THE GEORGIA PRESS.
Several planters below Augusta have
suffered an entire loss of their wheat crop
by the freshet in the Savannah river.
Never cry over spilt milk, ten to one
there’s water enough in it already.
Last Friday the boiler of the locomo
tive, Honesty, drawing the passenger train
on the Mobile and Girard Railroad, burst
when near Huntsville. No one was m-
jured.
The Recorder tells us that a cyclone
passed Sumter county recently, which de
molished numerous buildings and leveled
fences and trees which were in its path.
Mr. J. A. Stubbs had his dwelling house
'vroofed and his bam, cribs and other
^buildings destroyed. Several others
»d their fences blown down and consid-
fcble damage done to growing crops.
It is suspected that the negro woman
fco died so suddenly a few days ago in
olumbus, was poisoned by her husband.
He has left the city, and his whereabouts
Is now unknown.
A noMAXTio Columbus youth, a few
days since, wrote to a young lad/ asking
her to “meet him by moonlight alone.”
She gave the note to her father, who was
suffering with a very had cold. He read
it “beat him by moonlight alone.” And
lie did so- by request.
Rev. Dr. TkasdAi.e has been holding
an interesting series of meetings in Au
gusta. He has left for his home. The
Baptist ministry of the city continue the
services.
Biswor H. H. Kavaxacgh, of the M.
E. Church South, is in Augusta assisting
Rev. W. II. Laprade in a series of relig
ious - ,:rvices in St. Johns Methodist
church.
The branch railroad mania has reached
Dublin, Laurens county. A preliminary
survey is now decided on between Dublin
and Tennillc, on the Central Road. If Mr.
Wadley builds all the branches demand
ed, lie will have no time to watch Joe
Brown and Victor Newcomb.
An effort was made recently to place
the whisky tax in Dublin to S3,000. The
City Council remembered the source from
whence they received their supplies, and
promptly voted it down.
Immense loss of stock resulted from the
freshet. A steamboat passing up the Oco
nee river encountered many carcasses of
hogs, cattle and sheep, that had been
drowned.
Tue Albany Advertiser says:
Never such flattering prospects for a
good crop year before known even by “the
oldest inhabitant.”
Ar.so the following:
We learn from a reliable source that
a little boy ou returning from a hunting
expedition Wednesday evening found liis
little sister, three years of age, fretting
and crying, and gave her his gun to quiet
her. In attempting, afterwards, to take
the gun from the child, it was accident
ally discharged, the contents entering and
illing a lit tle girl about eleven years old.
lie little victim was so horribly mangled
i to rause her entrails to protrude. She
ved about three-quarters of an hour af-
Ir the gun was fired. All the parties are
)lored, and lived out at Judge L. P. D.
Tamm's place, about four miles south
of the city.
A Special from Atlanta to the Even
ing News: About 11 o’clock last night,
the guard at the Capitol smelling fumes of
something burning, searched and found
that It issued from the State Treasury
room. lie broke open the front door and
found the smoke issuing from a hole for
ventilation near the top of the vault.
The clerks in the departments sleeping
.in the building were notified quickly, and
Mrs. Colquitt was telepboned.andshe sent
a messenger for Treasurer Renfroe. The
.two holes for ventilation were closed with
.paper. When Mr. Renfroe arrived with
dire keys to the vault he opened the doors
•and a bucket of water was dashed on the
foe, which was extinguislred. Eighteen
hundred and forty-two dollars was in an
iron safe in the vault, but nothing of value
rwa* injured in the least. Some of the old
fiiigier vouchers were charred, also some
packages of cancelled Macon and Bruns
wick railroad money, and some old bonds
rat' the same railroad. The fire was on the
shelving ou the north side of the vault.
The fire is a mystery, but is supposed to
have been caned by mice biting matches.
Savannah Morning Metes: It is a
weli known fact that many frivolous and
nialidousprosecutious have occurred in the
Southern District of Georgia, and that
parties in ueghhoring counties have been
arrested on the most trivial charges, tom
from tlieir homes at a time wbeu their ab
sence is a serious loss, and brought to
Savannah, to be ‘carried before some
United States Commissioner. In many
cases these charges have beed found so
frivolous that the parties have been imme
diately dismissed. If the parties have been
beuud over for appearance before the Uni
ted States Courts the District Attorney,
after investigation, lias, in numerous in
stances, directed a nolle prosequetobe
entered, and the defendants have been
subjected to expense and Inconvenience
for nothing. This state of affairs will be
changed now, and hereafter we will have
less of these frivolous prosecutions or per
secution*. This, in consequence of the
following order lately issued by Hon.
William B. Woods, Judge of the Fifth
United States Judicial Circuit, and Hon.
John Erskine, Judge United States Dis
trict Courts:
“Ordered by the court, That the use of
criminal information be, and the same is,
hereby prohibited in this court, except as
provided in section 1023 of the Revised
Statutes, and that the mode of procedure
hereafter be exclusively by bill of indict
ment, except as provided in 1022 of the
Revised Statutes.
“Ordered, further, That the above order
Is not to apply to cases now pending, but
to the filing of information in future.”
The Athens Chronicle says:
A small' colored boy, named ^Robert
Parks, about twelve years old,' was sent
to the chain gang the other day from the
City Court, for a carrying a pistol com
cealed.
The American Union Telegraph Com
pany is going to establish an office in Au

Amekicus Recorder: On to-morrow
morning the work of removing the re
mains of the Confederate dead from An-
dersbnvill<* will be commenced. One
hundred .. id twenty-three heroes who
gavo tlieir jives for an. undying principle,
lie neglected and dishonored without the
walls of the National Cemetery at Ander
son villc; a burning shame to the govern
ment official of this Department, who
gave iis to understand that these graves
were to be enclosed and protected with
thuc of the Union soldiers, and uncere
moniously left them out when the walls
were built.
We visited Oak Grove Cemetery on
yesterday and inspected the newly made
ves rcaay for the reception of the
iaal
bodies. There are one hundred and
twenty-three of them, situated just west
of and coutigious fo the soldiers’ quarter.
This work has been under the supervision
of Mr. John Windsor, in whose praise too
much cannot be said.
The Savannah Metes contains a notice
of the funeral of Mr. A. W. Silva, a prin
ter, formerly connected witli the Metes:

with tbo Chatham Artillery.
