mm*mm i. r i'm ■,r ■>irrTgrwn>MWin Telegraph. & Messenger. SUNDAY MORNING, JULY 2. 1871. Sonnet From tlie Portugese. Bay over again and yet over again, That thou doet love me. Though the word repeated Should eoem a “cuckoo” eong, as thou doet treat it, Remember, never to the hill or plain, Valley and wood without her cuckoo strain, Comes the froth spring in all her green comploted. Darling, I, amid the darkness greeted By a doubtful spirit-voice, in that doubt's pain Cry: “Speak once more—thou lovest!” Who can fear, Too many stars, though each in heaven shall roll— Too many flowers, though each shall crown the year ? Siy thou dost love me, love me, love me—toll The silver iterance!—only minding, dear, To love mo also in silence, with thy eoul. GRINNING AND REARING IT. Southern SclM.'ontrol Mast Solve the Po litical Problem of the Fntnre—Another Practical, Common Sense letter fro* n John Q,nincy Arinins. The Augusta (Arkansas) Bulletin of lb« 21th inst., publishes a letter from John Qnincy Adams to the editor of that paper, in which he says: I feel shy of speaking to yon or a«y citizen of the “subject States.” I dislike t» earn the re tort—“Oh, it is very easy to prefab 5 but, suffer as we have, and then tell ns h~> w y°i feel and we will listen.” I do try to t*«e it home to my self ; and I do not donbt in similar cir cumstance, I should be to dfl y a ° “unrepentant rebel”—sore, angTy, be«ten and defiant. And, with me, it would doubtless have been as it has been with yon, that ‘the tender mercies of re construction had peen harder to bear than all the horrors of invasive war.” I shonld have been galled byiuisgovemmont, robbed by im ported knavo-y of the pittance which the war had sparedexasperated by willful and persis tent misr'presentation, and cruelly condemned to hopetss impotence for tho imputed guilt of cowarAy crimes I abhorred. I should have been-xmdomned, too,to hold my personal liberty at *ae nod of a morconary carpet-bagger or tho wdim of a military satrap. I say that I fear Z should have been an “irreconcilable.” In suoh a case, I think I shonld be sulky; but I know I shonld bo silly if I yielded to tho feeling. For, whence must my relief come, if my last estate is not to become worse than the first ? Is there a man ontside an asylnm who thinks that by such a course tho “lost cause” can bo re gained? By whom, then? If by the North, believe me that the experiment of secession tas satis fied all that no cause is worth a civil war. That war has confirmed, beyond a shadow of a turn ing, the destiny which decreed that there shall bo bnt one confederated people of the North American Union. No. Rebellious I might be; but weak enough to await the resurrection I do not think I could be. Yon and I and your friends and neighbors and mine are of one blood; we were once “fellow-citizens,” and the old time kindness must linger yet, in spots. Our fathers were “brethren,” and that must count for something. The whole political problem of the future turns npon the an swer to tho question—“shall wo live to gether as friends or enemies?” Now, the whole internal policy of the present admin istration says war. Reconstruction vreant war, and tho Ku-klox bill declared war. This Union is now held together by forco. Certainly, if this is to be permanent, it would have been bet ter to have parted at first. If the straggle to cast ontslavory overthrow the Constitution, what chance is thero for a “free” government if the North is to rnlo the Sonth ? South Carolina is to-day tho most shameless parody on republican institutions since republican Rome bestrode all the nations of the ancient world, put the sword to their throats, stripped them bare, and then looked words to laud the loveliness of liberty. You cannot bo subject, and we be long free. The untrammelled exorcise of local self-govern ment by the peoplo of the States is the salt which preserves our whole system. Take that away and onr frame of polity will rapidly rot into des potism. Therefore, it is that, not as a partisan, but wholly as a fellow-citizen, I trust that all the good citizens of the seceded States will frankly nccepttherevolntionarychangeswhichhavebeen forced npon tho Constitution, and with them cheerfully adopt the new relations of amity and political and civil equality toward the eman cipated class which these changes involvo.— And, therefore, I am glad when I see the noble spirit of yonr letter pervading the Southern people a3 it doos, despite tho malignity of a ; rtisan press; while tho sterling sonso of Mr. v.iUandigham has reformed the Northern Dem ocracy. And it maltors not what man may be chosen to load us. so long as his heart is large enough to hold his whole country; his soul bravo enough to embrace a Confederate as a rothor, and his platform wide enough for every American citizen to stand upon. To compass i bis end something of sacrifice is required of us all; mueh of self-control is demanded of the South. You and ail I hear assure me that the i.ltempt will be made; and if made honestly and in earnest, it cannot fail. R, R. R. MDIAY’S READY RELIEF! CUBES THE WORST PAINS IN FROM ONE TO TWENTY MINUTES. This wonderful mechanical achievement- in point of RAPIDITY and LIGHTNESS of DRAUGHT, STANDS WITHOUT A RIVAL, and is destined at an early day to supersede ALL OTH ER Cotton Screws, be they fabricated of Wrought or Cast Iron. We append certificates of several well- known planters, using the “ECLIPSE PRESS”: Colaparchee, Ga.. December 21,1870. II. FINDLAY’S SONS, Findlay’s Iron Works, Macon, Ga.: Dkak Sms: Late this fall I purchased from you one of your Pindlay & Craig Eclipse Patent Screw Oottlm Presses, and, after a full and fair trial, do not hesitate to pronounce it the most rapid, of light est draught, most powerful—in fact, the best (without an exception) Cotton Press I ever saw. Between this and all other Don Screw Presses I have ever seen or used, there is jnst simply no comparison. Every planter shonld use your Press. JOHN L. GILBERT. P. S.—Yon may consider my order in for two more of the above Presses for next season, and may look for many orders from this section ; my neighbors aro determined to have them, as they can pack by hand twice as fast as any of the other Iron Screw Presses can by horse power. J. L. G. Bibb County, Ga., November 25,1870. B. FINDLAY’S SONS: Gentlemen : I bought one of your Eclipse Screw Cotton Presses early the present season, and have pressed nearly tho whole of my cotton crop with it, and so far ithas given entire satisfaction. I am well pleasod with it and think it a good Press, and an improvement upon any und all other Presses now in use. JOHN J. RILEY. Wooten, Ga., January 4,1871. Messes. B. FINDLAY’8 SONS: Deab Sins: In reply to yours of yes terday, I have to say that the Eclipse Cotton Screw, purchased of yon, has performed admirably; I like it better than any screw I have ever used. Yours, very truly, G. M. STOKES. Since last fall, and before accepting Patent, we added improvemenls and labor-saving conveniences— rendering it PERFECT in every particular. This screw, or pin, has a pitch, or fall, of 6% inches ; that is, at every turn of the screw, follower block descends (or ascends, as the case may be) 6)^ inches. The device of the tube or nut in which the screw works, is such as to materially reduce the friction, so great in the common screw ; thereby rendering it an easy task for three hands to pack a bale of cotton in HALF THE TIME of ANY OTHER Iron Screw Press by horse-power. [See J. L. Gilbert’s certifi cate). When desirable, an ordinary mule can be substituted for three men without change of fixtures. (ScrewPresses also arranged for water and steam power). We claim for the “ECLIPSE” SIMPLICITY, STRENGTH, DURABILITY, RAPIDITY. LIGHT DRAUGHT, and STANDING BOOM at top of box, etc., etc.; in short, tre pronounce it the BEST Screw Prees IN THE WORLD, and respectfully invite a fancy. To parties who may not desire such rapidity in packing, we can supply them with the COMMON WROUGHT IRON 8CREW of fine (slow) pitch, and warrant them equal to any other Wrought Screw m&nuf actnred. Bnt above all others we recommend the strong, rapid, light draught “ECLIPSE.” Send for price list, etc. CRAIG’S PATENT DORSE POWER, poh. DH.X'P’iNra- cotton cs-iktss. FOR GINNING COTTON. CRAIG’S HORSE POWER is as far in advance of the ordinary Gin Gear as the ordinary Gin Gear is in advance of ALL THE OTHER HORSE POWERS now advertised and manufactured in the State. We are WILLING and ANXIOUS to PROVE this, if allowed an opportunity of a PUBLIC TEST. The above Horse Fower has proven, by actual test, to bo the most simple, durable, economical, and of lightest draught, of any Horse Power yet introduced to the public.
