet and
retired situation, it suited him perfectly.
During his illness lie was nursed by one
whose kindness never failed, and who lias
seemed to live but for him—his unma:-
ried sister. On Saturday lie will be
buried at East Hampton, in the churchyard
where Ills father sleeps, and there will be
no one at his funeral save the Immediate
members of his family. Thus will be las 1
to rest a man who in Ills time wielded al*
most incredible power, who made aw I
unmade ministries, and who greatly help •
ed for forty years to direct tlie course of
empires. No journalist before him evei
was so powerful, and it, is doubted
whether any that come after him will at
tain to liis unrivalled position.
Virginia's Shame—The Moral.
Tlie coalition of Readjustee and Radi
more than five minutes after Goodwin | cals in tlie Virginia Legislature teaches
was robbed tliat lie made it known.
The maimer of tlie collision in the car
was closely described, and the position of
the defendant shown to the jury, Sheriff
( lierry being used in the illustration,
Tlie officer swore positively tliat he saw
Iiuiford in the car at tlie time of the col
umn between tlie four men. lie did
not search him after he was arrested.
When lie was searched at the barracks, lie
understood that a counterfeit fifty dollar
bill and a twenty dollar bill tom in two
were found on him. In rebuttal Lieuten
ant Ilurly stated it was aliout three or five
minutes after Goodwin was robbed tliat
he told it to him. Goodwin'came to him
and told him that he was robbed of be
tween seven and eight hundred dollars.
Tlie testimony of Mr. Goodwin was
tMd by the Solicitor General to the jury
< prove the conviction of Brooks, the
principal. The testimony of Lieutenant
U nr ley on tlie trial of Brooks was also
read by Mr. Bartlett to the jury, at the rc-
yiest of defendant’s counsel.
After argument and the charge of tlie
Mart the case was submitted and a ver
dict of acquittal was rendered by tlie jury.
Tim verdict was a surprise alike to
’V court, the attorneys and the prisoner.
Tlie verdict in the case of Abner Mack,
>'.urged with assault with intent to mur
der, was guilty of assault and battery and
tot acquitted as was reported.
Tlie ease of Mr. John W. Burge, charged
•’itli tbe murder of Mr. Tola some'six
years since, lias been set for this inoniin:
two important salient lessons.
First, tlie only safe path to tread in this
world is that of honesty and integrity
This unholy combination will bring dis
grace and contumely upon a noble com
monwealth.
Tlie other lesson which Geoigians should
not be slow to apply, is the utter unrelia
bility, venality and corruption of the Repub
lican party South. With one accord they
have united with those who deliberately
propose to swindle the creditors of tlie
State, and have received their reward in
sundry petty offices bestowed upon the
hybrid crew which make up their follow
ing.
In tlie elections next year every patriot
should point the moral of Virginia's ca
tastrophe, by resolving to drop personal
considerations and predilections in tlie
choice of candidates, and work for the
regular nominees of the Democratic party.
Either support the standard bearers of the
oiganization or dispense alike with con
ventions and nominations. In a State
where so large a Republican clement can
be rallied at the shortest notice, however,
as is the case in Georgia, the latter means
would probably result in the destruction
of the Democratic organization, and the
triumph of our enemies. It would also
give rise to factions, and engender per
sonal feuds which it would take long
years to obliterate.
In good time then, would we sound a
note of warning, and call upon our bretli-
rcn to decide in primary assembly or elec
tion, at the proper time, who they desire
nominated, then when a fair count has
been made in convention, stand by the
men you had a voice in selecting. Every
intelligent citizen has a right to aspire to
any office of honor in the gift of the peo
ple. But when the question has been
fairly decided, all should acquiesce cheer
fully in tlie result, and labor to preserve
intact tliat oiganization which rescued
the commonwealth from tlie rapacious
jaws of Radicalism, and is our only hope
in the future. Most especially should it
be remembered that to maintain our as
cendency in local elections, is vastly more
important than to achieve victory in a
Presidential contest. The former secures
personal rights and the security of life
and liberty to Geoigians. Tlie latter,
though highly desirable, doss not affect
our immediate welfare to any such seri
ous extent. ___
