Washington, July 27.—Fish, Be'knap and
Creswell are here. The President has recog
nized Waldemar Bodiseo, Russian Consul at
New York. •
General Gordon was examined to-day. His
testimony, generally, is corroborative of other
Conservative witnesses. He knows of no Ku-
klux as described in the papers. He had been
invited by the people to join an organization,
the object of which was purely self-protective.
There were no disguises. Under the lead of
bad whites a rising of the negroes was appre
hended, which, without some organization on
tho part of the whites, might be disastrous.
The organization alluded to was not political,
and was never used for political purposes. The
negroes did not essontially sympathize with the
Republican party; they had equal interest with
the whites in good government. Alienation on
the part of the peoplo of the South against the
Government had been increased since the war
by Radical measures, which they regarded as
great wrongs, as well as by military arrests
without warrant or charges, and trial and im
prisonment of innocent men. He did not feel
that ho or any of tho Southern people had com
mitted treason.

Washington, D. C., July 27, 7:40p. m.
The barometer still remains highest on the
south Atlantio coast, diminishing as we proceed
towards the areas of low pressure north of New
York and west of Illinois. An area of high
pressure is advancing over Lake Superior north
eastward. The temperature has risen along
the Atlantio coast and tho Ohio valley. It has
fallen on Lakes Ontario. Michigan and Superior.
Southwesterly winds prevail from Tennessee to
New England, veering to south and southeast
along the Atlantic coast. Fresh and brisk
northerly winds are reported from Lake Mich
igan northward and westward. Light rain has
fallen since Wednesday' at most stations from
New England to Missouri and southward to the
Gulf. Local storms^are now threatening from
Virginia to Missouri. Clear weather prevails
on the upper lakes.
Probabilities: It is probable that a storm of
some severity is advancing eastward towards
Illinios, with brisk winds on] southern Lake
Michigan. Rising baromoter, with westerly
winds, will probably continue on Lakes Superior
and Huron. Southwesterly winds, with partial
ly cloudy and warm weather will probably pre
vail on the Gulf coast on Friday.
