MiMUHiren Maladies.—Tho hot solar rays that
ripen the harvoet gonorato many distressing dis
eases. If tho liver bo at all predisposed to irregu
larities, this is the season in which billions attacks
may be anticipated. A weak stomach, too, is
weakest in the summer months, and the loss of vi
tality through tho pores by excessive perspiration
is so great, that a wholesome tonic, combining also
tbe properties of a diffusive stimulant and gentle
exhilarant, is, in many cases, necessary to health,
and under no circumstances Bbonld be dispensed
with by the sickly and debilitated. Of all the prep
arations intended thus to refresh, bus tain, and for
tify tho human frame, there is none that will com
pare with Hostetter’s Celebrated Stomach Bitters.
They have been weighed in the balance of experi
ence and not fonnd wanting; have been recom
mended from tbe first as a great medicinal spocific,
not as a beverage, and in spite of interested oppo
sition from innumerable quarters, stand, after &
twenty years’ trial, £t the head of all proprietary
medidenes intended for the prevention and core of
all ordinary complaints of tho stomach, tho liver,
tbe bowels, and the nerves. In tho unhealthy dis
tricts bordering the great rivers of the South and
Weet, Hostetter’s Bitters may bo classed as the
standard one for every spedea of intermittent or
remittent fever. The people who inhabit those dis
tricts, place the moat implicit confidence in tho
preparation—a confidence that is increased every
year by the reenlts of its operation.
As bitters, so called, of tho most pornidons
character, are springing up like fangi on every
side, tbe pnblic is hereby forewarned against the
dram-ebop frauds. Ask for Hostetter’s Bitters
see that tbe label, etc., are correct, and remember
that the genuine artide is never sold in bulk, but in

CONSUMPTION.
Its Cure and Its Preventive.
By .T. H. SOHENCK, M. IX
M ANY a human being has passed away, for whose
d.-arh there was no other reason than the neglect
»f lie,tun and indisputably proven means of cure,
lb, senear and dear to family and lriends aresleep-
i~i tho dreamless slumber into which, had they calmly
adopted
DR. JOSEPH IT. SCHENCK’S SIMPLE
TREATMENT.
13i availed themselves of bis wonderful efficacious
medicines, they would not have fallen. Dr. Schenck
has in his own ease proved that wherever sufficient
nulity ronjains that vitality, by his medicines and
hi) direction# for their uso, is quickened into health
ful viior.
la ibis statement there is nothing presumptuous.
To the faith of the invalid ia made no representation
list it not a thousand times substantiated by living
atl risible works. The theory of the cure by Dr.
h henrh V medicines is as simple as it is unfailing,
lu philosophy requires no argument. It is self-
Ktirrar. self convincing. .
Th« ooawood Tonic and Mandrake Pills are the first
leoseiptins with which the citadel of the malady is
wiled. Two-thirds of the eases of consumption
iruiuat* in dyspepsia and a functionally disordered
liter. With this condition the bronchial tubes * sym-
Mlhiis" with the stomach. They respond to the
morbific setion of the liver. Here then comes the
ralxinsting result, and the setting in, with all its dis
tressing symptoms, of
CONSUMPTION.
TheMandrake Pills are composed ot one of Nature’s
soblest silts—tbe Podoiibillnm keltatum. They pos
it's tilths blood-searching, alterative properties of
titamtl. but unliko calomel, they
“LEAVE NO STING REMIND.”
The work of core is now beginning. The vitiated
ud mucous deposits in the bowols and in the ali-
aenurr canal are elected. The liver, like a dock, is
up. It arouses from its torpidity. The stom-
*ch acts responsively, and the patient begins to feel
that he is getting, at last.
A SUPPLY OF GOOD BLOOD.
The hcaweed Tonic, in conjunction with the Pills
permeates and auimilates witb the food. Chylifica-
tionii now progressing without its previous tortures,
htgoftion becomes painless, and the cure is seen to be
at hand. There is no more flatulence, no excel bation
of the stomach. An appetite setsin.
»o» comes the greatest Blood Purifier ever yet
pres by an indulgent father to suffering man.
hchesck a Pulmonic Syrup comes in to perform its
facetious and to hasten and complete the cure. It
esters at once upon its work. Nature cannot be
cheated. It collects and ripens the impaired and dis
eased portions of the lungs. In the form of gather-
tag). it prepares them for expectoration, and lo! in a
»err short time the malady is vanquished, the rotten
throne that it occupied ia renovated and made new,
aad the patient, in all the dignity of regained vigor,
etciu forth to enjoy the manhood or the womanhood
that was
GIVEN UP AS LOST.
Tht itcond thing is, tho patients must stay in a
warm room until they get well; it is almost impossi-
ols to prevent taking cold when the lungs are dis-
ea.«M, but it must be prevented or a cure cannot be
*«ct*4. Fresh air and riding out, especially in this
•ecuon of the country in tho fail and winter season,

Bad not sit down quiet: they must walk about tho
roomae much and aa faat at the strength will bear, to

Ibis has a great deal to do with the appetite, and is
‘“*, ,re at point to gain. To despair of cure alter such
evidence of in possibility in the worst eases, and
noral certainty in all others, is sinful. Dr. bebenok’s
personal statement to tho Faculty of his own cure

THE PAIN KILLER
May Justly bo atyled the great madicino of the
world, for there is no region of the globe into
which it haa not found its way,and boon largely need
and highly prized. Moreover, thcro is no clime to
which it has not proved to be well adapted for tbe
euro of a considerable varioly of diseases; it is
speedy and safe remedy for bums, scalds, cuts,
bruises, wounds and various other injuries, as well
as for dysentery, diarrhea and bowel complaints
generally, it is admirably snited for every race of
mon on tbe face of the globe.
It is a very significant fact, that notwithstanding
tbe long period of years that the

Has been before the world, it has never lost ono
whit of its popularity, but, on the contrary, the
call for it has steadily increased from its first dis
covery, and at no previous time has tho demand for
it been so great, or tho quantity made been so
large, as it is to-day.
Another significant fact is, that nowhere has tbe
Pain Killer ever been in higher repute, or been
moro generally used by families and individuals,
than it baa been here at home, where it was first
discovered and introduced. That tbe Pain Killer
will continue to be, what we have styled it,

CITY AFFAIRS.
TUESDAY MORNING. JULY 18, 1871.
No Night Telegrams.—The heavy storm of
last night prostrated the telegraph wires north
of this point, and wo are, therefore, without
our usual night telegrams and market reports
this morning.
Rain.—The city was visited last evening by
a most grateful shower of ram. It was accom
panied by a high wind and much vivid lightning.
It thorougly laid tho dost and cooled down tho
atmosphere to a delightful temperature os com
pared with what it had been for a week pre
vious.
Bad Boxs.—Several youngsters, both black
white, wont bathing in a pond near the city on
Sunday afternoon last, and to make the matter
still worse, got to fighting, and even used knives.
One of tho boys was cut severely bnt not dan
gerously. It occurred beyond the city limits,
or the Mayor would have taught them a lesson
yesterday. A sound switching would help all of
them more than a fine or imprisonment.
L O. O. F.—By a notice from It. \V. Grand
Scribe, John G. Deitz, it will be seen that tho
annual meeting of tho R. W. Grand Encamp
ment of the Independent order of Odd Fellows
will be held in Augusta, on Tuesday, the
1st day of August, and the annual meeting of
the E. W. Grand Lodge on Wednesday, the 2d.
Those attending these meetings will be passed
over tho different railroads by paying one faro
going.
Fine Teach.—The race track at the park will
bo fifty feet wide all around, except tho last
quarter, or “home stretch,” which will be G5
feet in width. The track was surveyed last week
by Major Gordon Gairdner, and was fonnd to
be nearly fifty yards short of a mile, and it has
been lengthened to the exact distance. It is as
level as a parlor floor, and when finished will bo
the track of the South.
Ice Manotaotobt.—Mr. Vaas is progressing
finely with the ice manufacturing establishment
he is putting np, just above the foot of Second
street, on tho river bank. The foundation has
all been laid, and it is the most singular looking
concern of the kind we ever saw. The machin
ery has not yet arrived, and there is some ap
prehensions of uneasiness about it, as the vessel
on which it was slipped has been over due more
than one week at Savannah.
Good Exercise.—Strange as it may seem to
those who know ns, it is, nevertheless, true, that
wo arose yesterday morning with the lark, and
ore the sun had tipped with gold the tops of the
eastern pines, we were strolling on the river
bank, inhaling the pure and fresh morning air,
and refreshing our senses with a scene we had
not witnessed since the reveille aroused us in
camp—we mean tho gorgeous glories of a sun
rise. While thU3 absorbed with our matutinal
musings, and tho beautiful landscape of earth
and sky spread ont before us, wo saw a boat
shoot out into the stream from the foot of
Second street, with a young friend pulling
lustily at the oars. Ho passed up stream and
near tho bank on which we were standing, and
kindly offered us a seat in his handsome little
•raft. Of course wo accepted it, and he gave
ns a nice ride of one mile up stream and back,
daring which, we learned, that it was his regu
lar custom to make the trip every morning, and
that since he had been thns exercising himself
his health and appetite had greatly improved,
and that he wa3 satisfied it was of more benefit
to him than all the doctors and apothecaries in
town. On returning to the boat honse, wo dis
covered that he was in a profuse perspiration,
and he immediately underwent a thorough rub
bing down, and clothing himself hurriedly, and
before his muscles could cool too qnickly, he
put out for homo, and wo followed.
It occurred to us that such exercise, at such
an hour, required both nerve and pluck, but
that it would make a live and healthy man of
anyone who would try it.
Good as Gbeznbaces.—If there is anybody
in Americas, or any other town of Georgia, too
“scary” to take Macon city money, let them
forward it to Mayor Huff, or C. J. Williamson,
City Treasurer, and have it exchanged for
greenbacks. It is a little inconvenient, it is
trne, to bandlo through tho banks, because they
are prohibited by law from receiving it; bnt it
is better secured than greenbacks and will be
redeemed, every dollar, to a dead and moral
certainty. Send it forward by the million, as
subscription for the Telegraph and Messenger.
' Why is It?—The various grocery firms that
have been closing doors at C p. sl, daring tho
last month, have abandoned their contract, or,
at least, they were all open until dark yestrday.
Why is it ? "Was anybody “toting” unfairly ?
Lost.—Sunday evening, in Mulberry street,

name on the inside. The finder will be kindly
rewarded by leaving it at this office.

Mabbleized Icon Mantle and Grates.—
Persons wishing marbleized iron mantles will

Don’t look for Messrs. S. T. & B. P. Walker’s
store anywhere but at 88 Cherry street, where
you will find plenty of ice, choice groceries, etc.
Truman & Green have a large stock of the
best Self-Sealing Cans and Jars, in Tin, Glass
and Stoneware, and are selling them at very
low prices, at wholesale and retail.
Ip you wan’t anything nice in the eating or
drinking line, go to S. T. & B. P. Walker’s, 88
Cherry street.
It is now believed that, if Cains Cassius could
have had his rations cooked on one of those ex
cellent Charter Oak Cooking Stoves, sold by
Truman & Green, Triangular Block, Julius
Cre3ar would never have spoken of that gentle
man as “Lean and hungry Cassius.” Cassar
was a man of rare discriminating powers. He
had a contempt for, and a suspicion of, lean

Cassius—buy a Charter Oak Stovo, and givo

Mayor’s Court,—This was the largest insti
tution in the city yesterday; no less -than 86v
enteen cases being docketed for hearing. The
court “snatohed" the offenders “fore and aft.”
One fancy Molly, an impertinent and notori
ously infamous negro wench, was fined fifty
dollars and sixty days for cursing the court and
behaving in an outrageons manner. She got
out of just such a serapo once before, under a
writ of habeas corpus, bnt we do not think such
a document will save her this time.
Corbin A Virgin.—This is tho new firm that
has recently bought out Messrs. S. T. A B. P.
Walker, on the corner of Poplar and First
streets, near tho city market. They will con
tinue the family grocery and vegetable business
as heretofore, and will not be undersold by any
house in town. See their card.
Worthily Bestowed.—The Grand Lodge,
L O. O. F., of Georgia, has presented Mr.
George R. Barker, of this city, Past Grand Sec
retary, with a most beautiful and equisitely
wrought gold medal as a token of regard, and
as an acknowledgement of his services to tho
Order.
Don’t forget this fact—that S. T. A B. P.
Walker have sold out their entire interest in tho
store ; near tho city market, and are now to bo
fonnd only at 83 Cherry street, where they keep
everything to eat. Caromel cacoannt and ice

New York, July 17.—It has transpired that
two Orangemen were wounded in tho line of

bearing upon the causes of tho action first taken
by tho city authorities, there is published a let

An Ornament r to Broadway.
Broadway, New York, is famous throughout
the civilized world for its numerous mingled
attractions. It has upon its almost intermin
able length some of the finest buildings in the
world; and to praise an jibing short of grandeur
itself would seem extravagant. But a recent
hotel addition has seemingly placed competition
of that sort out of the question.
Where the new Grand Central Hotel rears its
lofty head and palatial front all surrounding
buildings seem to dwindle into insignificance,
while its massive wings cover and overshadow
an entire block. It can hardly be passed with
out an expression of admiration, and curious
strangers havo flocked in thousands to see it.
In size, splendor and perfection of appoint
ments, it has no rival on the American conti
nent, and we may say, since the destruction of
the Hotel do Ville in Paris, it has no superior
in the old world or in the new.
Few papers ia tha country have neglected to
describo it at length, in terms of praise. Its
huge balls and grand exchanges; its snites of
parlors, furnished in Oriental taste and luxury
its spacious dining halls, tho largest in th
world; its marble stairways; its richly fur
nished apartments, reached by tho largest par
lor-elevator ever made; its carefully served ra
bies and attentive servants, all serve to develop
bnt a portion of its attractions as a model hotel.
Under the able administration of EL Ljrman
Powers, its courteous proprietor, each depart
ment is made to work in perfect harmony and
system. A guest of his never fails to esteem him,
and to feel at home at tho Grand Central. He
has shown rare foresight in fixing his schedule
of low prices—a complete innovation upon the
rates of other hotels. The Grand Central is now
the favorite resort for distinguished Southern
and Western men.
