Intense Coi.d in Canada.—Intensely cold weather prevailed in Ottawa valley, Canada, on the 18th, the thermometer ranging 15 to 34 degrees below zero. In this city it was 18 degrees below zero. —The com crop of the United States and Territories is larger this year than any previous by over 150,000,000 bushels. The country west of the Mississippi re turned over 100,000,030 bushels more than in 1878. Taemaoe Sustained. — Jamaica, Long Island, December 18.—The Pres byterian Synod, of Long Island, this after noon, by a two-thirds vote, sustained Dr. Talmago, by dismissing the appeal from the decision of the Presbytery in his case. _jThe Vicksburg Commercial describes the state of affairs in that city as being nearly as bad as in Brooklyn. There are property owners there who have paid no taxes on real estate since 1872, and the city has no power to compel them to pay. —Some time ago a medical man in ex tensive practice sued the f<0P*> n “ nd Southwestern Railroad for compensation ( for injury, and obtained $35,000. Subse quently lie renew ed the suit on the plea of inadequate compensation, and lie lias just received §80,000. —A severe storm has prevailed in the Red river country of the Northwest for two days, and the mercury at different points lias fallen 25 to 40 degrees, below zero. At Breckinridge. Minnesota, two cliildren of Wm. Owens have been frozen to death, and two men are supposed to have been lost and frozen in the storm. —According to Soctbler’s estimates, the metalic circulation of the Latin Union amounts to 4,000,000,000 francs gold, 1,- 800,000,000 francs silver, and 471,000,000 francs subsidiary coin. In American money the corresponding estimates are about gold, $800,000,000, $300,000,000 silver, and $94,200,000 subsidiary coinage. —The Democratic majority for Gover nor of Louisiana was 30,751. The new Constitution had a majority of 59,072, and the repudiating-debt ordinance, voted on separately, was carried by 13,97<5. Debt- ordinance advocates are trying to prove that repudiation does not repudiate, but they make a sorry job of it. —Hydrophobia is proven to be a dis ease, and one which is transmissible by inoculation. Some French surgeons re cently made direct experiments witli tlie bloed and saliva of a man dying of the disease, in a Paris hospital. Rabbits were inoculated with the saliva, and after the interval of a short period of incubation evinced unmistakable signs of hydropho bia, finally dying in convulsions. The blood, however, did not act with the same poisonous effects. —A canvass of the Harvard Law School, just completed, gives the following result: Proportion of Republican votes, 58. per cent.; of Democratic votes, 42 per cent. On the Presidential question—For Bayard, 38 per cent.; Sherman, 14 per cent.; Grant, 10 per cent.; Edmunds, 7 per cent.; Blaine, 7'per cent.; Hayes, 6 per cent.; Evnrts, 0 per cent.; “anti-Grant,” C per cent’.; scat tering, C per cent. The polls were open for a week and hard work was done for Grant. —General S. L. Woodford went to Louisiana and told the Democracy that the school-house must take the place of the otiot-guu.—Boston Journal. This proves that the General is an ass. How does he expect a man is going to take a school-house on his shoulder and go into the woods to shoot a coon? How does lie expect a school-house to blow the head off of a man who didn’t know it was loaded? How does he expect Senator Coukling to blush and look embarrassed at the men tion of a school-house? Oli. yes; it’s a clear case.—Boston Post. A Geoisoia Farmek’s Success.—We know a man, now a large farmer, and living near Americus, whose record reads like romance. lie began life since the war a poor young man as a farm-hand, working for wages. He has inherited nothing, and has been engaged in no business except farming. He, this year, will make ninety bales of cotton, has not brought a single bale to market, does not propose to sell a hale before spring, and he is able to hold it. He owns one of the best plantations in Southwest Georgia, and it is his boast that he buys nothing upon which to feed man or beast except sugar and coffee; but, on the contrary, has something to sell of almost any product of southern soil. Last year he made 1,600 gallons of syrup, and this year has sold over 200 pounds of butter. — Americus (Ga.) Recorder. —General Grant, as a telegram from Philadelphia assures us, last night verbal ly expressed liis willingness to accept the Presidency of the Nicaraguan Canal Com pany as soon as the capital of the company could be secured, and with it the proper concessions from the Nicaraguan Govern ment. As it has long been understood that Nicaragua would gladly make any concession necessary to secure the accep tance by General Grant of the Presidency of -eatjenterprise, and as there are good ■is for believing that the capital re- d will be forthcoming as soon as Gtlfeal Grant is ready to hind liimseif to asstu|e that position, there should be no delay now Tft’pi'irwing forward the neces sary preliminaries To the formation of a successful American canaL. company. Probably its main office had bettor not be located in Chicago. « —The English papers, says the Alrnfi- ean, put a cheerful face on the Aight^i situation; bat, say what they will, 7,00^, ■ men, securely blocked up in a hostile country, surrounded by thousands of the beet fighting men in Asia, with deep gor ges, nigged mountains—a waste of snow and ioe lying for two hundred miles be tween, them and succor, are in no pleasant predicament. Russia stands beyond to give encouragement to the Afghans, all the tribes of all that country will be likely to gather to the hunt to be in at the death. Tlie game is securely brought to bay and even Euglislunen cannot accomplish mira cles while a large proportion of the British troops are Sepoys unused to the climate *"'1 wholly lacking the British fortitude. The reinforcements have been checked in their onward march, and it is clear that the safety of the army depends upon the noility of the Indian Government to hurry a lari't- f orce through the passes twixt Jellalabad and the English position near babul. A Ponwl Gathering; Will Iks held in the lecture room oi tlic First Baptist church on Tuesday, the 23d instant, beginning at 10 a.m., and closing at l p.m. It is hoped every member of the church and congregation will make a contribu tion for the benefit and comfort of the in digent. Messrs. L. W. Hunt and J. C. Wheeler, Mrs. Little, Phillips, Parsons, M. R. Rogers, J. J. Brantly, Manson, Porter, Hunt, Wheeler and Miss Lumsden will constitute the committee to reeaive and distribute contributions. —The Bessie Darling combination comes from Augusta to this city. —Our merchants have very large and attractive stocks of holiday goods. A number of what-is-it kind of people have been in Macon for the past few days. The Brown House case will come up before Judge Simmons to-morrow morn ing. The chain gang is now fuller than ever and doing a large amount of work on the streets. The arrivals of Christmas turkeys will be immense this year and all will have one of the royal birds served with cranberry on the 25tli instant. —A sewer is being laid at the comer of Third and Poplar streets to drain the cel lars of one or two of the stores on the block between Poplar and Clierry. —The Sunday School of the First Bap tist Chnreli is requested to meet very promptly at 9:30 o’clock, and, for particu lar reasons, a full attendance is requested. ■ —Poplar street is receiving the atten tion of the chain-gang, and Third street lias been reached, the east side of Poplar having been duly put in order. —Rustic beauties and others have been in the city for the past few days, and sometimes whole families from the rural districts invade a single store. —The injunction case of the Southwest ern Railroad, by which the State is en joined against the collection of certain taxes, is set to be heard before Judge Simmons to-morrow morning at cham bers. —After the serenade by the p. o. b’s, the Italian nobleman was dismissed on the hill with directions *y which to reach his magnificent suite of rooms in the city, but the I. n. unfortunately mistook the way and barely reached his apartments for breakfast yesterday morning. ' —It Is probable a bridge will be placed over tlie Vineville branch at the foot of Jefferson street. This street has been placed in excellent condition by tlie chain gang recently. Before the proposed bridge is put in position, however, it would-be well to put the upper roadway across the branch in passable condition. Sev eral persons recently have driven to the crossing, and finding it so wretchedly bad, they were afraid to endanger their vehicles by attempting a passage. JIacon Volunteer’s Fair. During the first week in January, the Macon Volunteers will hold a grand fair for the benefit of the company. It will be conducted on tlie plan of tlie Seventh ■Regiment’s in New York. Many of the merchants have signified their intention of being contributors. • The ladies of Macon have been appealed to, and, with tlieir assistance, tlie affair will undoubtedly be a grand success. The committee appointed consists of Lieuten ant W. B. Sparks, Lieutenant G. C. Con ner, Corporal Ed Isaacs, Private J. S. Iver son and Secretary C. T. King. Lieutenant Sparks heads the list of contributors with tlie generous donation of a bale of cotton. All the ladies who feel an interest in the company will meet the committee at Masonic Hall, on Wed nesday morning at ten o’clock. ^Ir/w^cxU. Tills genttemau keeps a saddlery store in Blake’s block, and his stock is neatly made up, and of the best material. Anything wanted in his line, if not on hand, will be manufactured at tlie short est notice and in the most approved style. Some of his harness, saddles and other goods, are very elegant as well as substan tial. Mr. Kent, by bis industry and per sistent attention to business, has built up a fine trade, and he has also added to liis establishment a wlieel-wright shop near by, where tlie neatest and best wagons, buggies, etc., are made to order. We saw while visiting liis shop a bread wagon ordered by Mr. L. Merkel, which is by far the handsomest vehicle ol tlie kind that we ever remember to have beheld. The panel work of the body is exquisite and was modelled after one of Merkel’s beautiful infant carriages. The painting, too, and decorations are exceedingly tasty. Mr. Merkel will parade his luscious loaves in tills elegant equipage to-morrow. His customers would do well to keep a sharp lookout for their daily bread, as they may not recognize the Merkel wagon in all its new bravery. Read Mr. Kent’s advertise ment. Bessie Darling;. To-morrow evening this charming actress and her fine company will appear at Ral ston Hall in the character of Julia in the Hunchback. Slie made a great reputation in London last season. She comes her alded with very fine notices from the press which from their uniform commen dation give promise of very fine perform ances. The New York Graphic speaks of her as follows: Miss Bessie Darling, who began an en gagement last night at the Eagle Theatre by appearing as Julia in the “Hunch back,’’has decided qualifications fora dra matic career. It was made evident last night that she is not to be classed with those mistaken ladies, who, fortified with only a large degree of self confidence, a taste for theatrical performances and an ahnndant wardrobe, rush like motlis into the flame of the footlights and are there consumed for the edification of their friends and neighbors. Mist Darling, apart from personal ad vantages of a decided order, evidently pos sesses sterling dramatic stuff. Her Julia was very effective; her outbursts were im passioned as well as forcible, and her fa- I -ession and action were exceed- 11 conceived and executed. We ason why it should not be con- ne of tlie most effective “Julias ” f late years, and as a well co.ored ntially dramatic performance it :liy of all commendation. Miss was called out alter all her prin cipal scenes, and twice summoned before tlie footlights at the final fall of the cur- tain. <(> | A lady's Wish. “Oh how I do wish my skin was as clear and soft as yours,” said a lady to her iricml. “You can easily make it so,” an swered the friend. “How ?” inquired the first lady. “By using Hop Bitters, that makes pure rich blood and blooming health. It did it for me, as you observe.” Read of it .—Cairo Bulletin. 2w. jfasonlc Celebration. We learn from the Fort Valley Mirror that on Hie 27th instant the lodge of Ma sons of that place will celebrate St John’s Day, with appropriate ceremonies. Mr. Roland B. Hall, of this city, one of the most prominent Masons here, and one of the Grand Officers of the State of the Knights Templar, has been invited to be the orator of the occasion and has accep ted. Mr. Hall has delivered several ora tions before the highest Masonic bodies in the State, and will acquit liimseif with honor on the present occasion. We learn that the meeting in Eastman, of the people of Dodge county to select delegates to the Railroad Convention on the 30th instant, will be held on next Tuesday instead of Wednesday.
