Czxraios Lmnurua* or 1872.—The Wash ington JlopubUean of last Saturday givea ua the * lint specimen in a 9x9 picture representing the Ku-klux about to execote John Campbell, of Moore eounty. North Carolina, on the mgbt of Anguat 10, 1871. Campbell is a good looking yonth kneeUng In a semicircle of the Kudrinx, with a rope round Us neck and bat in hand, begging for mercy. The Ka-klux are g off at bim through hideous masks sod high conical caps embellished with horns and cremes. Un derneath is a foil double leaded description of the outrage os chronicled in the veracious le- gends of the Ko-klus Committee. Of such will be the campaign literature of 1872. The o Jackson duelling pictures and coffin handbills of 1832 will be nowhere beside the Ku-klnx car- toons of forty years laler. Kilmso Cotton Wobms.—F. U. G. Taylor, of Galveston Bay, writes the New Orleans Times that be treats the ootlon caterpillar to a eolation of anonio at tbs rale of two pounds of araenio to three pork barrels of waler, frequent ly alined, and the soloUon applied with a com- mon watering pot. Tbreo barrel* will water an acre, and it kills the worm at once. Caro most bo uken not to bavo tbs solution too strong, m it will kill the cotton. Tbo person applying the anonio should bo protoetod by a thick apron. The dreg coat* him ten cents a pound. Tux Euction in Foasrin—A I’i.cmtib fob Simmons.—Onr agent at Forsyth, Mr. Sneed, writes ns a note at 11 o'clock yesterday morn ing Ibst 2111 volos bad been polled at that time in Forsjlb and all for 8iniraons. It is evident Simmon* is all right—no Lifer Begulator needed. Tu* Tidal Wavs.—Professor Caleb O. For- abey calms tho troubled souls in New Orloana by a loiter written on tbo !>lh and published in the papers of Bnnday, in wUcbbesoonta at that tidal wave, and aaya Uiat nobody is able to fore- caat from aatroncuileal data, any such extraor dinary performance. Under this assuranoo lot m sleep as usual. Banana Troxat.—'Tho new gubernatorial ticket in Massaeboselta of Ben. Batler for Govornor, and Anns Dickenson for Liouteoant Governor, is ridiculed as ihe Ben-Anna tioket, and tbo ltodleals my thoy will skin it. “What tbs South Wants.’’V—Under ibis Load we aee that Ihe Tribuno gives us a good doal of information abont what the South needs. Thia information may bo valuable, but is certainly rather truth Wo once knew of a successful eombinstion by some of the heira to a vast estate to choat and plnndcr tho balance out of tholsst dollar of their intereat In IT; trat, then, after itwaa done, they never told the unhappy minority abont tbelr mints. They knew they wantod everything and had nothing. They knew bow it happened, and therefore considerately waived any inquiries and re minders. Tu* Dotzmcnck —Wo see Ibe Macon Sep tember ootton receipts footed up 207 bales on Ibe night of September 13th. Last year the week ending !Hb September fooled op <198 bales. Tux New Book or Common Pxatzx which the telegrams have informed ua has been adopted by some of the Northern and Western Episco pal Churches, at the expense of a rapture their eoeleeiastical relations, is n volume of 890 pages lately published by A. S. Barnes A Co. and bears no announcement of authorship or authority. Tho changes are important and in. dode the omission of eontrorerted and donbt fnl expressions. Texas Election.—The Texas election for members of Congress occurs on the 3d of Oc tober next. The Texas papers report the De- mooraey thoroughly aroused and confident of oarrylng the State. 'Simmons Against Tinlxis.—The fact is. it was too late for Tinley peaches in the 22d Sen atorial District yesterday. They were ont of season. The people called for 'Simmons. Kottenniss seems to have entered into the bones of the New York politicians. A full neat of plnndetere wsa broken up in the New York Pottoffioe yesterday. Goon Waoes.—Tho Patriot of loot Friday, aaya Gen. Grant honored his winter capital with a hasty visit on Thursday and drew a quarter’* ■alary amounting to #ti,250. Daring that time be baa been engaged three days on publio busi- near at #2,083 per day. Lose.—The verb to lost lisa boen, in spite of grammar, a very aotiva verb in these Southern States for ton yean put. Lam, lurn, lose has been on every tongue, in every heart, in every pocket—until every body is ell lorn and every thing “a lost esuse" generally. This being tbe esse, how happens it, that so few, including the printers, know how to spell lose. Nine-tenths of the people will insist on spelling the evil word with oo—com to make the miserable «M" C as long aa possible. Is it because they are so full of losing that they think jastice demands more p's in the word than the lexicographers give it f That must lie the case. But true phil osophy tell* us “never to cry over spilt milk” and the;*'least said soonest mended." Now, if II *** *1“ ™i> to gain nobody wonld blame us for not knowing bow to spell it We have had no use for that word for many years. It might m weU be struck out ot the dictionary. Wo ought to be held excused from knowing anything about it* orthography. But when printers and peoplo who have been losing for ten years write about '‘loosing” as though they were untying a colt or a jackass, it is inexcusable. “ Restored tue Union. "-Sensekeeper Mor. ton, in his late speeches in the Wast, says, “to the Republican party belongs the signal glory of having restored tbe Union.” The Sense- keeper tells only half the story of ex , ploita. There used to be tn honest old Dutch man down in Florida, who once m * w j^j e on a heavy spree and played the wild. In one of them eeoapades he aet fire to his house and burnt it to ihs ground. Be never reputed that trick—but sober or mellow, he wonld over and anon tell tbe story to his visitors somewhat after this fashion“ Tint sees dis haute, myn heer t VtU, den, / burnt down dis Kauoe, and * m ' ■J b < K 1 hBted it again, but not so pet. The question arose in th* case of John a Dominick, indicted in county for murder, who plead the Governor's unconditional pardon, which plea waa refused by tho Judge sitting as a court of habeas corpus. Justices Lochrano and McCay insist that the present Constitution of Georgia extends the pardoning power beyond the limitations imposed by the Constitution of 1798, and makes it aa ample as that under the Constitution of the United States or that of Great Britain. Judge Warner diss. u is and insists «h*t tho offence most be legally ascertained before it can be psrdonod. Tbo opinions in tho esse cover four Columns of the Atlanta Constitution. THE GEORGIA Pit ESS The Bainbridge folks are chewing away for dear life on potatoes at 7.9 cents a bnabel, and sugarcane at 5 cents a stalk. They have been robbing the poor house. Mr. Merida Kendrick, one of the oldest and best citizens of Putnam county, died the 19th Inst. Tbe Press and Messenger tells tbe following story: Old Mr. Vincent, who by ail accounts must have been one of the mont pious of men. onee called on Judge Gone, who was considered dan gerously sick, and commenced talking lo bim abont his eternal interests. “Well, Mr. Vincent,” said the judge, rather native, “these are things that I don't know much abont, and I don't suppose yon know any more abont them than I do.” The old man took bis leave, and afterward! he waa questioned aa to bis success in awaking the judge to serious thoughts: “Ah," was tbe answer, “he ain't sick enough get.” The People's Mntnal Loan Association, ot Savannah, cold $G,000, Tuesday night, st 9.1 (<s> 54 J premium. A wagon load of corn in the shuck offered for sale on the street, is tbe latest sensation at Phil Lamar, commonly known as “Fiddler" Phil, a well known oolored mac of Milledgeville, was drowned in Fishing Creek, near that city, last Sunday. On the subject of turnips, the Bandereville Georgian offers these sensible suggestions: Tbe oorn crop, all admit, baa been materially cut off by various causes. Why not “splioe” it with turnips for fattening pork? Nothing easier; a few acres will do the thing effectually and that tremendous drain upon the corn cnb dispensed with. Milch cows, too, may be kept fat and sleek all winter by tbe same means, and tbe dairy supplied with the richest milk and butter. But little labor, exoept in preparation, to required, and the yield on well manured land, ia enormous. Wo know a farmer wbo raised 1,000 bushels to tho acre, upon poor, piney- wooda land, with tho application of 300 ponnds of Teresian Guano. The tgnlh of tbe matter is, we open Ibe corn house too often. It’s very convenient, bet awfully expensive and unneces sary. Sow turnips and save ail tbo peas and potatoes possible.
