The Railroad Venae.
yesterday evening nearly all of the
railroad men who were interested in
t l, c lease of the Macon and Bruns
wick road returned to their homes, and
tie city recovered from the excitement at
tending the lease of the road the day be
fore. The transaction was the theme of
conversation in all circles, and the subject
canvassed in all of its bearings. The
lease gives satisfaction in all quarters
we have beard from, and much good is
expected to result to the cities of Macon
and Brunswick therefrom.
jlr. Couper was still in the city last
evening settling up the details ofthe lease.
It is understood that possession will be
taken as soon as all the preliminaries of
the lease are perfected, and work on the
extension will be commenced as soon
thereafter as practicable.
The latest report current in regard to
the lease was that measures were on foot
to consolidate the companies represented
by Mr. Vibbard and Mr. E. T. Paine.
One thing is certain, the attorneys of
each party had a joint conference at the
Brown House on Tuesday. What the
result of the conference was has, as a
matter of course, not been made public.
It is thought, however, by some that the
leasing party will, in order to avoid the
threatened suit of Mr. Paine and his asso
ciates, consent to consolidate the two
companies and thereby strengthen both.
Some think that there is no ground of
suit for Mr. Paine, and that he is using
his threat as a means of forcing a coalition
ofthe two interests. It is surmised in
shrewd railroad circles also that the ru
mors of the compromise are exaggerated,
and that they stand on very slender foun
dation. From the best information at
hand we are convinced that the leasing
party does not need any additional
financial strength as it now stands.
Any further developments will be watch
ed with interest.

Free Delivery.
Since its inauguration in this city the
system of free delivery has proven a great
success. Notwitlistanding the fact that the
houses are un-numbered, the carriers have
overcome the difficulties in their way and
become 60 familiar with their routes that
little or no mail matter is now returned
undelivered into the office, except such as
is undeliverable on account of absence of
the parties to whom directed from the dis
trict or city. •
One drawback, however, wliicli mars
the perfect success of the system in the
business portion of the city, is the late ar
rival in the city ofthe evening trains.
Many ofthe business men have availed
themselves of the free delivery system and
have given up their boxes at the post-
office.
For instance, the Southwestern, Savan
nah, Augusta and Atlanta trains reach
the city shortly before 7 o’clock. The
mail then has to he distributed so that
the carriers cannot get away from the of
fice,'if these mails are waited for, until
nearly 8 o’clock. By this time the major
ity ofthe business houses have closed, and
the delivery of the letters that evening is
impossible. The carriers, in reality, go
out from the post-office on their final
rounds at 7:10 in the evening, taking with
them all the mail for the business portion
of the city practicable. In this way let
ters which arrive in Macon, say to-night,
are not delivered until to-morrow morn
ing, too late for tho morning mails. Re
plies to local points cannot be sent until
the next morning, making a delay of
thirty-six hours between the arrival of the
mail until a reply can he' started oa its
journey. This is a very important Item.
The officials of the post-office are doing all
they can, and are ready .to aid in every
way in their power to make the system in
Macon a complete success. The difficulty,
however, is in the arrangement of the
schedules. It is throught that a combined
effort on the part ofthe merchants looking
toward a change of the schedules would
meet with consideration at the liandsof
the railroad officials, and, ifpossiblc, such
changes will be made by them as will
most benefit the business interests of tbe
city.

Going to Texas.
Thomas M. Jackson, a paraly'/ed Con
federate soldier, with an invalid wife and
two children, have arrived in the city from
Lancaster county, South Carolina, and
are on their way to Texas, where they
have friends. They are in a pitiful con
dition, traveling through the country in a
one lioree wagon and dependent on what
they receive as they go along. They are
camping on the old academy lot near the
new school house. The woman called at
this office yesterday and exhibited a cer
tificate of good character of her. husband
signed .by a number of citizens in their
former home and attested officially by the
clerk of the court of Hopkins county,
Texas. They ask for help to get home,
and from their appearance they certainly
need it and as much charity as can be
given.
A Pleasant Surprise.
Yesterday the young ladies of the Se
nior class of the Wesleyan Female Col

tution, a very pleasant surprise in the
shape of a cradle with a complete outfit
for his youngest son and heir, Master
Isaac Lipscomb Bass, aged but a few
weeks.
The gift was a complete and very agree
able surprise to the doctor, but was receiv

the fair donors. .

Ague Cure
Is a purely_ vegetable bitter, and powerful
tonic, and is warranted a speedy and cer
tain cure for Fever and Ague, Chills
arid Fever, Intermittent or ChiU
Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb Ague,
Periodical or UUiotts Fever, ancl all
malarial disorders. In piiasiuatic dis
tricts, the rapid pulse, coated tongue,
thirst, lassitude, loss of appetite, pain in
the back and loins, and, coldness of the
spine and extremities, are only premoni
tions of severer symptoms which termin
ate in the ague paroxysm, succeeded by
high fever and profuse perspiration.
It fs a startling fact, that quinine, ar
senic, and other poisonous minerals form
the basis of rnostof the “Fever and Ague
Preparations,’’ “Specifics,” “Syrups,”
and “ Tonics,” in the market. Tho prep
arations made from these mineral poisons,
although tliey ore palatable, and may
break the chill, do pot cure, but leave tlif
malarial and their own drug poison j-.'
the system, producing quinism, dizziness
ringing in the ears, headache, vertigo, antf
other disorders more -formidable than
the disease they were intended to cure.
Ayer's Ague Cure thoroughly eradicates
these noxious poisons from the system,
and always cures tbe severest cases. It
contains no quinine, mineral,' or any tliinj
that could injnre the most delicate pa
tient: and its crowning excellence, abovo
its certainty to cure, is that it leaves the |
system as free from disease as before the
attack.
For Liver Complaints, Ayer’s Ague
Cure, by direct action on the liver and
biliary apparatus, drives oht the poisons
which produce these complaints, and
stimulates the system to a vigorous,
healthy condition.
We warrant it when taken according j
to directions.
