ilic BiliRNki Cotton Factory to be <>I>-
cratod Sight anil Day.
The Hawkinsville Dispatch contains
the following mention of the cottonfactory
of that place, wliieh was recently pur
chased by Mr. J. C. McBurncy and L. W.
Hollingsworth, of this city:
Mr. McBnmey informed ns this morn
ing that he is making preparations to ron
Ills cotton factory at this place lioth night
and day. So far only enough hands have
been secured to operate the factory in the
day time, hut more are expected to-nior-
fow, and if the force can be sufficiently
increased the factory will he run all night.
There is a heavy demand for the £oods.
Now machinery has arrived, and the ca
pacity of the factory will be doubled. Mr.
McBume/ is regularly in the cotton mar
ket, and his buyer lias already purchased
a few hundred bales for the use of the
factory during the season.
X.cap Year Privileges.
Yesterday afternoon as the shades of
evening were entwining their gentle arms
around the city, a would-be exoduster as
cended the com t house steps, and after
wandciing aimlessly about a moment or
two, was allied by Judge Holt, who hap
pened to be waiting for some one, what
he wanted. ‘He wanted to find
the man who fixed people up to
be married.” “Yes, Judge McMann ,
he had just left. He could be found
at his lionse.” Exoduster—with the air of
a man who does not want to know—replied
that lie did not know where lie lived, ne
had hunted for the Judge before, but had
been to the side door (evidently into
the post-olHee), and could not find him.
“When did lie want to mai.y?” “Sunday
night, but (speaking euiphalically) if I
can’t get the license now I’ll break it up.”
Judge Holt remarked that from appear
ances he did not think he was"anxious for
the ceremony any way, and tlic da.key
said that there was no anxiety in that re
paid about him, and sadly he drifted
down the street to-ward. the monument.
Evidently some dusky female is making
good use of the pa ring season and its
privileges. . , >}l
Monument to Dr. Pierce.
Thc.ersction of a suitable monument
to tlic memory of Dr. Lovic Pierce has
been determined on by the Melliodisto of
many parts of the S.atc. A few days
since Rev. J. O. A. Cook, of Columbus,
Rev. Dr. J. S. «ey, Rev. G. G. N. Mac-
donell and several others on the commit
tee appointed by tlic late Conference in
Perry to look after the matter, had a
meeting at the Mulberry Street Methodist
parsonage.
A full and free discussion of the sub-
jert was had, and it was determined to lo
cate the monument in the yard of St.
Luke’s Church, of Columbus. This
church was for some years under the pas
toral care of Dr. Pierce, and of it and its
people he was very fond. Around the
building is quite an extensive yard, beau
tifully arranged with trees. They were
set out by the Doctor, and while in Co-'
luinbus they were his especial cate, mak
ing the place, from association with his
life, a suitable and appropriate one for
the memorial monument. Appeals will
be made at once, and it is thought
there will be no difficulty in re
alizing an amount sufficiently large to
erect an appropriate cenotaph to the mem
ory of the distinguished dead.
OFF THE TEACH.
Twelve Cars off the Ralls and Focr
Badly Smashed.
The down night passenger train from
Atlanta did not arrive in the city yester
day until two o’clock in the afternoon.
The delay was occasioned by an accident
which occerred to the up night through
freight, No. 8, which leaves Macon at 9:15
o’clock at night. The point at which the
accident occurred was about two and a
half miles below Milner, near the forty-six
mile post. The engine and several of the
cars passed sa y over the rails when one
of them broke, throwing a portion of the
train off the track, and causing the piling
up of four boxes in a promiscuous heap and
ditching eight others. The wrecked cats
were piled promiscuously across the track.
Tins occurred about one o’clock yester
day morning. Signal men were immedi
ately put oni, and every precaution taken
to avoid any further disaster.
The engineer, Edward Graves, took the
engine and si a. tad for Atlanta. At Forest
Station the cons iuci : on train was met
and sent to the scene of the disaster, and
the engine pi oecedcd on to Atlanta, giving
notice of the wreck to the officials of the
load.
The woik ofelea ring the I . ack was com
menced as soon as practicable, and con
cluded yeste'tfty at eleven o’clock. In
the meantime I he passenger train for Ma
con was delayed. The up day passenger
of yertculry was slightly delayed, hut
probably reached Atlanta on time. The
amount of the damage is estimated at
from fifteen hundred to two thousand dol
lars. Four of‘he care were veiy badly
wrecked, and the others damaged more or
less. The cab was not involved in the
wreck, and further than a severe jolting
up, its occupants sustained no injury from
the aii ident. The mails, both Northern
and Western, were delayed. Regular
schedules were i e.-umed along the line by
the outgoing trains I art evening.
Tliepassengore are under obligY.’oas to
Captain A. J. Yvliite, of Milner, w ho, up
on liearirg of the accident not long after
it occurred, drove to the scene and insis
ted upon all on the train or connected
therewith, accepting his hospitality.
A similar tender was made to all on
hoard of the down night passenger, and
yesiei day morning a very bountiful break
fast was spread for passengers and road
employees, and they were loud in their
praises of his hospitality.
General Dec’s Birthilny.
To-monow is the anniversary of the
birth of General Robert E. Lee. Two of
the volunteer companies of tb»State will
commemorate the occasion by a public
parade. In addition the Floyd Rifles will
engage in a taiget practice at the Park.
We hope that the members of both com
panies will make displays creditable to
themselves and such as will be In keeping
with the event. The day should be ob
served by appropriate demonstrations all
over the South, and la the Southern coun
try it should be made a holiday, and plac
ed on the same footing as the 22d of Feb
ruary.

the eminent tragedian, John McCullough,
will commence to-morrow morning at 9

Homicide In Houston County.
We learn from the Peivy Uome-Jouvnd

county last week, in which John Eelviu
killed Jane Belvin. Two small negioos
were fighting, when the two darkies
named took their pari. Jane shuck John
with a stick, and he .tabbed her in the
body, from which she died in an hour.
Jane Belvin was abont fifteen yeais of
age, and the hoy who did the killing about
twelve. He has been arrested, and is in
jail. He is a very small boy to life age,
and seems to he a had one. viewing his

—Oen part. of General McClellan’s
message, as Governor of New Jersey,
read in the Legislature in Trenton on
Tuesday, shows that, unlike General
Grant, he is flee from the Napoleonic doc
trine of military rule. He says, in effect,
.that he wonld rather see the State militia
abolished than yield its control to the
general government, and advises opposi
tion to any unconstitutional encroach
ment upon the freedom of the National
Guard of New Jersey. Certainly Gov
ernor McClellan, irrespective of his parly
affiliations, can have no sympathy wiih
third termers and imperialists.
—Rye straw is as valuable as the grain
