A Barbarian King Sets a Good Ex
ample to the People of Christian
America.
Hint: Kalakaua, of the Sandwich Is
lands, defends his people from being re
sponsible for the decrease of population in
the Islands. His majesty speaks favora
bly of the rule ot the old aristocracy iu
his country, and charges former oppres
sion to the priesthood with their exactions
and taboos.
While admitting the good work accom
plished by the missionaries, he still says
they have injured the health of the Is
lands.
Writing to the New York Nation, “the
one great object of the work of the in-
stmetors of onr pupils,” remarks the king,
• was to save tneir souls from perdition;
they left the human clay to rot. The er
ror, if you may call it so,'seems to put a
blot upon the whole good that lias been
done by the missionaries.” Kalakaua be
lieves that the return of general prosperity
and the amalgamation of races will yet
renovate his people. lie does not dread
nor oppose the influx of the Chinese, but
savs that the race have the right of asy
lum, and he is glad to see them earning
good wages. “1 look at the matter in its
broad sense," says this liberal King, “and
not at one particular class and race of
men. I wotdd there were twenty mil
lions more of them. They are a peacea
ble race and easily governed.”
The hoodlums of San Francisco would
do well to imitate the liberality and good
sense of King Kalakaua.
Horrible.
Some districts of Russia have been al
most decimated by diphtheria of late. It
is recorded as a fact that one cause of this
great mortality grows out of the fact that
the peasantry are iu the habit of inserting
bread into the mouth of the person just
dead and giving it tojthc children, in order
to “inoculate” \hern against the disease,
