Masonic Hull.
Hundreds of citizens who were present
at the children’s carnival last night had
an opportunity to judge of the elegance of
the work recently done by Mr. Ed. Irvine,
in changing Masonic Hall into an Opera
House, and many were the compliments
showered upon our amateur scene painter
in this, his first effort.
The south end of the hall has been
changed to a stage front, the wings of
which bear each an elegant design on
wall paper, scarcely distinguishable from
fresco painting. These wings rest
upon two beautiful columns which
unite In their shapes the Moorish and
Corinthian styles, and support the arched
point. The village scene represents a
street leadirg straight back, the line of
houses to the right and left, converging to
ward an excellent reproduction of our
court house. On the left in the fore
ground, is an old market house and on the
right a dwelling. This picture is as near
perfect as any stage scenery we have ever
examined; the houses ardft ell proportion
ed, the narrowing street is produced with
great effect and all the lines of the per-
pective are correct.
The garden scene is more elaborate.
The steps of a bidden residence lead
down from the right. Upon the pillar at
the end of the balustrade, is a marble urn
of flowers, and through the rail can be
seen a grove of fir. The garden, stretcli-
ed in front, is laid off in flower beds with
hedges. Away in the rear is seen the dis
tant village, with the sun setting behind
a line of golden clouds. The whole is a
beautiful design, and reflects great credit
upon the youthful artist.
This scenery is intended to be used in
tho opera Sorcerer, now being rehearsed
hv the Harmonic Society.
Personal.
Captain John Green Brown, of Hous
ton county, was in the city yesterday, and
reports that in the vicinity of Hayneville
the oat crop is promising, wheat utterly
ruined with the rust, corn stand good and
prospects cheering. Cotton planting has
just commenced, more mules bought than
ever known before, and the supply of la
bor ample.
