The only surprise is that there has not boon a greater extent of sickness. The fever thus far, in our judgment, hue been the offspring of local causes, end ephemeral in its character. We know that thie is at wide va riance with i-xaggcrsti-d reports, which have swept llko wild fire throughout the country, llut onr object la to ascertain the trntb, and state tho facta. Local causes will always pro duce local aickncaa. Open a foul drain any where, whether in New York, Huston or any other section of the oonntiy, and expose Its contents to tho anmmcr'a son, or use these as a cement for tho covering of a Btrcet, and fever will be thn result. This is tho diroct and necessary effect of an ascertained cause. The few eases of fever which havo since the '.’7th of July, occurred in Charles- ton, are all directly traceable to this cause. There never has been any sound mason for either panic or excitement For tho week end ing 2<tih of Angm-t there were, in our large population, bat scren deaths from fever of all kinds. This is the fact aa shewn by the weekly bills of mortality. And this may be implicitly relied upon. It may be said this h not consist ent with the reports prevalent In Wilmington, Savannah, Augusta, and elsewhere. Neverthe less, it ia so. And this only tends to Illustrate * the niter falsity of the reports in reference to the health of this city, and how madness has ruled where mason should have bad the sway. Thia shows seven deaths less Ibis year than the corresponding week of INTO. In the light of this statement, aa to which thorn can be no denial, bow ridiculous, and more than thia, how nnjust, appears the false rumor, excitement and panic, upon which Wil mington, Augusta and Savannah have wrought themselves into a condition of unnecessary frenzy. Oar Savannah exchanges, who have boon foremost in this unnecessary and uncalled for panin, seem restive under auy comparison of tho health of Gharlceton and Savannah. Wo need only refer them to the Savannah Itepnbli- oan, of the 30lb ultimo, which aaya: “We crave the indulgence of onr readers. From sickness and other causes we have been deprived of nearly half onr usual complement of compositors for several dtys past, and aa a necessary consequence, we have been compelled to buns the Uepublican without its accustomed amount of news. We bopo to be all right in tho oouroo of a day or two." Thoru aro a few cases of fever hem, which am attributable entirely to loeal causes. And when we assert this, wo state the whole truth. To thia extent it has thna fsr gone nod no more—it it were otherwise we would aa freely give it utterance. Onr citizens have inangu- raacd measures to take the health of their eity in their own hand. These already have been productive of lienefit, and with Ibe removal of thn loeal oanaoa, we have every eonfldenoe that all apprehonaiona will be allayed. But even with the cases of fever which 'havo thna far occurred, tbs health of the city com pares favorably, as to the mortality, with tbo previous years. Aa to thia there Is no room for doabt. It is a matter of statistics. 1870 was a healthy season in Charleston. The mor tuary report for the week ending Angust 20, 1870, as furnished by the city Kcgistrar, Dr. Kobert Lerby, Sr., shews: Deaths—Whites 13 Blacks and colored 21 Total...
