-Increase: in Valuations in Kew
Vork.—The preliminary taxable valua
tions of New York real estate for 1880,
just completed by the assessors, show ah
increase for every ward in the city, rang
ing from $43,000 in the thirteenth to $0,-
3-IS,520 in the nineteenth ward. The ag
gregate increase is $28,183,417, or about
3 per oent on the valuations of last year.
The New York Times argues that, with
rigid economy and a reasonable reduc
tion of salaries, there is no reason why
taxation in that city should not in 1881
be 10 per cent, lower than the rate fixed
for this year.
—A Gentle Hint.—Dr. Busch, in lib
latest volume of Bismarckiana, tells an
extremely good story of a way the Chan
cellor has to rid himself of people who
stay too long. “You must have many
tiresome visits,” said Lord Odo Russell to
him one day when ho had called. How
do you manage to rid yourself of bores?”
“Oh, it is very easy’,’ replied Bismarck.
“My wife always knows the people I don’t
care to waste time over; and she invaria
bly comes in the most apropos manner to
disturb tlie interview.” Hardly had the
words left Bismarck’s lips whentlie.door
opened and the Princess appeared, and
gave a practical demonstration of the
system by remarking, after bowing to the
British Ambassador: “Pray, don’t forget,
dear Otto, that you have some medicine to
take to-day.”
—Hopes op an Early Adjournment
of Congress.—The Washington
respondent of the Richmond Dtspalch
says I have heretofore stated more than
once that the Democratic members of
Congress are anxious for an early adjourn
ment, and will do all in their power to
bring it about. Mr. Thurman remarked
to-day that the appropriation bills will be
rushed through, and that in a week or ten
days after their passage Congress will be
able to adjourn. Speaker Randall, in
conversation with a Southern senator to
day, predicted an early adjournment, and
said he was doing his' best at Ills end of
Congress to bring i^ about. The loth of
April is the day lie now fixes Ibr adjourn
ment, and will work to get through busi
ness by that day. The Republicans ex
press themselves as favorable to an early
adjournment. Matters are now going on
smoothly, but when exciting questions are
reached the appearance of things may
change.
The American The editor of the
London Whitehall Review, at a dinner,
recently, propounded the following ques
tion: “What is the origin of the sign for
the American dollar?” The American
Consul did not know. It was suggested
by one of the guests, upon the authority
of Notes and Queries, that the sign was
a sort of monogram of the United States,
from “U. S.” But this would not do.
The American dollar, says the editor, is
taken from the Spanish dollar, and the
sign is to be found, of course, in tlio asso
ciations of the Spanish dollar. We litter
ed the tables with books, in the course of
our researches, but I proved my point to
the end. On the reverse of the Spanish
dollar is a representation of the Pillars of
Hercules, and round each pillar is a
scroll, with the inscription, “Plus ■ultra.'''
This device, in the course of time, has
degenerated into the sign which stands at
present for American, as well as Spanish
dollars, This scroll round the pil
lars, I take, represents the t'wo serpents
sent by Juno to destroy Hercules in his
cradle.
—The Cleveland Jlerald, being asked
by a contemporary to state the grounds on
which it opposes the nomination of Gene
ral Grant, replies:
“The whole matter can be summed up
in a single explanation—because of the
danger of his being defeated. 'There is a
strong prejudice against a third term, and
the elaborate explanations that this would
not be a third continuous term, but some
thing very different, cannot remove this
prejudice’. Whether tills feeling is reason
able or unreasonable, logical or illogical,
has nothing to do with the matter. It ex
ists, and it must enter into the calcula
tions of Grant’s availability as a candi
date. There are other objections in some
quarters to Grant, growing out of the
history of his previous administration, but
tlie third-term consideration is sufficient
to place bis election in doubt, and in the
present political condition of the country
the Republican nominee mnst carry as lit
tle load as possible. It is far better for
Grant to be defeated at the convention,
than at the polls, for the Republican party
is infinitely greater than Grant, or any
other individual Republican, and its suc
cess of far more consequence.”
—Thinks Grant Would Stay in
for Life.—The New York Sun says
some people affect to ridicule the idea
that General Grant, if elected President
again, would insist on retaining, in some
form, the executive authority of the na
tion during the remainder of his life. By
the elaborate letter of Mr. Charles O’Con
nor, expressing very fully Ills political
sentiments, wliicb we published on Wed
nesday, it will be seen that he entertains
a different view. “It may fairly be sup
posed," he says, “that if General Grant
should once again occupy the executive
chair he will hold it during life.” These
are Mr. O’Connor’s own words.
The way we reason upon the subject is
tills: By the mere act of grasping at a
third term General Grant shows that be
is lacking in all that reverence for great
examples and for traditions endeared by
'•ong observance to the hearts of the peo
ple, which, of themselves, have been found
sufficient to control the actions of other
men similarly situated. This proves him
to be an ambitious, selfish man, above
all the Presidents that have gone before
him; and it seems to ns unreasonable to
expect that a man wholly wanting in re
gard for tills unwritten article of our sys ;
tern will very scrupulously observe the
written constitution and form of govern
ment.
We are very much inclined to think
that Mr. O’Connor’s apprehension would
turn out to be well founded.

Tbe Pierce Monument.
The movement for the erection of a
monument to the late Dr. Pierce meets
with encouragement and favor on all
sides. The place selected for the loca
tion of it is the church yard of St. Luke’s
Church, Columbus. While Macon would
perhaps have been abetter place, being
th« centre of the State in which his great
life work was done, Columbns, as the
arena of some of his noblest achievements
in the service of his Master, is an appro
priate place. The Columbns Times,
speaking ot the location, says:
It is a lovely place, one of the most
beautiful churchyards in the South and
a fit place to erect the monument to the
memory of this father in Israel. While
tlie trees were planted by Dr. J. S. Key,
at that time a junior preacher, the work
was done under the direction of Dr.
Pierce. While immediate steps will he
taken to raise tlie desired amount of funds,
it is hoped that an opportunity will be
given his friends in North Carolina* where
lie was born, and in South Carolina,
•where He was raised, to donate to its
erection. ' ,
We trust that a large amount will be
raised to enable the committee to erect a
monument which will be worthy of the
subject it is to commemorate.
