Tbe Three Fishers. BY CHAM.ES KU50SLET. Three fishers went sailing down to the west. Away to the west as the eon went down; Each thought of the woman who loved him the best And the children stood watching them out of the town. For men must work and women must weep, And hero’s littlo to oarn, and many to keep, Though the harbor bar be moaning. Three wives sat up In the light house tower. And trimmed tho lamps as the sun went down; And they looked at tho squall and they looked at the shower. While the night rack came rolling up ragged and brown; But men must work and women must weep, Though storms be sudden and water deep, And the harbor bar he moaning. Three corpses lie out on tho shining sands. In the moaning gleam as the tide went down, And the women are weeping and wringing their Ingrid For those who will never come homo to the town; But men must work and women must weep, And the sooner it’s over the sooner to sleep, And the good-bye to the bar and its moaning. The itosd Steamer Again. Georgia State Agriculturai. Society,) Secretary’* Office, Macon, Aug. 22. ) Editor» Telegraph and Messenger: In the haste of preparation and the consequent illegi bility of the note* I sent you on the Hoad Steamer, I caused the printer to commit some errors in one of tho most important paragraphs, which destroy the senso. I wonld have called attention to it at the timo bnt for the necessity of leaving tho city for tho Home Oonvontion, then pressing. Upon any othor matter, per haps, I wonld not urge tho correction, but tho subject of tho road steamer is one I deem of such importance that public attention, with or without r. protoxt, cannot well be too often called to it. Tho correction is as follows: “The directors of the Central Railroad, with a desire to givo a fair test of tho practical work ing of this machine, directed their President to hnvo this ono made at a cost of $5,000, besides the expenso of shipping, and to place it where it now is, (Dole Wadley Mills, Emaunel connty,) and can bo seen readily, and whoro it is sub jected to tho actual practical tost of the heaviest work. Mr. Wadley informed mo that tho machine was thns introduced and tested, that the people of Georgia might examino and see for them selves, whether they may not, by companies, take hold of it and save mnch of the immense outlay now incurred for liorso-power and horse feed by using it for plowing; and whether thoy might not mako it bear burdens and answer tho purpose of the throe feet gauge railroad, and arrest tho waste of money in building tho wide gauge, and thus diminish tho debt and taxation lhat are to result from tho building of roads that will not pay in a half conlnry, if over. I am confident no one can witnoss tho por- formanco of tho steamer, without tho convic tion that it dates an era in transportation and plantation economy—especially in tho depart ment of plowing. Tho machines at present in use may not accomplish all the inventors claim or wish. Thoy may bo but tho rude beginning, in comparison of wbat steam power was when it made ite first appearance on water. They havo demonstrated that .steam on the dirt road oan bo utilized. Tho extent to which it can bo ntilizod is only a question of timo—of improved invention—of progress. Already, in loss than Hix months, since tho judgment of Mr. Wadley pronounced that tho Thompson steamer wonld do all the inventor claimed, this steamer has been beaten in a fair field by Avoling & Porter, of London. Tho improvements thus rapidly mak ing in what has been prononneed a success more than a year ago, prove that there aro no longer grounds of doubt that tho invention makes a period in all social, commercial and material progress—no longer gronnd to donbt the wisdom of the public spirit which brought this machine into Georgia for tho inspection of plantors—tho main fact, indeed, to which it is my object in this note to call public attention. Very respectfully, Dav. W. Lewis, Secretary. The Empress Eugenio is abont to make a visit to Spain to see her mother. Napoleon is pur chasing property near Geneva, in Switzerland, with n view of residing there. THE GREAT REMEDY RHEUMATISM! A GEBTAIN CUBE for Rheumatism.
