The conse quence is that the community la doctored over much. When nature needs only the gentle stimu lant end * iterative, which has become funoua throughout the country at a reliable medicine, un der the name of Hostetler's Stomach Bitten, ahe ia not nc frequently doted with a dozen prescrip tions, all experimental, from the Pharmioopcei*. This is an evil, and proves that the practice of med icine ia far from being at all times a healing art. At this period of the year, when the fall of the leaf indicates that decay has seized opon the vegetable kingdom, many barracsing diseases are prevalent Chief among these may he mentioned intermittent fever and bilious remittent The exhalation* ris ing from decomposing vegetation, and the heavy dews and foge, are very apt to generate there com plaints. The wisest policy is to protect the system by a coarse of Hoe tetter'* Stomach Bitten at the com mencement of the fell. Much suffering may thereby be avoided. But if the disease has already begun, its periodical visitation! may readily be cheeked and broken up by this retire, yet hannlees, vegetable tonic. Bat be on your guard against the charlatans who are attempting to palm off, under various names, unwholesome compounds, which they pretend to oompare favorably with the great national elixir, which hi* long since swept more formidable oppo sition from the field. Bear in mind that every bot tle of genuine Hoetetter'e Stomach Bitters ia au thenticated by a splendidly engraved label, and a fac timlU of the sign mamul of the firm. BEST QUALITY OF DRILL CARBON, Always on hand.angSO tf The Stbfet Kailwat moves ahead with com mendable energy. At 3 F. M., yesterday, workmen were throwing dill very lively at Boardmon corner, on Mulbeny and Second streets. Uptowners calculate they will be rid ing from College Hill and neighborhood down I heir business at least by 15 th of October. Notwithstanding the dullness of trade, both here and elsewhere, Southern merchants ore hieing to New York City, purchasing as big stocks m ever. Tnis bold and fearless class of evciy commr-'ity seem to have plenty of confidence in the fnlure, r'thongh nobody else can look into to-morrow without seeing it in the shadow of tbo blackness of gloom. Teadz.—Cotton arrives dead rlowly, trade moves off dn’J, time bangs heavily. At this season onr streets onght to look brighter—ought bo we'l fl'led w'.tb people from tho country. But they have no money now, rid have had no chance to piek out any cotton to bring to market But this state of affairs will not last forever. There will be a change for the better before many days, and wo hope it will come soon. We saw a merchant yesterday, just down from East Tennessee, who reported provisions very BCt.no and higher in Brownlow’e country than they are around Bullock’s new barn. Ho says that corn, breon, flour and the like are selling higher in the towns aid straggliog villages along tho railroads than wo are getting for them here. Crops have been greatly curtailed by a drouth which has lasted ever einoo last spring. Still Anothee Rainy Day.—Yesterday was like unto the last twenty proceeding: wind and rain and stoim. For a few fitful moments the suu struggled through the mist, and here and there streaked along tho earth, but quickly fol lowed by a shower. It is truly dishearlening. It looks like Heaven is scourging onr country it never was before. The good books tel'9 n? though to trust in Him though He slay ns. How tux Blood i* Pcjunxti.—Experience, as vail aa science, teaches tbo immense importance to health and to physical oomfort of the excretory processor. By the excretory processes is to be un derstood all those function* having for their end the discharge of waste matter from the system When the faculties of mind and body are sensibly dal] and obstructed, and when tho mere fact of ex- iatcncc ia burdensome, rather than, aa it ongbt to he, a rich bleating, we all know bow exhilarating and reviving an effect ia brought about by inducing a copious flow of perspiration, or by administering a incident purgative. Bat these remedies are, in their natnro, only temporary. As soon aa the ef fect of the cathartic or andoriflo, as the case may be, hat exhausted itself, the system reverts more or less rapidly to its original condition. A remedy to he permanently beneficial must bo radical. We moat aim at raising tho tone and vigor of the sys tem generally, and this ia beet to be aooompliahed by the use of a medicine at once tonic snd stimu lant, such aa Dr. Gottlieb Fisch’a celebrated Bitten. Bat this medicine stimalstee not only tho stomach, but as well the other alimentative organa, chief among which is the liver. Now, the (pedal fono- tion of the liver it the secretion of the bill fluid not only essential to the digestive process, bnt also of the highest utility as the groat nature-ap pointed laxative, the great natural regulator of the intestinal functions. This fact render* tho bitten doubly valuable. News 1’boh Ecaor*.—Dr. L. Bio Scare.—A gentleman of this city who has just returned from a trip over the Musco gee railroad, sayi the people about Geneva, in Talbot coonty, are cherishing a lively rears in regard to the presence in the woods of that neighborhood, of a large, first-class panther. Its eminiotu bowlings and growling* keep the young folks at borne and very still o’ nights. Why don't Gorman, of the Standard, relieve hia people of the monster? We are opposed to having our sidewalks con stantly blocked np with boxes of glass, barrels of oil, sacks of seeds, kegs of paint, and such like, as is the oase before the doors of onr en terprising firm of J. H. Zeilin A Co., but opon complaint they propose joat as soon as able to open and store the vast stock of goods they are receiving, they will keep the track clean; well, as this shows a determination to keep foil np to the times, and we know this firm is composed of the go ahead element, wo grant the time asked. Fall Fashions.—On exhibition now some of the most recherche goods for gents' wear ever brought out Mr. C. H. Baird made the se lections himself in New York and offers to make them op to order in as good style as can be had in the city, and at reasonable prices. Serna: Stock or Clotheso.—M. Hirsh & Bro., clothiers, on the first floor of this office, are now in reoeipt of their new Fell and Winter stock of men’s and boys' clothing, and it is the most superb and stylish that has been received here this season. In this stock one may find any sort of a coat, vest or pants, of any size or qual ity, and made up in the best manner. They have also a fall line of nnder clothing, suitable for aU seasons, while, their stock of neaifs and neck ties surpass anything of the sort, in style and variety, ever opened in Central Geor gia. They are very beautiful and some of them the finest material. As to prices, this firm will not be undersold by anybody in this region. Give them a call and be convinced of all we have stated. TheTbottino Race on Fhiday.—Sportsmen hereabouts are taking much interest in the trot- ting match that will certainly come off at tho Trot ting Park on next Friday afternoon. Four en tries have been made, and as the horses are well matched as to speed, it will be a close and ex citing race. The gate money received on the occasion will go to the city and be appropriated to the improvements going on at the Fair grounds. Wo hope to see a largo crowd in at tendance. Gen. We. M. Browne. —This gentleman, who, for tho past two years, hrs been a citizen of this city, left yesterday for Baltimore, where he will make his homo hereafter. He has made an engagement with the Gazette, of that city, and will have a proprietary rs well »s editorial interest in its future conduct. We learn that he will still continue to have editorial control of the Farm and Home. General B. was an active, rueful citizen, and Macon loses by his departure. We wish him aU good lack in his new home. The Street Railroad.—Yesterday the work ing force crorsed Second street and entered Cotton Avenue. They are putting the road down with an energy truly remarkable, and little doubt need now be entertained that the whole line w.H be finished end in full operation by the opening of onr great State Fair, October 23d, nearly six weeks off. Of conree much dc pends upon the prompt reception of iron and other necenary material. We notice rails, stringers and cross-lies being thrown down along Cotton avenne as far as Fjfe's corner. With bnt one or two intervals, it his rained here every day for the last twonty. The reports from the cotton fields are peifectly awful. This weather will not have to oontinne much longer to make the destruction well nigh complete. It docs not like much of that point now, and in some places nothing at all. We saw fifty bolls from Jones county yesterdsy, gathered at ran dom, all of which were more or leas rotten- some totally worthless, the others of little or no valuation. But few people even dream of the extent of the horror of tho situation of the cot ton crop. Aid the new moon indicates that the rain is to continue worse than ever. Hence, Dooley’. Yeast Towder it the beat, purest, atrongo* cheapest ever offered to the consumer, and everyone who has rued it wiU readily testify to this •aasrtion. For sale In quantities to suit bj all good Pure Heavy Haul or Clothing.—Some one or more thieves entered the kitchen of Mr. John G. Deitz, on Second street, near Oak, on Mon day night, and robbed him and family of whole week's washing of clothes, which had been given out during the day. The clothes were aU wet, but that proved to be no hairier to the operation of the rogues, as the clothes were taken into the back yard, wrung out and then carried off. No clue to the thief or clothing has yet been discovered, bnt it is hoped parties living in the neighborhood will be on the alert. The theft is an exceedingly annoying one, and onr friend Deilz says they left him emphatically with “nothing to wear.” Tinware at wholesale and retail at Truman 4 Green’s, Triangular Block. SrorawooD Hotel.—This largo and elegantly furnished hotel is now being pnt in order from oeUar to third story, for the accommodation of visitors during the great State Fair in October, and we are sure its enterprising, polite and hos pitable proprietor, Mr. Tom. Harris, will spare no expense or trouble in making e'l who stop with him, both comfortable and oontented. His table ia never wanting in anyth'ng good to eat which this or the Savannah market affords, while his rooms are neatly and comfortably fur nished and hia seivants polite and attentive.
