That badge ? No shame:
Glad that I wore it!”

“Ho at the front ?
That is my lover;

Judoixc. Soil by Timbee.—Almost any one
knows that the quality or soil may in a great
moasore be determined by tho timber which
grows upon it, bat of tho exact nature indicated
by the primitive trees, people aro not so well
posted. Mr. B. Smith, of Pstmos, Ohio, writes
to the New York Farmer’s Club of this matter,
and says that whito oak land is poor; that red
oak and soft maplo also indicates poor land;
that aboll-bark mostly grows in cold, wet land;
that flat beach and sugar lands aro good for
nnmmer crops and grass, but not for wheat;
that rolling beach and sugar lands whore largo
poplar and black walnnt abound aro fine grazing
lands, and prodneo, when now, largo crops of
all kinds of grain except wheat, whore it is
winter-killed; that largo whito oaks and chest
nut growing together, and black oak and hick
ory indicate a loose subsoil; and that lands
where the water sinks into tho subsoil aro much
the most valuable for grain; that a soil that will
raise Urge crops of all kinds of grain, and then
olovor and timothy, and after they rnn out will
como in with greon grass and whito clovor, is
tho best Country Gentleman.
Mr. H. D. Cbaio, late general agent of the
New York Associated Press, is said to have per
fected bis new system of telegraphy, to the de
velopment of which he has been devoting his
time atid means for three years past, with re-
snlts that can hardly fail to effect an entire rev
olution in telegraphy, by reducing its cost to a
rate very little above the cost of postage. It is
claimed that by this new automatio system it is
perfectly practicable to transmit, with absolnte
accuracy, over a single wire, more than sixty
thousand words an hoar—a speed more than
sixty times greater than by any of the systems
now in nse. Telegrams which, under tho Morse
system now coBt several dollars will, it is said,
bo redneed to a comparatively few cents, which
if trne, will make its valno almost inostimable
to the press, the mercantile community, and
tbe pnblio At large.

CHEAP GASLIGHT
Tie" Collate Gas Works.”
I S a simple, safe and reliable apparatus for sup
plying PUBLIC BUILDINGS and PRIVATE
RESIDENCES, with a superior and CHEAP GAS
LIGHT.
Upwards of FOUR HUNDRED are in successful
operation in private residences, churches, factories,
eto.
No other apparatus is operated oa tho same or
any similar principle, which guarantees a light of
uniform quality, in either argand or open Burners,
WITHOUT THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL HEAT.
The practical operation of tho Machines can he
seen at the PASSENGER SHED of the Railroad
Companies in MACON; also at the Printing and
Publishing House of Messrs. J. W. BURKE & CO.
Wo call attention to tho following extract from a
letter from J. W. Burko, Esq.:
Macok, Ga., March 23,1871.
“We have had one of the U. S. Gaslight Compa
ny’s Machines, in operation’ since the 10th of No
vember, 1870, and it is perfectly satisfactory to ns
in its general working and cheapness. We paid the
Macon Gaslight Company for four months of last
year and the year previous—viz: November, De
cember, J anuary and February—$390.5G. In using
this Machine our gas for tho four corresponding
months cost us $114—thus saving us in that time
$285.50. The light is quite as good as that of tho
City GaB Company, and has tho advantage of being
entirely under our control to nso as wo please.
During tho severe weathor in December it burned
without intermission, not being at all affected by
the freeze. We see no troublo in tha Machine or
the light, and cheerfully recommond it.”
