CITY AFFAIRS
SATURDAY MORNING. SEPT. 23. 1871.
Dana or a Livdlqkd.—Mr. Brooks, propri
etor of the Brooka’ Hotel, died on Thursday
morning laat at an advanced age. Ho was well-
known and much respected all through South
western Georgia, and his hospitality to
and neighbors was proverbial in his section.
Tns attention of onr readers is directed
the card of Mr. A. 8. Hartridge, cotton factor
and eommiasion merchant, Savannah, Ga This
firm is one of the oldest and moet reliable in
the South, and planters will find it to their ad
vantage to make consignments to him.

had in this section during the present month.
The hope is now most earnestly entertained
that we ahall have pleasant weather for a while,

pushed forward to completion right away, and
that the planters may be able to pick out and

Balloon Asce-'sio.v.—Mr. Warn bold, the dar

from this city yesterday, but came down rather
snmmarily upon the residence of Ur. Ino. G.
Deitz, on Second street, knocking off tbe top
of the chimney, tearing down tba lightning
rods, and then smashing several pannela of
fence. All damages will be promptly paid by
tbe proprietors of the show. Tbe balloon
aeoended about 300 yards, and passed directly
over tbe heart of the city.
Tub Cacao.—The immense pavillion of'Woo
ten & Haight’s circus was filled yesterday after
noon, and literally packed last night by all
classes of onr people. Taken altogether, It is
a first-clam establishment of its kind, and tbe
performances gave universal satisfaction. Tbe
bones are in good condition and tba parapher-
nalia is beantifoL Some features of tbe the per-
formanoea are extra fine, and one or two quite
brilliant, particnlarly those of tbe tnpeze and
horizontal bar. Some of the riding is also ex
cellent. The trained dogs are wonderful and
highly amusing. Jn fact, it is really a good
show, and will interest and amuse all who pat
ronize it In the side show are sevenl animals

Tire Tbottiso Match Yebtxbdit.—There
was a moderately good sized crowd in attend
ance yesterday at tbe Trotting Park to witness
the rnoe between four of onr three minute nags,
and we were pleased to notioe tbst a number of
ladies graced tbe occasion with their presence.
Before the horses were brought ont there
considerable interest manifested in the race,
and it was conceded that between at least two
of the nags it would be very close. In the sel
ling of pools jnst before tbe race, Ur. James
Ralston’s black mare, Lucy, was (he favorite,
“Ballet” next, owned by Mr. John Founds—the
odds against Mr. George Napier’s bay, “Bob,”
and CapL Tom Archer's sorrel, “Tom Reese,'
being abont ten to one.
Abont 4 p. u. the horses were brought ont
and after tbe drivers were weighed and the
track cleared, tbe nags were called np for a
start—Lnoy having the pole. Ballet 2nd, Tom
Reese 3rd, snd Bob 4th. The first and second
trials were a failure, bnt on tbe third they came
np nnder tho string well together, and they
wore sent off at tho word “go.” Before reach
ing the first quarter pole “Bob" and “Ballet”
broke np badly, particnlarly tbe former, Lncy
leading and “Tom Boose" close in her rear, bnt
before Tom got to the half pole he lost his
heels and oonld not again recover them nntil it
was clear that he wonld be distanced. Ballet
passed him and soon Upped the mare, and on
the Uat qnarter they canto along at a slashing
gait and neck and nock. They passed nnder
the string so nearly together that many thought
it was a dead beat, bat tbo judges gave it to
Lncy by a beat. Tom Reese and Bob distanced
badly. Time 3 miuntes.
Second Heat.—It was now clear that tho race
was going to be an exceedingly dose one be
tween Lncy and Bullet,'nd tho bookers of both
were silent and tbonghtfnl nnder tbe fan that
was being poked at them, particnlarly the back-
era of Lnoy who had been betting at odds on
her. The nags were called np and on the first
effort started off well, Ballet soon taking the
lead, bnt on the seoond quarter he broke and
the mare passed him a length, which she held
nntil the turn into the home stretch, when she
broke np, and Ballet again took tbe lead and
held it home, passing under tho lino two lengths
ahead in 3:04, amid tbe shouts of the crowd.
Third Beat.—It was now doubtful which of
the two contestants wonld win, and tho backers
of both were very quiet At the word a good
■tart was obUined. Bnllet soon took tho lead
bnt after passing the half mile pole he lost hU
heels and the mare passed him, holding her
position home, and winning the beat amid loud
cheering, by two lengths, and again in precisely
three minute*
fourth Beal.—The backers of Lucy now be
gan to look confident and tho color on their
cheeks much more roseate, while those who had
their money on the little Ballet, began to look
bine and sour. Tho nags, at tho expiration of
the usual time allowed for a rest were called
np, and, after one or two false starts, they got
off together, Ballet soon taking the lead, which
he held to tbe third quarter by a length, when
he broke, and Lncy passed him by a half length.
Bnllet quickly got down to his work, and on the
home stretch it was the prettiest and tightest
match we oversaw. They again came to the
string so nearly together that the deoiaion of
the judges was required by the crowd to know
whioh horse was ahead. Tbe best and race
wore given to Lucy by another head. Time 2:56.
