How Ws Used to be Physicked.—Who does Dot remember the time when spring purgation waa considered indispensable to eammcr hea’th ? No matterfor wry faces, the inevitable salts and senna, rhubarb, or calomel and jalap, must be administer ed. These “spring medicines,” the youngsters were told, were to keep them hide and hearty dar ing the summer. We all know now that this was a falacy; that new vigor, not depletion, is what is re quired at the commencement of the summer sol stice. As a preparation for the enervating effects of oppressive summer weather, a course of Hos tetler's Stomach Bitters is highly expedient. This famous vegetable preparation has three prominent properties: It renovates, purifies, and regulates all the functions of the'body. It is composed ex- elm, etc. | clusively of pure vegetable productions, viz: the essential principle of Monongahela Rye, and the most efficacious tonic and alterative roots, barks, and gums known to medical botanists. Hence, it is an absolutely safe medicine, and no tincture of the Pharmacopoeia can compare with it either in purity, or in the variety of ite object, and ite com prehensive results. The Festival.—Notwithstanding the threat* enlng looks of the clouds, and the light rain that fell about 8 o’clock last night, the ladies’ festival and supper in Ayres’ Hall was well at tended and the receipts satisfactory to the management, considering the inclemency of the weather. The hall was handsomely decor ated, and, during the few moments we were present, the company appeared to be enjoying themselves in fine style. The supper was really elegant, and we venture to assert that a better one, for fifty cents, conld not be procured here or elsewhere in the country. The ladies hav ing it in charge wi!’ jve visitors another chance at it from4 till 10 p. it., this evening, and we urge all to go and get a moBt sumptuous repast for a trifling sum, and at the same time aid the ladies in “lifting” a small debt from their splen did church organ, which is a credit to the city and the church in which it is used. of’House Farthing Good; always philosophical doctrine, that vigor is thegreat 1 antagonist of disease, has taken its place. Strange, The Bbown House.—Although we are now passing through the dullest season of the year, yet it would appear from the register of this popular and really magnificent hotel, that it is now doing as fine a business as at any season. Indeed, one addition after another, as experi ence suggested, has been added to the establish ment, until there is really nothing wanting to make it all that any one could desire in the way of a hotel, and hence nearly everybody visiting the city stops there. It is creditable alike to the city and State, and particularly so to the en terprising gentlemen who have, by years of zealous labor and good management, made it what it is. The Mania yob Advertising.—Every old fanco, wall and post about the city tells yon to take somebody’s bitters, somebody’s pills or somebody’s cordial, whether yon are sick or not. Bat neither bitters, pills or cordials will cure rheumatism. If yon have that horrible disease, and wish a enre, call at the drag store of-Dr. I. L. New Feature.—Messrs Beck & Small have added another attraction to their neat little ci gar stand in the lobby of the postoffice, in the shape of a soda water fountain, which dispenses as cool and invigorating a beverage as can be found in the city. We are pleased to note this evidence of prosperity on the part of this yonng and enterprising firm, and hope ere long to chronicle the fact that they will build them a large business house of their own and ran it on a heavy schedule. The sentence of death imposed npon Cre- mienx by the Court Martial at Marsailles will probably be commuted. The work of rejuvenating Paris is progress ing. Fully CO,000 masons are engaged in re pairing the damaged buildings and erecting new ones. The city is also being thoroughly disinfected. The journals of Paris and Versailles express satisfaction at the success of the review at Long Champs. A circular of Rouker to the electors affirms he is the defender of the principles of free trade. In relation to the future form of gov ernment, the nation must decide upon it, after - the elections have been held and the question of free trade has been decided upon. He de nounces the opponents of this policy as mere factionists. The speech of Gambetta at Bordeaux was upon tbo subjeot of developments of education in France, and was received with hearty ap proval and great applause. The Official Journal, commenting on the re view at LoDg Champs, remarks as follows: “We have shown Europe an army one hundred thou sand strong, valorous and ably commanded, which has saved the cause of civilization. We have also called for two millions of money and been offered five millions. The nation evi dently recovers.” St. Johns, N.
