The Mabket-vai.ce of a Good Appetite- Itis
said that in some parts of the world where large
numbers of men are employed, temporarily, in
contract jobs, such as the construction of canals,
railroads and the like, when it is deemed necessary
to reduce the staff, the overseers go among the
men when eating, and single out for discharge all
such as fail to approve themselves valiant trencher-
knights ; judging that the intrepid wielder of his
kmfe-and-fork will be the last man to bring dis
honor npon his hitherto untarnished pick-axe; and
that ho who shovels-in the heaviest cargo of boef
and potatoes, will, in all likelihood, ehovel-ont,
with a corresponding vigor, the stubbomest sub
soil. And, in so judging, they act in strict accord
ance with the teachings of physiological science.
That is to say, supposing a man to eat in obedience
to a healthy, natural appetite, and with powers of
digestion to correspond. For those who are lauda
bly ambitious of getting up a vigorous sppetite
and digestion, and, as a consequence, vigorous
health generally, nothing is better than Dr. Gottlieb
Fisch Bitters. anglS-eodAwlw.

Medical Mistakes.—It took the faculty about a
thousand years to discover that the beet way to core
disease was not to render the patient too weak to
contend with it. Within the last twenty years, how-
ever, the whole system of medical practice liasbeen
changed for the better. In diseases or complaints
caused by excessive heat, for instance, the doctors
no longer recommend the redaction of the invalid's
strength by prostrating medicines. The vast suc
cess which has attended the uso of Hostetter's
Stomach Bitters as a remedy for debility, has given
even the most prej udiced members of the old school
an insight into the only true and rational theory of
cure. Cantharides, calomel, and overpowering
doses of opium, are now among the obsolete nos
trums of anothor age. The lancet, once as much
the legitimate weapon of the physician as the Bword
is of the soldier, is seldom drawn from its case.
The principle of lifo is no longer drained from the
veins by the quart, and water-gruel for the strength-
i less invalid has ceasod to be considered an appro-
| priate diet. Vigor is tbo motto of the rational mem
bers of the profession, and they understand, at
[ last, the value of a sterling vegetable tonic. So,
also, with the people at large; and without consult
ing medical men at all, thoy have adopted the bit-
tere as a household remedy, thereby economising
both cash and health.
Koto the fact, that Hoetotter’sStomach Bitters is
sold in bottles only, never in bulk, and that the
abortions springing up in various parts of the coun-
[ try, and sometimes offered as substitutes for the
great national specific, are all utterly worthless.
Pebtixkjit.—The intelligent reader, be he
artist or artisan, will find a very pertinent ques
tion or two in the following, and just like our
great photographist and jolly friend, Riddle, it
has a refreshing smack of sauce about it. No
one can say that he is not right:
Editors Telegraph and Messenger: Gentle
men.—There is one question that I wish to pro
pound to the committee on premiums at onr
coming State Fair. They offer, nnder the head
of fine arts, a premium of twenty-five dollars (in
plate) for the beBt photograph of the Fair
Ground, to become the property of the Society,
Ac. I have been following the discovery of
Daguerre for twenty-five years, but I must say
that I cannot see how such a picture can be
taken. Therefore, will the gentlemen corn-
poring that committee please tell, for the bene
fit of the photographic fraternity of this State,
how 8nch a pioture can be made. I think,
Messrs. Editors, that it would require a camera
obscura about the size of our new temple of
justice on theeomer of Mulberry and Second
streets, elevated on a scaffold about five hund
red feet bigb, and situated on the apex of that
large Indian mound in East Macon, being at an
angle of forty-five degrees on the Fair Grounds,
to do justice to the subject; for I tell you,
sirs, the Central City Fair Ground is a big
thing, at least a medium-sized man who signs
his name (except on onr circulating medium)
W. A. Huff, is going to make it so. Now, had
those in authority offered a premium, if but one
dollar, for the best collection of plain photo
graphs, for the best collection of colored—in
water or oil—the same for Porcelain pictures,
views, &o., there would have been a chance to
put on exhibition many of our beautiful ladies,
gentlemen and palatial residences, many of
which adorn our city—for what would add more
to the interest and beauty of the occasion than
a fine collection of photographic portraits and
views. Very respectfully,
A. J- Kiddle.

Pianos.—Bless the man who invented pianos,
say we. There is nothing that imparts more
comfort to a household than a good piano—ex
cept it be a handsome daughter. , Or if the
daughter should unfortunately be not particu
larly attractive in personal appearance, let her
have a piano by all means. It lends “a charm
that holds when all others fail,” and has ever
been known to make maidens marimonially
marketable, after their mamas had set them in
the baokgronnd in despair. Reader, if you are
the head of a family, and haven’t got a first-

Runaways.—As Dr. Me ttauer was driving down
Cherry street on Sunday last, in a buggy with
his servant, the shafts became detached from the
the axle and dropped down on the horse’s legs.
It frightened him very much and he commenced
kicking furiously, and, after knocking a few
spokes ont of the front wheels, he determined
to runaway, and off he dashed, the shafts swing
ing around and flying about his legs skinning
and bruising them at every jump. He ran fall

On vesterday afternoon one of the city mules
kicked ont of a cart on Fourth street and ran
away. Alderman Clay seeing his muleships’
performance ran out into the Btreet and headed
off the “creetur,” and tie had a nice time in an
effort to hold it, but he succeeded. He seized
it by the ears and nose, and it lifted him clear
of the ground and swung him around like a top.
The Alderman stuck, however, like a bull ter
rier, and in a little while led the mule off as
docile as a young dove. The affair afforded some
fine fun for the crowd about the Brown House.
tinue, repeat the dose every ten or fifteen minutes
until the patient is relieved. In extreme cases,
two or more teaspoonfuls may be given at a dose.
The Pain Hiller, as an internal remedy, has no
equal. In cases of cholera, summer oomplaints,
dyspepsia, dysentery, asthma, it curoa in one night
by taking it internally, and bathing with it freely.
Its action is like magic, when externally applied to
old sores, bums, scalds, and sprains. For sick
headache and toothace, don’t fail to try it. In
abort, it is a Pain Khleb.
Directions accompany each bottle.
The Pain Killer ia sold by all dealers in medi

Washington, D. O., August 21, 7:40 p. m. j
The barometer has not changed materially
sines Sunday afternoon fromlowa and Missouri
westward to tho Pacific. The area of low bar
ometer on the Lower Lakes has moved some
what to the southeast, but the pressure has
risen very rapidly north and eaBt of Ohio. The
barometer remains low on the South Atlantic
coast. Fresh winds from the north and east
have very generally prevailed in the Sonthern
and Gulf States, with hazy weather. Light
rain is now reported from the Carolina ooast.
Increasing easterly winds continue from Cape
Hatteras to Cape Cod, with cloudy and threat
ening weather from the New England coast to
the Lower Lakes. Clear weather with smoke
and haze are reported from Michigan to Ten
nessee, and westward to the Mississippi.
Probabilities : Easterly winds will probably
continue in the middle and Eastern 'States, and
it is probable' that a storm of some severity -will
continue at a considerable distance off the
South Atlantic coast, with easterly winds and
threatening weather from Georgia to New Jer
sey. Cloudy weather will probably continue in
the New England States. Northerly winds and
warm hazy weather from Michigan to Alabama
and westward.
