Several planters below Augusta have
suffered an entire loss of their wheat crop
by the freshet in the Savannah river.
Never cry over spilt milk, ten to one
there’s water enough in it already.
Last Friday the boiler of the locomo
tive, Honesty, drawing the passenger train
on the Mobile and Girard Railroad, burst
when near Huntsville. No one was in
jured.
The - Recorder tells us that a cyclone
passed Sumter county recently, which de
molished numerous buildings and leveled
fences and trees which were in its path.
Mr. J. >. StUbbs had his dwelling house
"proofed and ids barn, cribs and other
Itbuildings . destroyed. Several others
id their fences blown down and consid-
nble damage done to growing crops.
It is suspected that the negro woman
ho died so suddenly a few days ago in
olumbus, was poisoned by her husband.
He has left the city, and his whereabouts
is now unknown.
A romantic Columbus youth, a few
days since, wrote to a young lady asking
her to “meet him by moonlight alone.”
She gave the note to her father, who was
goffering with a very had cold. He read
it “beat him by moonlight alone.” And
he did so—by request. .
Rev. Dr. Teasdaee lias been holding
an interesting series of meetings in Au-
S ista. He has left for his home. The
aptist ministry of tlie city continue the
services.
Bishop H. H. Kavanaugh, of the M.
£. Church South, is in Augusta assisting
Rev. W. II. Laprade in a series of relig
ious services in St. Johns Methodist
church.
The branch railroad mania has reached
Dublin, I.aurens county. A preliminary
survey is now decided on between Dublin
and Teiinille, on the Central Road. If Mr.
\Vadley builds all the branches demand
ed, he will have no time to watch Joe
Brown and Victor Newcomb.
An effort was made recently to place
the Whisky tax in Dublin to $5,000. The
City Council remembered the source from
whence they received their supplies, and
promptly voted it down.
Immense loss of stock resulted from the
freshet. A steamboat passing up the Oco
nee river encountered many carcasses of
hogs, cattle and sheep, that had been
drowned.
The Albany Advertiser says:
Never such flattering prospects for a
good crop year before known even by “the
oldest inhabitant.”
Also the following:
We learn from a reliable -source that
a little boy on returning from a hunting
expedition Wednesday evening found lii3
little sister, three years of age, fretting
and crying, and gave her his gun to quiet
her. In attempting, afterwards, to take
the gun from the child, it was accident
ally discharged, the contents entering and
ailing a little girl about eleven years old.
’he lit t ie victim was so horribly'mangled
t to c - use her entrails to protrude. She
ved about three-quarters of an hour af-
- ir the gun was fired. All the parties are
llored, and lived out at Judge L. P. D.
farren’s place, about four miles south
of the city. *
A Spec ial from Atlanta to the Even
ing Newt: About 11 o’clock last night,
the guard at the Capitolsmelling fumes of
something burning, searched and found
that it issued from the State Treasury
room. Jle broke open the front door and
found the smoke issuing from a hole for
ventilation near the top of the vault.
The clerks in tLe departments sleeping
in the building were notified quickly, and
Mrs. Colquitt was telepboned.andslie sent
a messenger for Treasurer Renfroe. The
two holes for ventilation were closed witii
paper. When Mr. Renfroe arrived with
the keys to the vault he opened the doors
and a bucket of water was dashed on the
fire, which was extinguished. Eighteen
hundred and forty-two dollars was in an
iron safe in the vault, but nothing of value
was injured in the least. Some of the old
Augier vouchers were charred, also some
pick ages of cancelled Macon and Bruns
wick railroad money, and some old bonds
of the same railroad. The fire was on the
shelving on the north side of the vault.
The fire is a mystery, but is supposed to
have been caued by mice biting matches.
Savannah Morning News: It is a
well known fact that many frivolous and
malicious prosecutions have occurred in the
Southern District of Georgia, and that
parties in neghboring counties have been
arrested on the most trivial charges, tom
from their homes at a time when their ab
sence is a serious loss, and brought to
Savanuah, to be carried before some
United States Commissioner. In many
cases these charges have beed found so
frivolons that the parties have been imme
diately dismissed. If the parties have been
bound over for appearance before the Uni
ted States Courts the District Attorney,
after investigation, has, in numerous in-.
Stances, directed a nolle proseque to he
entered, and the defendants have b«en
subjected to expense and inconvenience
for nothing. This state of affairs will he
changed now, and hereafter we will have
Jess of these frivolous prosecutions or per
secutions. This, In consequence of the
following order lately issued by Hon.
WilUam B. Woods, Judge of the Fifth
United States Judicial Circuit, and Hon.
John Krskine, Judge United States Dis
trict Courts:
“Ordered by the court, That the use of
criminal information be, and the same is,
hereby prohibited in this court, except as
g rovided In section 1023 of the Revised
tatutes, and that the mode of procedure
hereafter be exclusively by bill of indict
ment, except as provided in 1022 of the
Revised Statutes.
“Ordered, further, That the above order
is not to apply to cases now pending, but
to the filiug of information iu future.”
The Athens Chronicle says:
A small colored boy, named’Robert
Parks, about twelve years old, was sent
to the chain gang the other day from the
City Court, for a carrying a pistol con
cealed.
The American Union Telegraph Com
pany is going to establish an office in Au

Amkkicus Recorder:.- On to-morrow
morning the work of removing the re
mains of the Confederate dead from An-
dersonviile will be commenced. One
hundred and twenty-three heroes who
gave their lives for an undying principle,
lie neglected and dishonored without the
walls of the National Cemetery at Andar-
sonville; a burning shame to the govern
ment official of this Department, who
gave us to understand that these graves
were to bo enclosed and protected with
those of the Union soldiers, and uncere
moniously left them out when the walls
were built.
We visited Oak Grove Cemetery on
yesterday and inspected the newly made
graves ready for the reception .of the
bodies. There are one hundred and
twenty-three of them, situated just west
of and contigious to the soldiers’ quarter.
This work has been under the supervision
of Mr. John Windsor, in whose praise too
much cannot he said.
The Savannah News contains a notice
of the funeral of Mr. A. W. Silva, a prin
ter, formerly connected with the Neics:
The deceased was a native of St. Ma
ry’s, Georgia, hut had resided in Savan
nah since early boyhood, and during the
late war served as a faithful, tried soldier,
witii the Chatham Artillery. 7
Tire funeral services were conducted by
the Rev. J. O. Brandt, of Wesley Monu
mental church. The pall bearers were
Messrs. T. J. McXish and George Turner,
of the Chatham Artillery and Messrs. B.
